Ive never really been a big fan of Nintendo, but I liked some of there games.  Im not ready to spend money on a next-gen system quite yet.  So should i buy a gamecube?  RE4 looks good and so does MGS ts, and all of the mario games.  Also does the Gamecube have any kind of online?

I think you should. They are pretty cheap and have nice exclusives as well as some great 3rd party games. I have not went next-gen yet due to the high prices and I still play my GC on a daily basis. So what kind of games are you into so I can refer you to some great games and what ones to avoid.

Welcome to the forums! Yeah, you should get one, but if you plan on upgrading to a Wii within a year's time, just buy the Wii.

I'm not sure if you know this, but the Wii plays ALL gamecube games. Just so you know.

the gamecube doesn't have any online games. But its still a good deal to get, only about $50, and plus games are pretty cheap now. also if you get a gameboy player you can play gba games on your gamecube which is a bonus.

If you can get the games for cheap, then go for it... the problem is that the game supply will slowly dry up, as new games stop coming out and old games are no longer available. So if it's your intention to buy the GC and a bunch of games now, then go for it. If not, buy a Wii and pick up some of the GC classics like RE4, MGS:TTS, MP, and SSBM.

I would say to wait and save your money for a wii.  First of all, it plays all gamecube games.  It also does have some online capabilities.  Besides, I am fairly sure that due to the wii's immense sucess, the gamecube will probably be phased out soon and all new games will be on wii.  Hence, you would just be wasting money which you could use on something else.

No, it was a mistake for me to get a gamecube, you should save up for a wii instead, and you can still play gc games on it too, if you are too impaient, do what I do and play some of those old games that you might have liked before.

Throw down the extra cash and get a Wii. Whatever you pay for a Gamecube could just have gone to a Wii. It does everything the GC does and ton more.

If he wanted a Wii, he would have gone to the Wii boards. What if he only wants to play GC games and does not want a Wii. Whats the point in throwing down $250 if he just wants a few handful GC games? What if he is saving up for a 360 or PS3 and would like to play GC games, I say get the cheaper GC and save up for something like a 360 or a PS3 because the Wii's graphics dont cut it and it has no games that appeal to my favor.

As for me I am staying with the GC until the end of this year and I am saving up for a 360. So while I am at it, I can enjoy all of the GC cames that I like without plopping down $250 for another GC.

Like this guy said, he is not a big fan of Nintendo so it is utterly pointless for him to shell out so much cash just to play some GC games, he is probably saving up for a real next gen system.

Gamecubes are actually kind of dead.... Get one if you like, just don't expect any great Nintendo games to come from it soon. Possibly later on.... I would say a Wii is much better. But I'm Wiiless, and all I got is my Gamecube :D

No, just go strait for the wii, that way you can play, SN, N64, Gamecube, and wii games, plus it is at a reasonable price.

GameCube's better games are holding up quite well, although the fact that the Wii's graphics are not strong probably helps with that. The price of the system and it's peripherals are all quite attractive right now, in fact they won't get any better, from a price/availability standpoint. Yes, strike while the iron's hot, my friend. Nintendo did release a wireless Internet attachment, but didn't advertise it very hard, as it wasn't viable as an online function when compared to PS2 and XBox. You can get one new from Wal-Mart for like $30, but I seriously doubt you're gonna get your money's worth out of it. You'd probably be better off just having your friends over for hours of TimeSplitters 2, F-Zero, Metroid Prime, RE4.. all the greats. But if you're determined to get some online out of your 'Cube, then yes, it can be done.

My NGC died last year (God rest it's soul) but I bought a Wii and I must admit I've WAY more GC titles than I do Wii titles at the moment, classics like RE Collection, F-Zero GX, Mario Golf, SSBM, MP1 & 2 and so on. But depending on how long you intend to wait before buying a Wii (if you are?) Then for all the price of it buy a GC it has if not the bst titles of last-gen in my honest opinion.

Oddly, I just got a Gamecube for my birthday.  My friend is getting a Wii and I had recently mentioned borrowing his GC to try a game from Gamefly so he decided to give me his.  I've been floating around the forum just now to get a feel of what is good that hasn't come out for PS2, even if they have changes or extras  (Ex: Playing Link in SC2 isn't motivation enough to get SC2 again.) before I head over to the reviews list.

I think you should just go with the Wii, that way you can play all the Gamecube games that you missed out on and if any Wii games come out that take your fancy you can buy them too.

no online for gamecube, but i would not get one, get a wii, then buy the game cube games, they play on the wii still, and you get a next gen system, next gen games, and still play all the other games on the cube. the wii has online, so you can play all the old school NES, SNES, and N64 games we all grew up playing, or at least i did, i still have my SNES, ive never owned a non nintend system until PSP

Get a GameCube. They're much cheaper and they support the Game Boy Player, unlike the Wii. In addition, there are tons of great GC games already available while the Wii has only a few good games right now.

Wow thats some good advice. Tell the guy to cough up $250 just to play GC games when he could pay $60-$99. What if he does not want to play Wii games? If this dude is serious about the Wii the should go ahead and get it but from my perspective he does seems not to want to pay too much money just to play GC games and never buy a Wii game.

If as you've already said that you are not interested in buying a next gen console just yet, then I would look into buying a cheap second hand Gamecube and then buy some games for it. I've seen prices for about £25/$50 upwards.

When you decide later on to get maybe a Wii then you can use all those Gamecube games that you've already got on your new console.

Ever heard of Phantasy Star Online I, II or III? Not many have heard of 'Homeland' but that too was an online game for the Gamecube (Japan only however).

Also 'Warp pipe' allowed a few other titles to be played online.

Nah, get a GameCube. I still recommend it. It's much cheaper, it supports the Game Boy Player, and it has plenty of great games. So what if the Wii is backwards compatible with GC games? The Wii has very few of it's own games that are actually good.

If you want to game on the cheap, then yes a Gamecube would be perfect. There are tons of sub $20 games available and getting used hardware is super cheap. It's strength was definitely in it's exclusives. There are a few multiplatform games that are great too, but the exclusives are where most of the excellence is at.

If I didn't already own a GameCube I wouldn't buy one, since I have a Wii. Don't get me wrong, the GameCube is a great system but the games and accessories for it are becoming next to nothing at most of the stores around me, unless you want to buy all used games. It is harder and harder to come by a new controller in the stores. Most of the store personnel I talked to said that most stores are already starting to phase out the GC stuff in favor of Wii and other Next Gen systems.
Now if your question was about the PS2, I would say go for it, as the PS2 still gets top support, of course that will change come this time next year. That said, I would go for a Wii and of course a DS, if you don't have one already. Best time to get a Wii, from the Toys R Us guy I talked to, is Sunday/Monday.
Cheers,

I just bought a Gamecube yesterday and it does seem to me to really be worth the money. A sale at my local Toy's R Us was what made me cave in. The sale was that for $100 you'd get the system, a game worth $19.99, and a memory card. To me it seemed like a rather good deal considering that the games that I really wanted to play on the Wii (if I got that) were Twilight Princess and Super Paper Mario, both of which are ports from Gamecube games that are pretty much just spruced up.
My situation was that I really did want to buy a Wii (I still somewhat do), but I really did not want to go through the hassel of finding a Wii with how they are still rather hard to find in stores. I've read much about the the game drout that the Wii seems to currently be suffering and well I also thought about how I would like to play Gamecube games on that system if I seemed to experience that myself.
If I bought everything seperately that would have been $10 for the memory card, $20 for Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door, and $25 for a controller. All of that adds up to $55. For just about $50 more I got a great deal because in the future I can use these things on a Wii if I ever buy one, but in the meantime I can play on this great system and know my money isn't going to waste. I've spent about 3-4 hours playing Paper Mario since yesterday and I really don't regret my decision.

In short:

-I believe the Gamecube is a good deal
-There are some really great games that don't cost much
-It has fun games (which is what really matters)

if money is the issue, then yes. besides cheaper places like pawnshops, classifieds, street dealers, etc, you can get a refurbished system from Gamestop for 60 bucks, and most games are 10 bucks or lower nowadays in the stores.

A lot of people talk about what might be in gaming much like those suggesting you get a wii. I own a wii(mainly because i'm a confessed nintendo junkie) but to be honest buying a gamecube now is a wise move if you ask me, you have many first and third party titles all at rock bottom prices and you will get a cube off ebay for peanuts, so where's the negative? there isn't one, that is unless you can't stand not having the latest(not always the greatest) I can back this theory by admitting i play more cube games on my wii than wii/vc stuff. Why not play metroid prime 1 & 2, wind waker, eternal darkness, resident evil 4, timesplitters 2 & 3, mario sunshine, double dash, f zero gx, beyond good and evil, ssx 3, need for speed: most wanted, tomb raider: legend, metal arms then come back here and tell the forum what you thought of it?!?!? :-)

Guess it depends on dollars you want to spend.  It's easy to say just get a Wii.....but I personally just bought a Gamecube myself.  Got a Gamecube, RE4, Rogue Squadron, Mario Sunshine, NBA Live 06 for about $60.  All that for about the cost of just 1 new game on the "next-gen" systems.

I'm not a hard-core gamer.  Just wanted something to play with my 6 year old and get a little enjoyment out of without having to break the bank.  I think I'm gonna get alot of mileage of out the $60 I just spent.  Granted, it's not the next best thing....but these games will hold me over for awhile.  And there are probably quite a few other games I'll be able to get for dirt cheap.  Heck, we've been playing my old 8 bit NES so the Gamecube will probably feel like a next-gen system to me.

I spent alot of time debating before buying and feel like I made a good choice.  Isn't like it's a huge risk spending only $60 for a pretty good bundle.  $600 or $800 would be a different story though.

There's no online play on the GameCube, but for the $100 price tag, you can't beat some of the games you can play on this great system.  Resident Evil, MGS, Zelda, Viewtiful Joe, SSBM, Metroid, Eternal Darkness, and the list goes on...
