Thought?

IMO a lot of people in the comments (of both the blog and the youtube video) are pretty harsh. At least he wasn't being an ass about it. He just said he didn't like the game, he thought it was too hard, and that he preferred Halo and Call of duty.

I'm not sure about Halo, but he definetly shouldn't be playing Call of Duty at that age.

I find this sort of funny, considering I was exposed to Contra at about the same age and I freakin' loved it (I'm 16 now, for the record).

Then again, I spent the first six years of my life with an SNES and parents who let me rent games from Blockbuster quite often, so maybe I'm just one of those old persons who annoys the youngins' with tales of how games were back in the day...

At the same time, though, I exposed my 10 year old sister to Mega Man 2 a few months ago, and even though she could barely get through a single level she loved it...

The kid is 11 and plays videogames. Obviously he'll be uneducated and unappreciative. Not all kids are like this. My brother and I played Contra when he was 11 and I think he liked it.

Not suprised really. I'm not a fan of the original Contra either. I think its a mistake for the guy to show the kid incredibly difficult games. I'd be more interested in what the kid thought of something from that era that was accessible like Mario Bros. Contra is just tedious if you play it out of context.

im not sure that this kid represents all young gamers.

my 7 year old brother actually really likes playing the old Sonic the hedgehog, as well as the original golden axe, thats probably because he has me to show him these kinds of games (the games I played while growing up)

Haha, man Battletoads was horribly hard. I still try to beat it this day! But as far as the post at hand goes, I suppose that everyones' entitled to an opinion.. Not sure if he was really comparing it to Halo or CoD, which if he was, it's simply uncomparable. Sort of like if you compared Mega Man to Final Fantasy, simply cannot do it. I personally like Contra, and nearly all of them (the retro ones mostly).

The kid just has played more recent games. There aren't any effects. The reason why we all like it so much is because it was cutting age for us at one time, and nostalgia has taken over. But that game is still a ton of fun to play, so I don't know what that kids problem is. Maybe there wasn't enough pokemon and Master Chiefs in it.

Nostalgia is what is making you think this lad has no taste.

I don't like contra either, just feels like the difficulty was more broken than just devilishly hard also there are better games out now than contra.

The first super mario is out shined by games of today.

I used to think SAM and MAX hit the road until i found out that nostalgia had been clouding my vision and found better games.

Gamers today are soft... games were a lot harder at one point, just before save systems came into play heavily... you had to work from the start with three lives (or the Konami Code :D ). You had to earn every inch of platform, every power-up, every extra life. Of COURSE the kid's gonna hate it. That's a given no matter how "cool" he is. It's not his era of gaming and he's not old enough to have perspective let alone nostalgia.

And to the 16 year-old talking about "Back In The Day":

I remember a time without ANY video games. We had books and Chess and Monopoly or we went outside or to the movies for less than a dollar. Consider yourself privileged, even with today's ticket prices.

That would be your opinion. Personally I found Battletoads to be MUCH harder that Contra.

Actually I never really thought Contra was all that hard, just a bit harder than the norm :?

I agree with the statement about "Super Ghouls & Ghosts"... one of the hardest-core games ever programmed. And over-all, I thought "Contra" was a bit harder than "BattleToads". I remember the night I was introduced to "BattleToads", I called my buddy a *** (bundle of sticks) for buying it. Then we started playin' it...

I totally agree with ya. I had my 15 year old cousin try Bionic Commando and other oldschool games. He could NOT get through it, started having a fit how there wasn't a password or anything like that. I was like "Dude. Welcome to the 80s." He always brags about how much of a "master" at gaming he is when really he sits around playing Halo all day. Honestly, the majority of people I play on Halo are easy. It's not that hard of a concept to get: shoot whatever moves that doesn't have your color. Hardly a challenge. I much prefer older games like Contra, because it's worth every cent you paid. Nothing comes easy, and you feel a huge sense of pride upon beating it. Games nowadays, after I beat it I'm like ".. That's it? Wow. What a waste." The industries have really dumbed down these days..

I dont get all the hoopla about this damn article? Of course the kid will be turned away by the graphics/gameplay/sound/difficulty,etc. Gamers these days are spoiled with rich graphics and a gameplay that caters more to putting in work to complete a game rather than playing a max difficulty. Its more rewarding to win than constantly losing at some difficult game ( in the eyes of developers). Its is expected that the kid would react in such a manner. Useless video if I may say so. I play JRPGS and stick to SMT series, because this game you can die easily.

Indeed I am, I will admit that. It is quite a privilege to live in at time where we have such forms of entertainment and technologies as video games (and being able to practically download any movie, song, video game, or car and watch/play it on our computers ;)).

I guess I used the ol' "Back in the Day" phrase since even though I am only 16 years of age, my video game tastes (along with my early start in video games with an SNES at age 2 or 3) make me feel much much older than many of my peers. This makes me look down upon those my age and younger who lambaste games from long before they were born with the sort of Old Man "When I was your age..." mentality, even though technically I am far from being old.

Well, we're really biased. We (most of us anyway) grew up playing or heard about these games. It also depends on the type of kid. He's 11, he doesn't know how to judge it properly (judging it by NES standards) and he's probably only ever played Xbox. So of course he won't like it. It's not the end of the world though, he's 1 kid.

I think games then were more cheap and broken than they were difficult. I have battletoads, and there is no reason why a game should ever be as hard as that game was.

Perhaps the 11-year-old might like Contra III: The Alien Wars on SNES or Contra 4 on Nintendo DS - they have more effects and more updated graphics.

THATS IT!

CHIK KA! (loads gun)

UP, DOWN, UP, DOWN, LEFT, RIGHT, LEFT, RIGHT, B, A, START! PROBLEM SOLVED XD

Dude, this game is boring alone, trust me, I did it like a few days ago, I beat it, but thinking back now. I wish I cried because I remember playing it with my friend, doing such ownage, and now its just me... Same with Golden Axe, 2 player is the best, but alone its ok, but its like playing a average game.. Same thing with Halo CE, alone its pretty fun, but its really meant for two people blowing everything up!

Don't parents know how to have their parenting decisions made for them? Videogame ratings are totally broken, I decide what my daughter can or cannot play, or watch me play.

Also I wish everyone would lay off the kid, he's 11. My first system was Intellivision and after Burgertime, Pitfall, and Night Stalker, I never "appreciated" Pong or just about anything the 2600 had to offer. It's just a generational gap, nothing to ridicule somebody over.

I agree with the generation gap. I mean, if you tell a kid who grows up with games today, and you have him play pong or asteroids, of course hes not going to like it.

I'm not surprised, most of us that lived and played durring the NES, SNES and Sega Console era do enjoy older games then the newer generation. Kinda the "Old geezer" effect. "Everything was so much better back in the Ol'days" which the younger people don't agree with.

So you would expose your daughter (presumably 11 yrs or younger ) to a violent, slightly gored game with vulgar language like COD? There are some M rated games whose rating system is broken but most are right and COD is rightly rated as M or at least 16+
