Please respond with who you believe should win, and will win, as well as any comments or critiques to my own thoughts on the matter. The author has not played all of the titles in the list, and in many cases based his opinion on those of others or interpretations of Gamespot reviews. His opinions are subject to change.
2007 has been a banner year for gamers regardless of their hardware selection. Whether it has been increased competition, strong economic environment, the attractiveness of the video game marketplace, or the deeper pockets of aging gamers, the results have been nothing short of fantastic. The question now becomes: How will Gamespot select their game of the year?

There is an absolute bevy of options to select from, and comparing Super Mario Galaxy to Halo 3 is like comparing apples and oranges. We can assume that Gamespot will limit their selection pool to those titles with a score of at least 9.0, but not necessarily to those with a 9.5, due to the change in the scoring system. Enough, on with the games!

CANDIDATES

Title: Crysis
GS Score: 9.5
Platform(s): PC
Outlook: Four of the top six rated games released in 2007 were first-person shooters, and for good reason: they are amazing. Crysis is at an advantage of not being a sequel, and sticking to a great storyline that keeps the player motivated. It also does not hurt that it is one of the most visually impressive games ever released. Still, it is not exactly original. Humans with super-powered suits battle aliens? Been there.

Title: Super Mario Galaxy
GS Score: 9.5
Platform(s): Wii
Outlook: Reviewer Alex Navarro described it as, "one of Mario's best adventures," which says volumes considering its lineage. Appealing to every level of gamer and every age, this is a top three if not top two title for Game of the Year.

Title: Halo 3
GS Score: 9.5
Platform(s): Xbox360
Outlook: Halo 3 was the best title in its series, and brought the mayhem of the franchise to the Xbox360. Working in its favor are its incredible graphics, solid multiplayer, and intriguing storyline. Many users complained that Halo 3 had an unsatisfying ending, and that despite additional features they had, "been there, done that." Those points are debatable.

Title: The Orange Box
GS Score: 9.5
Platform(s): PC, Xbox360, PS3 (soon)
Outlook: Three games - all of which might have scored a 9.0 or above on their own - for the price of one virtually guarantee this title to be a top-three finalist. Portal itself, a surprise bonus for many players, may be the icing that nets Orange Box the victory. There are two possible detractors. One is minor in that its Mature rating limits its availability to the youngest gamers. The real issue is that awarding Game of the Year to Orange Box is awarding Game of the Year to multiple titles.

Title: World In Conflict
GS Score: 9.5
Platform(s): PC
Outlook: The great sucking sound made this year was from the Gamespot user collective, drawing their breath in shock at the score for World In Conflict, which came seemingly out of nowhere. Since its release users have been invading- and repelling-invasion and snatchnig up copies of the limited edition to garner an authentic piece of the Berlin Wall. World In Conflict offered numerous real-time-strategy innovations, impressive graphics, and top-notch voice acting, and may just surprise gamers again by taking the Game of the Year title.

Title: The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion
GS Score: 9.5
Platform(s): PS3
Outlook: Not a chance. Oblivion was already a contender in 2006 on other platforms. Like many other top-rated games, it made its way to the PS3 a little late, but has since been entertaining thousands of PS3 gamers. Still not a contender for Game of the Year, though.

Title: Forza Motorsport 2
GS Score: 9.2
Platform(s): Xbox360
Outlook: Not a chance. Sports and driving games are a virtual annuity for some producers, like the Madden series of football titles, but rarely do they win a category-sweeping victory. When it comes down to it, a driving game today is little different than a driving game ten years ago except in physics and graphical power: you still just drive. Forza Motorsport is an exemplary title in its genre, but for Game of the Year, a title requires a bit more depth and/or originality.

Title: God of War II
GS Score: 9.2
Platform(s): PS2
Outlook: God of War II took everything its predecessor did and made it bigger, badder, and better. More story, more bosses, more fighting; Kratos is one angry demi-God. That being said, the game was a little too straightforward to garner a Game of the Year. You could conceivably smash your way hulk-like through the game. The combat system was a little disappointing. The drawbacks are minor, but just significant enough to allow its competition through.

Title: World of Warcraft: The Burning Crusade (PC)
GS Score: 9.2
Platform(s): PC
Outlook: Not a chance. The original won Game of the Year 2004, and The Burning Crusade requires the original to function. If it were a standalone title, or included the original, it might be another story, but as it stands the excellent expansion may not exactly qualify for Game of the Year.

Title: Resident Evil 4: Wii Edition
GS Score: 9.1
Platform(s): Wii
Outlook: Not a chance. A new interface is not enough to take a previously released title and make it Game of the Year, even if it was a great game.

Title: Galactic Civilizations II: Dark Avatar
GS Score: 9.1
Platform(s): PC
Outlook: In a word, Nerdtastic. Those that played its muse are likely playing this title right now, one of the most addictive space-faring concepts to ever come to the PC. That being said, it is just too nerdy. This might sound counter-intuitive on a web site dedicated to video games, but even among the nerds this title is a cult hit. This is a shame, because it was one of the best titles of 2007.

Title: WarioWare: Smooth Moves
GS Score: 9.1
Platform(s): Wii
Outlook: Not a chance. Any minigame compilation taking game of the year would raise such an outcry from the Gamespot community that the bandwidth strain would shut down the site forever. Either that, or it is one of the best minigame party games ever created, and will shock and confuse the entire community with its victory. Yeah, right.

Title: Assassin's Creed
GS Score: 9.0
Platform(s): PS3, Xbox360
Outlook: Anyone that ever played a Thief title waited with bated breath for this game, and were rewarded with a stellar experience. Reviews indicate the game has everything going for it, with only a few minor visual qualms. In fact, reviewers liked everything from the soundtrack to the pacing and environment; it was surprising it did not garner a score over 9.0 from Gamespot staff. With a score of 9.0 and complaints of its repetitiveness from users, it is unlikely to be selected for Game of the Year.

Title: Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare
GS Score: 9.0
Platform(s): PC, PS3, Xbox360
Outlook: The only problem noted with Call of Duty 4 was that it was too short, typically an indication of the reviewer's love affair with a title. In this case it resulted in a point reduction, as nothing else was noted to be wrong with the game. In fact, it might just be an underdog candidate for the Game of the Year title given its premier reception from the community.

Title: Gears of War
GS Score: 9.0
Platform(s): PC
Outlook: Not a chance; Gears of War won as best title of 2006, a rerelease for the PC is not going to net the game the title for a second year, even with some added content. The competition is too stiff. Great screenshots, though.

Title: Puzzle Quest: Challenge of the Warlords
GS Score: 9.0
Platform(s): XBox360
Outlook: Not a chance. Puzzle titles are great, and all, but it would be surprising to find a user at Gamespot that would select Puzzle Quest over Halo 3 or World In Conflict, among others. The inevitable uproar in the forums that would follow the section of Puzzle Quest for Game of the Year alone is worth avoiding the hassle.

Title: The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass
GS Score: 9.0
Platform(s): DS
Outlook: The only DS title on the list is, appropriately, a Zelda title. Its innovative controls and engaging puzzles got more than one Gamespot staffer addicted. As a handheld title, however, it faces an uphill battle. A handheld title has never been selected as a Game of the Year.

Title: BioShock
GS Score: 9.0
Platform(s): PC, XBox360
Outlook: "Halo 3 killer," was mentioned more than once in the online forums. Working in its favor are one of the most intriguing, thoughtful, and well-paced storylines ever brought to the gaming medium, amazing visuals, and art direction that caused more than one gamer to fall out of their chair. Working against it is a lack of replayability, no multiplayer option, and its easy level of difficulty. Still, the game has a strong chance of taking the top spot, despite its half-point rating deficit.

Title: Super Paper Mario
GS Score: 8.8
Platform(s): Wii
Outlook: The Paper Mario series of games have a visual styIe all their own, great combat, and an entertaining storyline. At this point, however, the visuals have been seen before, and the quirky gameplay may not suit all gamers. While an amazing experience for fans of the series, there are more accessable titles that muscle Super Paper Mario out of consideration for the top slot.

Title: Ninja Gaiden Sigma
GS Score: 9.0
Platform(s): PS3
Outlook: Review Kevin VanOrd described the title as "the best way to play one of the best, most brutal action games ever made." Sigma was one of the best titles in its series, but its lower rating and stiff competition make it a dark horse for victory.

Title: Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Vegas
GS Score: 9.0
Platform(s): PS3
Outlook: Not a chance. A latecomer to the PS3 platform, it had its chance once already in 2006 on other platforms, it will not get another.

Title: Command & Conquer 3 Tiberium Wars
GS Score: 9.0
Platform(s): PC
Outlook: Tiberium Wars offered a polished presentation and was an admirable follow-up to its predecessors. Kane returned, and the game itself is a fantastic play. Unfortunately, it was hampered by a loss of content relative to predecessors, such as the complete absence of naval combat. One of the best parts of its predecessors was creating novel units, such as C&C2's Chrono Ivan and Yuri Prime. The three faction system of C&C3 made it feel more like a Starcraft clone than a unique C&C title. Finally, the game was not even mentioned in the Gamespot Preliminaries.

Title: Universe At War: Earth Assault
GS Score: TBD
Platform(s): PC
Outlook: General chatter in the forums indicates that Universe at War is unlikely to be a contender for Game of the Year. There are apparently problems with the interface and poor unit heirarchy, though time will tell once the retail version is released.

BOZANIMAL'S PREDICTIONS

Finalists: Crysis, Halo 3, and Super Mario Galaxy

Who Should Win: Super Mario Galaxy
Super Mario Galaxy revived the aging platformer after Luigi's Mansion and Super Mario Sunshine brought into question the relevance of the plumbing duo. Mario returns in a new and intuitive way while still feeling familiar. The title was unilaterally accepted as one of the best games for the Wii, and one of Mario's best ever, stopping short of saying it exceeded Super Mario 64 (widely regarded as the best in the series). While it should win Game of the Year, and very well may, the competition in 2007 is very, very stiff. Losing is not necessarily an insult.

Who Will Win: Halo 3
Halo 3 lived up to player expectations, bringing its own brand of multiplayer first-person shooter to the Xbox 360 with stunning visuals and fantastic gameplay. Its incredible and deserved popularity practically beg for the Game of the Year award. That being said, it did very little that was novel. While new gameplay modes and a finalized storyline are all well and good, similar experiences are available from multiple titles on multiple platforms. Certainly it is still a great game, but is it worthy of Game of the Year when so many other amazing titles have been released? Only time will tell.

Make no mistake, fanboys and girls, I think every title here is awesome. But how to select the awesomest?

Any possibility of getting this or a thread like it stickied to capture all Game of the Year discussions, since they are coming up shortly?

Happy Holidays,

Boz

Same here. IMO Halo 3 owns all the games here... (the title and subject of the thread would be Halo 3 vs. Orange Box). ;)

 I said basically the same thing, that aliens and FPS had a "been there, done that" feel. You make a good point, though, in that two "defending against alien sci-fi FPS" titles are likely candidates for Game of the Year.

Who Should win?

Super Mario Galaxy. Easily the best game I have played all year, if not all gen. Truly the first game to utilize the Nintendo Wii's features perfectly, SMG feels like a pefect blend of 2/D and 3/D Mario games. I loved the level design and the way the game flows. The only real flaws I believe is the lack of voice acting and the lack of a story that hasn't been told a billion times (though both are stables of the Mario series.)

Who will win?

Crysis, UT 2k7 or Halo 3. People love their FPS' and this year was a damn good year for them.

I would be surprised if Mario Galaxy didn't win this year. It is one of the few great games that isn't a shooter and it rekindles a genre that is on the verge of death.

First off, I'm a big Halo fan and fondly enjoyed Halo 3. If Halo 3 wins GOTY, i'll fall out of my chair laughing.

A lot of these games are basically just more of the same "Yet another FPS" drivel. If I had to say, I feel Super Mario Galaxy or Portal should get GOTY.

I have many doubts about this year GOTY. I hope that those preliminaries are based on gamestop game sales. Just look at that list there is Kane and Lych with 6.0 and no The Witcher with 8.5 Who should win? IMHO Mario Galaxy. But hey it's just one vote, will see what future will bring us.

Hmm, I see more than a few predictions for Super Mario Galaxy. I certainly wouldn't be surprised if it won. Still, Gamespot loves first-person shooters. It is going to be a very tough year.

I haven't played Crysis yet, but I'll include it in my list here. The only ones I can really comment on (with it thrown in) are:

Crysis
Super Mario Galaxy
The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion
God of War 2

Crysis: It sounds like the ultimate FPS, seriously, from the standpoints of tech., gameplay, and length.

SMG: Superb game. Haven't had a platformer this good since... well, apparently since SM64 or the SNES/NES days.

TES4: Great, but I don't think it deserves GotY due to it being changed from TES3 in some bad ways.

GoW2: Absolutely superb, but it's a sequel that does almost everything like the first game.

From the standpoint of originality, I'd say SMG should get GotY. From the standpoint of "ultimate gaming experience", probably Crysis (again, I'm going off what I've heard). TES4 is a DAMN good adventure and GoW2 is a DAMN fine game, but I don't think either should get the award.

The only real flaws I believe is the lack of voice acting-Cranium

Oh, it had some voice acting... it was just incomplete (i.e. in something like "Please save us!", only "Please" would be heard).

and the lack of a story that hasn't been told a billion times (though both are stables of the Mario series.)

No kidding, but it didn't hamper the game any, thankfully. :D

My Predictions

ACTION ADVENTURE
Should Win: God of War II - I don't think any other action adventure title matched God of War this year.

Will Win: God of War II

ROLE PLAYING GAME
Should Win: The Witcher - A debut studio managed to deliver an RPG equal or better then the top veteran studios have delivered in recent years. This game was everything an RPG bills itself on. It had a solid storyline, solid character development, exploration....but most of all it delivered in areas that other RPGs seem to have fallen in a rut, The Witcher offered real grey choices that were ambigious and actually had consequence that was a good break away from the typical cut and dry "good vs. evil" route that many RPGs fall into. And unlike some of the more hyped games of the year in this genre, this game was an RPG to the core....not some hybrid that tried to fuse Shooter and RPG together....this game was an RPG to the bone. Unfortunately the fact it's not even listed in the preliminary choices (while Hellgate London is) shows me this game seems to have slipped under the radar of Gamespot's editors and I have a feeling few of them even managed to play this excellent game.

Will Win: Mass Effect - Mass Effect has an excellent story, but to me it seems more of an RPG hybrid then a core RPG not to mention it's very clear that the game was FAR from being polished with some sites labeling it as one of the buggiest releases in years. Still, it's the popular favorite so I'm sure Gamespot will give it the vote.

SHOOTER
Should Win: Crysis / HL2: Orange Box - Crysis delivered a solid gameplay experience in the face of doubters who claimed this game would be nothing more then graphics. What's more is Crysis is the game this year that has taken visuals and interactive environments to the next level, which is definitely a benefit to the genre going forward. It delivered a solid single player campaign of a good length, something that is becoming increasing rare these days, while also offering the player a variety of options to approach scenerios within that campaign which definitely adds to replayability.
Meanwhile HL2 Orange Box delivered literally the best value out of any package this year. You got an excellent single player, one of the best multiplayer games in quite awhile, and one of the most innovative games to hit the FPS genre in years.

Will Win: Call of Duty 4 - Another popular favorite. Though short, it had a good mix of single player and multiplayer. I have a feeling it'll get picked because it's the popular title that doesn't fall so much into the realm of being chosen on a hyped name alone.

OVERALL GOTY
Should Win: Super Mario Galaxy - A title that appeals to all ages and is enjoyable to both "hardcore" and "casual" alike, SMG is also very innovative in it's design and approach, but most of all, it's probably the most enjoyable game I've come across this year....which is what it all really comes down to. What's also great is SMG is a game you can enjoy for a quick 20 minute session or for hours on end. Then again, I expect nothing less from Miyamoto game.

Will Win: Super Mario Galaxy - I have a feeling Gamespot (as well as other sites) will pick SMG for the reasons I listed above, also, because to many it would be a big surprise move, which Gamespot is known for.

Really tough call this year since there are alot of great games that are worthy of taking it. The most notable ones for me are God of War II, Halo 3, Mass Effect, Super Mario Galaxy, Crysis, and Bioshock.

I wouldn't mind seeing Mass Effect win. I'm nearly at 40 hours of game time with still quite alot of side missions to do and I'm absolutely loving this game. It's too bad there are some technical issues such as some really horrible texture pop-in because huge props to the writers of this game as it's incredibly detailed and very engrossing. I think the tech issues may hold this one back.

Crysis looks stunning with an incredible amount of interactive environments but I think it's demanding specs may hold it back.

I have Bioshock but haven't been able to play it yet and while I loved the demo it really sounds lik it's one of oh so close games with a few annoyances that held it back from it's potential.

While I thought God of War II was incredible the other games in the list just seemed to impress me a little bit more.

In the end I think it's going to be a neck and neck race between Halo 3 and Super Mario Galaxy. I'm going for Halo 3 mostly because I played that one so I know what it's like. While not the best looking 360 game it does look quite nice and there were so many great new features in it that I loved such as the replay theater where you can capture pictures and save videos of you favourite moments, the Forge editor where you can make some really cool map variants or simply run around and check out all the little nooks and crannys in the original maps to help give you an edge over the competition, also the multi-player is fantastic and as incredibly addictive as it was in Halo 2 and even moreso with expience points and ranks to strive for.

Super Mario Galaxy is also getting incredible praise and is a game that looks to appeal to a very wide audience so that game is no slouch either.

I agree with archangel regarding Crysis. It looks amazing, and I'd love to play it, but the very high system specs for the game will definitely hurt its chances. My vote is for Call of Duty 4, which is an amazing game on all 3 platforms (a big plus) , and its multiplayer is the best in a shooter in a long while. Also, Infinity Ward finally bucked the World War 2 trend, and moved the series to modern times. Orange Box is also an extremely strong contender because of the amazing value throughout. An awesome campaign with Half Life 2, plus episodes 1 and 2 - a fun multiplayer component with Team Fortress 2, and a very unique puzzle game (Portal). I don't think Halo 3 was good enough in comparison to the other 2, despite the added features.

I think Super Mario Galaxy will win GOTY though, because Mario is a sentimental favorite, and he returned in very strong fashion after a 5 year haitus. Nintendo finally produced a game worth buying a Wii for.

GOTY: Super Mario Galaxy

Runners up: Call of Duty 4, Half Life 2: Orange Box

Personally I'd probably give Mass Effect GOTY but out of those it would be either Halo 3, TOB or Forza 2.

I have a feeling SMG will take GS' GOTY though.

Personally, I'm pulling for Bioshock as a dark horse, but in reality, I see Game of the Year going to Crysis or Super Mario Galaxy.

I think your prediction of Halo 3 as "Who Will Win" is incredibly off; while the reviewers did rate it highly, they recognize exactly the problems you had with it. Its status as a sequel, as well as its lack of 'novel' changes, definitely hurt it in a quest for Game of the Year.

This is speaking from a Gamespot perspective. Other establishments, such as Time Magazine, are not geared so heavily into the gaming community and, thus, would fail to recognize such things, instead falling into the hype surrounding the game, as well as and most importantly: its ridiculous sales. In such a mind, sales so high as Halo 3's represent universal gamer approval, which would indicate Game of the Year. Gamespot, however, doesn't fall for such things, or so I believe. Halo 3 is a good game, even a great game, but it's not a Game of the Year.

So my picks are as follows:

Should Win: Crysis or SMG

Will Win: Crysis or SMG

should win: super mario galaxy. easily. its the most complete and highly polished game put out this year bar none.

will win: probably crysis. i don't think halo 3 was fresh enough to do it. i think crysis impressed gamespot more.

user GOTY i see smg having no chance of winning. i think gamespot's user base is more shooter friendly than mario friendly. will be interesting. my guess is crysis or halo 3.

The Two games that have the greatest chance of winning GotY are Super Mario Galaxy and Halo 3. This is because of pure popularity. I feel that Bioshock and Orange Box should rightfully have an equal chance at toping the list, but thats not the way the Voting will go.

My prediction is that Halo 3 will win the vote.

Other than Orange Box, SMG, Bioshock, and Halo 3; my list of Nominees would also include God of War 2, Rockband, Mass Effect, and CoD4.

I will name my picks for Genres in my next post

Ill just base it on games on the 2 consoles I have (Xbox 360 and Wii)

Xbox 360:

Should Win: BioShock (2K Boston/2K Games)- No game this year has set up an atmosphere like BioShock has. From the moment you descend into the sea and into the busted dystopian city of Rapture, you feel like you are part of a living, breathing world. The gameplay in this game is absolutely flawless and the "choose your own adventure" style of gaming really works wonders how. The only drawbacks are the lack of multiplayer and a fairly easy difficulty level. Other than that, BioShock shows that gaming can truly be an art form and is the most incredible piece ofgaming I have seen yet on a next-generation console.

Will Win: Halo 3 (Bungie Studios/Microsoft Game Studios)- Don't get me wrong, Halo 3 was fun but it didn't grab and take a hold of me the way BioShock did. However, what sets this game apart from others is the amazing replay value. From an online mode that will be played for years to come to a feature that essentially lets you modify the game to your own likings, Halo 3 will win the Xbox 360 GOTY because of one reason: it represents what Microsoft has envisioned for its console all along: the social atmosphere. No game this year has become a cultural phenomenon as this one. When you say Xbox 360, you think of Halo 3 and that in definition is what defines a game of the year.

Wii:

Should Win, Will Win and Overall GOTY: Super Mario Galaxy (Nintendo EAD/Nintendo)- My choice of overall GOTY should come at no surprise. SMG represents why we all play video games in the first place: the fun factor. No game this year came close to touching the amount of fun that this game has. It is quite odd that one of the oldest gaming characters in history can still be charming today but as long as Nintendo keeps making games like this, they have nothing to fear. I dare anyone to play this game and not flash a smile at some point. The gameplay is absolutely refined to near perfection and the amount of things you do throughout the course of this game will make other titles blush. Added to the fact that this is the rare AAA title that can be enjoyed by the whole family and you get the reason why SMG wins overall GOTY: nothing this year is as refined and polished as this one.

My other GOTY choices:

Shooter GOTY: BioShock (2K Boston/2K Games)

RPG GOTY: Mass Effect (BioWare/Microsoft Game Studios)

Racer GOTY: Sega Rally Revo (Sega Driving Studio/Sega)

Adventure GOTY: Zack and Wiki: Quest for Barbaros' Treasure (Capcom)

Action GOTY: Assassin's Creed (Ubisoft Montreal/Ubisoft)

Sports GOTY: Skate (EA Black Box/EA)

Rythym GOTY: Rock Band (Harmonix/MTV Games/EA)

XBLA GOTY: Prince of Persia (Gameloft/Ubisoft)

Top 10 Games of 2007

  1. Super Mario Galaxy
  2. BioShock
  3. Assassin's Creed
  4. Mass Effect
  5. Rock Band
  6. The Darkness
  7. Super Paper Mario
  8. Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock
  9. Zackand Wiki: Quest for Barbaros' Treasure
  10. The Simpsons Game

SUPER MARIO GALAXY IS ONE OF THOSE FUN GAMES EVERYONE CAN PLAY, UNLIKE ALMOST ALL OF THE OTHER CHOICES MAKING IT MORE LIKELY TO WIN. I PERSONALLY FEEL ITS BETWEEN SUPER MARIO, ASSASSINS CREED, AND HALO 3.

It's going to come down to eitherA World in Conflictor Galaxy. The other main nominees just have a little bit too much in common with one another, being of the same genre. That just makesWiC and Galaxy stand out that much more. But if I had to say which one, I'd lean towards Galaxy. Conciously or not, Gamespot loves to give "GOTY" awards to Nintendo. Last year Oblivion grabbed the title so I don't see Nintendo getting locked out 2 years in a row.

If your logic is correct then why wouldn't A World in Conflict have a chance, and I'm sorry Crysis may a revolution in the FPS genre, but it is still a FPS so actually your assertion makes very little sense.

My mistake. I actually meant World in Conflict. Crysis was the last thing I read on the thread subject and it seemed to get stuck in my head.

Mass Effect is my GOTY. No other game even came close. There were lots of solid games this year but the vast majority of them were far too generic or had a been there done that feel for me to consider them to be the best game of the year. No idea what gamespot will pick. What advertised the most on this site and is good enough to get GOTY without raising an eyebrow? I saw a lot of Crysis ads over a long period of time so I'm going to go with it.

Its going to be between Crysis and Super Mario Galaxy. Halo 3 has great multiplayer but what it does isn't nearly as great as these two games.

I actually disagree about the preference towards Nintendo on Gamespot's part. If anything, I think the site is incredibly unpredictable. If Serious Sam and Freespace 2 can take the crown (Freespace at least definitely deserved it), I think any highly rated game is a real candidate.

Like I said, the main reason why SMG will win GOTY is because it is a showcase for the main reason why we play games in the first place: its fun. It also helps that its a game that anyone can play (granted they can actually find a Wii on store shelves) If Super Mario Galaxy does not win, I will be very shocked.

Should Win : Mass Effect. Aside from some stupid AI (which really doesn't ruin the gameplay) and pop up rendering occaisonally (Halo 2 had that problem and look where it went), this game has an amazing blend of shooting and strategy, combined with fantastic graphics and music and voice acting rolled up in a nice RPG shell. The succulent story reduction tops it perfectly. This goes beyond gaming, the actual choices you make are deep moral ones that not only affect you personally as an observer, but they do affect your gameplay in and of itself. Bioshock "tried" this, but in no way does it offer the depth Mass Effect does.

8.5 rating of this game was criminal.

Will Win : Halo 3.... duh, as much as I don't want it to.

I think it's between Crysis and Galaxy. I sure hope Galaxy will win, and i believe that its originality will let it rise above the others.

Uncharted scored an 8.0 on Gamespot; great, but probably not up for Game of the Year.

Super Mario Galaxy will win GameSpot's GOTY. It's a brilliant, brilliant game and the best platformer ever made. The two games I think will garner some serious arguments, though, will be Rock Band and BioShock. Crysis will be perceived as an incredible piece of technology first, and an incredible game second, which will hurt its chances.

Super Mario Galaxy. Brilliant level design, excellent controls, undeniable charm, and flat out enjoyable every step of the way.

I don't know if Halo 3 has what it takes. I played it again last night split screen co-op, and the pop-up was horrible. It's still a great game, and maybe the multiplayer is a big factor (haven;t played it online), but playing it again last night made me see a few things wrong with it.

Rock Band could also surprise.

Looks like effort went into that first post.

I don't know how you can predict GameSpot, at least this year.

I've seen two GotY's so far.

The VGA's had Jeff Gerstmann, Ricardo Torres, Shane Shatterfield, Andy McNamara, and Dan Hsu on their panel. The editors in chief of GameSpot,Game Informer, and EGM, with three or four current or former GameSpot editors. They gave it to BioShock, and before that Britain gave it to BioShock (BAFTA awards). GotY has to be some sort of legitimate award, and you're going to either be right or wrong.

BioShock I believe is good for the future of the industry; certain books and movies I had read and seen enabled me to see how great BioShock was. There is more under the sun than dreamt of by your or my philosophy. That's the risk of arguing GotY, and the great satisfaction when some of us in this very thread were proven right that BioShock was not broken and would not only be a contender but would indeed win multiple GotY's. :)

there are only two games that actually deserve GOTY. SMG and COD4. Period.
