It's going to come down to eitherA World in Conflictor Galaxy. The other main nominees just have a little bit too much in common with one another, being of the same genre. That just makesWiC and Galaxy stand out that much more. But if I had to say which one, I'd lean towards Galaxy. Conciously or not, Gamespot loves to give "GOTY" awards to Nintendo. Last year Oblivion grabbed the title so I don't see Nintendo getting locked out 2 years in a row.Robio_basic
World in Conflict doesn't stand a chance. It's probably going to be in the 10 finalists as a recognition of its quality, but it's filler. And the RTS genre is no less crowded than the FPS (besides World in Conflict, there were plenty of highly acclaimed RTS games released this year including Supreme Commander, Command & Conquer 3, and Company of Heroes: Opposing Fronts). What truly stands out this year is Portal and I'll be rooting for The Orange Box despite all the 'buh...buh, it's not just one game' cries from the game community because it is the most complete, awesomely fantastic, addictive, and innovative release of the year. If the GameSpot staff truly had a better time with something else, that's all well and good, but I hope to God that they don't exclude it on a silly technicality like most people did.
I agree with you that Super Mario Galaxy stands the best chance of winning GameSpot's GOTY - GameSpot does love Nintendo and it seems Galaxy delivered in spades.
I agree with all you said, Oilers. I'm just glad we were right about BioShock. I hope some of the other legitimate awards are spread around, to games certain posters here want, because it's quite satisfactory that GotY's give one of the few chances to prove non-expert negative dwellerswrong, and GameSpot's GotY would be a big fish for some of the people whosegames are being attacked, but I can't think of one game wrongly attacked as much as BioShock.
Its not a technicality, did you play a GAME called the Orange Box... no you did not. You played five games within a package titled the Orange Box. Each game in there is its own SEPERATE game. Those games should all get individual nominations for GOTY. If not then every compilation should be seen as one game, what if MS released the The 360 box including Halo 3, Bioshock and Mass Effect in one box and it won every GOTY award, it makes no sense.dvader654
It is a technicality. The Orange Box has the same exact components as virtually any FPS - they're just called differently. None of the games can really stand on their own - despite their individual awesomeness, they work best as a package. Episode Two is the single-player component, Team Fortress 2 is the multiplayer, and Portal is...well, Portal. Why stop with The Orange Box then? Why not seperate Halo 3 into single-player, multiplayer, and The Forge? The Orange Box is NOT a compilation, a compilation implies a collection of previously released games jammed into one package. The Orange Box is a carefully planned selection of games designed to provide the ultimate FPS experience...and then some. Obviously, when discussing GOTY awards, I'm pretty much ignoring Half-Life 2 and Episode One.
I'd love to see World in conflict win, just to reward some polished innovation (not that I've played it to be honest, but I'll trust all those reviewers and gamers). It probably won't happen though because it's not really a blockbuster game this year, and it has loads of strong competition.
On the subject of COD4, I think it was a great game, but shouldn't win GOTY. Of course I loved it, but the change in setting (WW2 to modern) doesn't mean it's not more of the same. People usually say games like halo 3 are more of the same, but that's also true for the other 90% of the shooters out there. Only shooters like portal and shadowrun can't be penalized for that. Also COD4 had nice gameplay, but both in SP and MP it misses that final touch to make it work just right. In SP the pace is still defined by the infinately spawning enemies, and it's short, and in MP the matchmaking could have been way better together with the balance.
I'd love to see World in conflict win, just to reward some polished innovation (not that I've played it to be honest, but I'll trust all those reviewers and gamers).11Marcel
World in Conflict isn't innovative at all, it follows the template set by Relic's Company of Heroes very closely (except that it's nowhere near as atmospheric nor intense), or if you want to go even further back, Massive's own Ground Control II. Not only that, but in my opinion, it's not that great overall either.
Its still seperate indiviudal works put together in one package. Yes together they serve as the components of a FPS with all those elements but thats not how it was designed. It was still seperate teams working on seperate games. You can even buy the games stand alone on steam, they are not one game. Halo 3 is all the same product, Halo 3 is all those compenents its all that one game, one group making one game. I don't know much about the history of the development of the Orange Box but if you can show me that from the very beginning The Orange Box was planned and then they decided to create these games for it than fine, I can see it as one game. But if it was the opposite, these games were designed seperatelyand then it was decided to bring them together in one package I don't see it as fair to other games to be compared to a compilation package.dvader654
I'm not sure how do you expect me to answer that. Obviously I don't know that, I don't work for Valve, but quite honestly, I don't see what it matters how it started, the important thing is how it ended. It's not one game, I'm not arguing that it's one game - it's three games that make up a larger, coherent whole. What I can tell you is that Valve is a rather small company which employs only 150 people. If you ever played a Valve game, you might have noticed in the credits that no positions are ever listed, just a list of names. They all pretty much work together on everything. I know for a fact that Valve's writers Marc Laidlaw and Erik Wolpaw worked on both Episode Two and Portal. Hell, the same exact woman lends her voice to GLaDOS in Portal, the Combine Overwatch in Half-Life 2 games and the announcer in Team Fortress 2. As for it being fair to other games, I really don't care. It's not Valve's fault no one managed to create such a fantastic and varied package. This is something that should be encouraged, not the other way around.
CoD 4 should win
Galaxy will win
Crysis and Bioshock dont deserve to win
Orange Box, WIC and Halo 3 wont win
As much as I'd love to see Oblivion win this one, I think it's painfully obvious it's most likely going to be Halo 3.Zanninsei
Um go back to 2006 for oblivion ok?
SMG may be very simple and fun,but I really don't think it should win. I think Bioshock should win because it's an intelligent, very well thought out and beautiful game. Everything from the atmosphere to the story to the diaries all feels so perfect. That's a true winner for me.
I'm trying to see something about the GotY's; have there been any others announced? If there's no link, I'm relying on a pm or post in response to another thread. X-Play's is tonight.

Hey now!! Nobody likes a porky-mouth! This game will be legendary despite all the 7's it seems to be universally getting from every site and magazine that's reviewed it. There's still potential.
And for the record it's Sam Adam's Winter Lager. . . just in time for the holidays.

Nights is great but it never was a GOTY contender. Does it come out this week? Or next week?
This week. Either tomorrow or Wednesday. I've seen both the 18th and 19th listed as in-store dates. Either way I'll be getting it the day it comes out and will quickly be dolling out my impressions.

Afterall is said and done I will end up picking up the game im sure (not right away though) but I guess I just dont get the hype or fervor this game is getting from flying some pink jester thing through rings. o_0 (make mine Alexander Keiths! The pride or Canada!)I'm not sure how do you expect me to answer that. This is something that should be encouraged, not the other way around.UpInFlamesEasy now! Some great discussion, and I truly believe Orange Box is one of many titles that deserves Game of the Year (in fact, I would have a tie if it were my choice alone). There is no way to predict how Gamespot might consider a release that includes multiple titles, but I think they would separate out the older titles from the newer ones, and vet them on their own merits, which are many. Portal on its own would be a serious contender for Game of the Year, even its Flash version was awesome. Yeah, enjoy that link, because it's hot.
I know about the writers and for there had to be some overlap within the company to get these games done cause as you said its not that large. I am not saying we should not look at it as one package, in every way I think Orange Box should be praised for what it does, it should be reviewed as one product, but when you start doing awards it gets iffy to me. To me when I talk about game of the year its an award to give to a game, not a productand thats the one time you have to look at Orange box as a compilation.Awards have rules, it should be a level playing field, at least that how I see them. All sites need to make their own rules, but to me it should be one game never a compilation. Product of the year sure, it can win as many of those awards as it wants, but not all those games bunched together to tag team the game of the year awards.dvader654I think there is no question that Orange Box deserves gaming product of the year. Wait, wait, um, Rock Band? Man, gamers really had their hands full this year!
As much as I'd love to see Oblivion win this one, I think it's painfully obvious it's most likely going to be Halo 3.ZanninseiAs stephant_6 stated, I find it hard to believe a 2006 re-release has a shot.

I give you the Geek of the Year award, and penalize you two bars of Latinum, to be deposited in my Ferengi checking account.
What's this? Useful information? Seriously, thanks, this is a great running tally. I might endorse Bioshock myself, but its linear gameplay and easy difficulty kept it out of the running. For me, it was its lack of replayability that put the final nail in its coffin, though I tip my hat to its awesome art direction, amazing storyline, cool weapons, and creepy atmosphere.I'm trying to see something about the GotY's; have there been any others announced? I'm keeping the list updated in the link in my signature.
Edge chose Super Mario Galaxy from what I was told. If there's no link, I'm relying on a pm or response to another thread.
I watched X-Play all season and the awards, and it came down to the wire between BioShock and CoD 4. It was very close.
Who should win? Uncharted: Drake's Fortune. I had a hard time choosing this before TOB, but Uncharted is incredible.
Who will win? Halo 3. IMO Halo3 is undeserving of the GOTY title, but for reasons beyond me, many people love it. Including GS.

Oh, I just assumed that the above quote was correct.
I think my format might be confusing. I put the titles then who gave them GotY. The 2 stood for SMG's 2nd GotY (it has 3 GotY's I know of).
appleater
Oh, I see. Now it makes sense. I think it's the numerals that are confusing. If you just used commas, it might be a bit clearer. Or, I'm stupid/tired/both. That's always a possibility.
I'm putting my money on either Super Mario Galaxy or Orange Box.
Halo has a chance, but I just don't think it's going to happen.
Orange Box is just the greatest value to ever come about in the gaming community in years, and will likely continue to be the best for years to come. Super Mario Galaxy is a pinacle of gaming, it controls perfectly, it looks beautiful, it's amazing fun.
I would be completly satasfied if either of these games won GotY.
Shooter of the Year: (The Orange Box, Halo 3, Bioshock, Crysis, Call of Duty 4)
Who should get it? Crysis. Bar none Crysis is a technical achievement - this is putting aside the I can't play it. Furthermore, it does raise the bar in terms of gameplay, which it has some of the best, if not overall best this year. The ability to go about doing what you want to do, which ever way you want, is something, that although Crysis didn't re-invent, polished to a shine unlike no others. In terms of current gen gaming, Crysis is the ultimate sand box experience that is just fun to play and something should be played by all shooter fans.
Who will get it? Halo 3/Crysis. The other games are great, but these two I think have the best chance of getting. I see Gamespot being loyal to how they reviewed their games, even if 4/5 games were reviewed by a certian someone who isn't amongst us any more. I simply can't see Bioshock winning it because in terms of being FPS, it is the weakest link amongst them. The Orange Box is awesome, but I just don't think that it is fair that it should be put ahead of the rest because of what it has. Call of Duty 4 is a great game, but when you look at it's online ranking system, it doesn't really compare to Halo 3, and it has an incredably short single player. Halo 3 is an epic, and Crysis is a beauty. It's a toss up between the two.
