i been watching all the video game news with the new street fighter x tekken things and stuff like that

and well it got me thinking that well 2D fighters outside of the new KoF are rare, and well 3D fighting games are not too friendly with me since i dont like em

but anyways what are some good console only 2D fighters meaning not to come out for arcade

i do love mark of the wolves for the Dc

Blasphemy! You don't like 2D fighting games O.O!

lol, jk, but you could always play the Blazblue and Guilty Gear games or Arcana Hearts for PS2.

Definitely check out Rival Schools and Rival Schools 2; the latter happens to be for the DC, which is an amazing system by the way. But I know you said you don't like 3D fighters, but maybe give these a try, I doubt they would disappoint. Also, you could check out JoJos Bizarre Adventure, I think it came out for DC as well.

DC I'm not sure about. But the old school MK games and SF games are always fun. Street Fighter II and up.

"Eternal Champions" is not bad (genesis), but really most of the GOOD 2D fighters started in the arcades and were ported to consoles

There is one for Sega CD as well, which is a little better if I recall. Neither was great.

I don't really care if they're Arcarde Ports or not. The ones I like the most are Guilty Gear, Darkstalkers, and Waku Waku 7, those 3 are the ones that, in my opinion, are most fun and have the best designed characters.

What about games with 3D graphics that are on a 2D playing field? Because it seems like games are going back to 2D, which is a good thing. I really enjoyed the recent Mortal Kombat, if you liked the old school games, this is the MK for you.

Most of the good 2D fighters are already well-known:

  • Art of Fighting 1-3
  • Darkstalkers series (pretty much a horror-themed Street Fighter)
  • Eternal Champions (this game gets waaayyyy too much hate, and I seriously don't understand it. It's a solid fighting game with good graphics for the Genesis)
  • Fatal Fury 1-3 (well, Art of Fighting and King of Fighters series are better IMO and similar, but I figured this should at least get a mention for being the first SNK fighting series)
  • King of Fighters series
  • Mortal Kombat 1-3 & Ultimate
  • Mortal Kombat Trilogy
  • Samurai Showdown I-V
  • Street Fighter II games
  • Steet Fighter III
  • Street Fighter: Alpha 1-3
  • Super Street Fighter II

honestly, I can't blame you, 2D fighters from the arcade formed the foundation for the genre , and represented most of the really successful series.

Still Guilty Gear XX Reload or Guilty Gear XX Accent Core for PS2 would be worth getting if you like X on Dreamcast. I'm not really sure what else to add if you don't want arcade ports.

you mean Virtua Fighter? Virtua Fighter was never on the Mega Drive, VF2 was ,but it was vastly different to what it was in the arcade and on the Saturn. nevermind the fact it was an arcade game to begin with :P

VF2 on the Mega Drive is ok but its quite the downgrade compared to the Saturn or arcade versions. its what happens when you try and put a game on a system thats nowhere near as capable enough to run the game

yeah that happened alot with arcade ports in those systems

Vf2 was kinda clunky on the genesis but overall it was enjoyable

i think it was a dissapointment because people got used to it beign 3D

the 32x VF was kinda a dissapointment too

the saturn one looks just great and plays good

its not just the 3D, I can get over that since the gameplay in the other versions isn't 3D as such (it uses polys, but youre still locked on a 2D plane as far as how you can move), it feels choppy compared to the other versions , thats really its issue. porting VF2 to the Mega Drive is odd though , though honestly I dare not think what the result was if they actually tried pushing a 3D version of the game (hardly any polygons, untextured, super low res , 5fps frame rate)

Non-arcade fighters? That's a big handicap. Check out these games:

-Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Tournament Fighters (SNES)

-SNK vs. Capcom: Match of the Millennium (NGPC)

-Bleach: Dark Souls (NDS...not really a legacy device yet, but whatever)

-Valkyrie Profile Fight Tag (PC...not sure about the availability of this game anymore, but I have a copy burned onto a disc)

In addition to Valkyrie Profile FT, there are various doujin fighting games you can play. I remember one that was based on Les Miserables. Yes, really.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Tournament Fighters (SNES)King9999

Ah, yes forgot about that one. It's also on the Genesis but it's a different(though similar) but the SNES was much better imo. Dragon Ball Z Budokai 3 is also a good one, it has 3D graphics put plays on a 2D plane.

-SNK vs. Capcom: Match of the Millennium (NGPC)

King9999

Probably the best fighter on NGPC, which is saying something. I am surprised at the depth of the gameplay considering there is only two buttons.
