I spent last month playing mgsv with its smooth 60fps and then moved on to playing sfv. Today I went back to playing Witcher 3 and it feels so laggy for some reason. I never had this problem when I first played it but after playing games in 60fps I can see how big of a difference it really is. I even feel like my response is laggy when playing 30fps. Is this normal? I wonder if this is how pc players feel when they play on console.

Yea, I'm a bit bummed I played TLoU on the PS3 first. That game had serious framerate issues. The PS4 was heavenly in comparison. You should try Witcher 3 on PC, you'll get 60 there.

Not really , for me there is no difference in going from 30 to 60 or from 60 to 30,.

But then again i am also not one that is a huge nitpick about those things, i play games to play games.

@Jacanuk: You really can't see the difference? And I'm not nitpicking, but the difference really threw me off. After spending an hour or two though, my eyes adjusted to the lower fps once more.

I don't believe people who claim that they don't see a difference. Maybe the difference doesn't bother them, that's a different story but still it is there as evident as daylight! I spent years playing games without 60 fps before I got a gaming PC. As a matter of fact, even 20 fps wouldn't have bothered me a lot before. Now with the new spoiled attitude, I feel like there is an annoying slowness about the game if the fps is locked to 30.

I've always wondered how much difference there is between 30fps and 60fps.

When it at first was 30fps, I thought it looked okay. Then I switched to 60fps and I was surprised by how much... better it was. Then I switched back to 30fps and saw how choppy it was. I wouldn't have noticed if I hadn't seen 60fps. 60fps is much much more preferable. Now gaming at 120hz and 120fps is another story.

It depends on what kind of game you're playing. Sometimes 30fps is just fine, but still, you cannot deny that a solid 60fps is more playable no matter what, 60fps is optional for me. I like things to look smooth as they run. It works like this: No one cares about framerates until they get a decent PC--and then they realize what they've been missing all those years and once you've gone 60fps, there's just no going back. Gaming in 1440p/60fps is very important to me and I invest a lot of money towards my PC to obtain it. But however, I still game on consoles since I have lots of friends on PSN/XBL and this maybe a surprise but I don't game that much on PC and my PC is there when I need it and it depends on the game of course.

Edit: I just want to point out that stable framerates has always been very important to me and framerates over resolution, I'll gladly take 900p/60fps any day of the week.

depends on the game and genre, while I would not call 30 fps (if a stabile 30) laggy, I would however call it sluggish, it feels like you are fighting the controls all the time.

60 looks better, way more fluid, no doubt about it, but it is how it handles that is key, frankly 30 fps is frustrating. and sub 30 is just borderline pointless.

But some genres really see no benefits or penalties of higher fps, most RPGs would not cause too many issues, and most horror games are fairly slow paced, and thus would not really hurt the experience much either. Most sim type games would not be an issue.

Any game with real movement, pace or precision required would and should be in 60 fps or above.

I would gladly pick lower graphics settings but higher fps in all fps, driving, some RPGs, platformers and such. I wish they would atleast give that option on console, as more of a standard :\

It's nice to have 60+ fps. But, I'm fine with 30 fps as well so long as the mouse doesn't feel the "weight" of the game. The Witcher 3 at 30 fps feels heavy compared to Crysis or Warhead at the same framerate. Hell, Crysis is one of the few games that feels playable at 25 fps. On the opposite end, ES: Oblivion felt even heavier and its framerates were in the upper 40's.

I take it on a game by game basis. If I can get the crosshairs or pipper on the target without feeling the lag, I have no complaints with 30 fps. The majority of the games, I have no problems with at 30 fps.

As long as its consistent, 30fps doesn't bother me. Though I've been playing almost entirely on consoles up to this point (recently built a PC but haven't really dug into it yet) so that's just my perspective. I will say that Skyrim on the PS3, for example, requires an eye adjustment after playing games with better or more consistent fps.

even 60 fps feels laggy. Its why 120hz or more is the new standard. Any game below 60 fps is really painful to play unless its a game without much movement or action.

Even a game like Civ 5 where its just a turn based game is hard on the eyes when moving around the world and the fps drop below 60.

60+fps is the way to play. 30fps is garbage. It is like going from HDTV back to SDTV, or broadband back to dialup, you just don't do it.

Unless you spend hours every day in front of the computer, most people will not notice any difference from 30 to 60 or reverse. And even then it may seem a bit smoother but unless you play competitive FPS´s , gaming in 30/60 should not matter.

And to me while 60 seems smoother, it does not bother me if it´s 30 or 60, as i mentioned i play games to play games.

We all play games to play games. That is why it so annoying to have the frame rate break the immersion. Myself and many others are easily distracted by 30fps and it ruins the experience.

maybe don't overstate it so much and you won't get as much argument. Yeah, it's a difference, but it's not THAT different.

anyway, if my game is running a stable 60fps, that's my cue to look for some graphical/enb setting i can turn up, or maybe install a graphics intensive mod i've been avoiding. It's nice, but I only need the steadiness, not the number, not when we're talking that high. I'll sacrifice some fps for the best lighting, texture sizes and such that i can get. After all, you can run NES games at 60fps but they'll still look like shit.

30fps vs 60fps makes a whole lot of difference. It's like having sex with and without a condom, that's the difference. [I know my last statement was kinky but you catch my drift when I mean by condom vs none condom]

As I said above, once you go 60fps, you ain't never wanna go back to 30fps.

One thing i've noticed is that its harder to tell the difference in frame rate when using a controller vs. a keyboard and mouse. I can still easily tell when a game is running at 30fps when using a controller but it doesn't bother me as much - I'd prefer to be playing in 60 but I can live with 30 if its a console exclusive and I have no other choice.

For kb+m, I think the more direct control you get with a mouse in first or third person games makes the difference more noticeable. Playing a first or third person game with a mouse in 30fps feels awful to me.

People who say they can't tell the difference are crazy though. I find it incredibly apparent and difficult to ignore.

Gaming at 30Fps breaks the immersion? Where do you guys come up with such nonsense? I guess you game with an FPS counter on the corner of the screen and the moment the framerate drops below 60FPS BAM! Immersion broken.

I don't see how it is nonsense when it is true. Everybody is different and is affected by things differently. We have different standards too. I can spot a bad frame rate instantly. I wish that it didn't bother me, but it does. I don't usually play with the fps counter either. I only toggle it when I see drop in performance and I want to see where it is at or when I am adjusting settings. I prefer a minimal HUD for immersion.

@Jacanuk: you don't have to spend hours every day in front of the computer. I play on ps4 btw so in this case its a tv. But I've been playing mgsv for the past month which runs at 60 fps on my ps4 so getting used to that and suddenly switching to witcher 3 made me realise the difference. We all play games to play games lol and seeing the difference does not mean someone spends way too much time gaming or that they play way too seriously for their own good. I mean look at the amount of posts I have on gs and compare that to yours. I'm not trying to draw a conclusion from that but saying that you have to spend hours in front of a computer to see the difference is a ridiculous claim.

It's not hard to switch between higher and lower framerates when you play the same game on both a mid-range PC and a lower spec laptop. See my sig. ;-) 1080p @ 60 fps and 768p @ 30 fps. When my main goal is simply to play the game, I'm fine with either specs.

Here is something that some folks are missing. Your brain has this amazing ability to adapt regardless of the FPS. I know its shocking that a normal brain can accomplish such an amazing feat. So, at the end of the day while you can tell the difference between framerates it does prevent that nifty brain feature that normalizes the experience. Unless you purposely try to prevent such an automatic response from happening.

I am the same way, and it gets worse after you get used to 80+ fps. While playing a Halo game a bit ago multiple explosions on-screen turned the game into a slide-show. Even games that can maintain 30 or 60 fps feel laggy and off to me.

you seem to be disproportionately upset about this. pretty common for a high end pc gamer to notice the difference between high and low framerates. if someone can't get used to lower framerates that's their problem, why are you so offended by it?

Offended? Nope. I think the overall attitude about FPS from select "PC gamers" obnoxious.
