I heard of a way to ride your own bicycle on a indoor trainer that frees your hands up and you can play games. I like racing games and thought that it would be cool way to loose a few pounds while racing. Has anyone done this ? Can you do both at the same time ?

Put your drinks across the room so when you get thirsty you have to get up and get it lol. It would be cool to get one of those generators that is bycicle powered and hook up your game consoles to it so you have to sit there and pedal or else the power cuts out. A bycicle seat thingy would be cool but I'd rather use a treadmill or eliptical runner while gaming. Have you see that adam sandler movie... 20 first dates or something like that??? with drew berrymore. Drew's character's brother only excersizes his one arm for some reason(i forget). One arm is small and puny and the other is ripped.

I would think thats what would happen if you did the bycicle seat thing lol. Your legs would be ripped and then the rest of you would be all puny. whereas walking/running would bring more muscles into play. Strap weights to your wrist and your arms will get a work out to just from holding the controller up.

It sucks how much exercise equipment costs =/

Short answer: No Working out is usually a completely different activity than playing video games.

Well, you wouldn't really get ripped in the legs, as you'd be doing aerobic workouts, which develops cardio as well as long/lean muscles instead of ripped muscles (which stems from anaerobic exercise, like doing heavy lifting), but if you were bike pedaling consistently with good effort for an hour, you'd get a good workout while being able to play games.

The generator idea is a cool one, but the problem is not only the cost of equipment, but also the fact that you can't really generate enough power to keep the system powered, given how much energy those types of generators actually create. Also, the power-cycling (no pun intended) that could occur with the powering up and powering down of the gear through the pedaling of the bike would be horrible for the longevity of the system as well.

If you were serious about doing exercise while gaming, you can either get games that are more focused on getting activity in while playing (DDR/Pump it up, WiiFit, or other such applications), or do something like get an inexpensive exercise bike with resistance , and merely play games while pedaling on that. However, be warned that doing the same exercise every day will ultimately cause a plateu effect where the benefits of the exercise aren't that great anymore, and your body doesn't respond as well to it, hence why diversification is a huge part of a good exercise program.

Funny ! I like the thoughts. This has got me wondering. So I tried it and I got a real good sweat. Way better than Wii fit. Done that and found it to be boring and not really like "real" exercise. Was playing Moto GP and it felt like I was in the game. Everytime I got close to someone I found myself pedaling faster. Went for like 20 minutes but had to stop because could not seat up on seat without something to lean on. Anyone here into racing games ? if so give it a try. See if you can do it. I am not real good a shooting games but I wonder if you pedal faster when you get into the action ? On being careful not to do too much, I would think you would have to do quite a bit to have that problem. I know that cycle riders do like 3-4 hrs a day.

I've always wanted to try that, but I'd rather just use a stationary bike. The seat on my bike isn't exactly built for comfort and without my hands on the handlebars to take some of the weight off my crotch, it would be mighty sore in record time. Like the racing game idea, though. I recall some company making an adapter for a stationary bike that treated the pedaling speed like an analog trigger, but I'm not sure how (or if) it handled steering. Having to pedal like mad to get your car going would be amusing, although depending on the track the workout might be pretty uneven.

I guess it was the flat wide seat, itchy. With a regular bike would need something stable to rest arms on. Really can not hold yourself up for long. Stationary bikes are expensive. I got a trainer for my bike for ~$100. Works great. But boring. I want to try the weights on my arms idea. Crazy but a good one. Might work. How could you do that ?

On mtv's The realworld one season they had a green theme and they had a bike powered PC so its not that impossable. How might you do wrist weights? They sell them or you could just take gallon jugs of water and put a rope through the handle and then tie a knot in the end and just slip it over your arms, preferrably with towels or washclothes under the rope to keep it from digging into your arms. Or you could take cans of soup and make handles out of duct tape and then use the rope over your arms method.

My favorite is either the 12 oz curl or the 16 oz curl depending on my beverage that night. Also exercising my mouth with constant trash talking seems to pump me up.

Yeah I used to be like that. Then I saw a close gaming buddy of mine die of a heart attack. Now I am trying to get motivated to exercise. The worse part is that he really suffered in the hospital for a long time. Buzz kill , I know.

The thing I do is that I force myself to do a certain amount of pushups and situps for dying, losing or something in games. Works well :)

That's sad man. I was sorta of joking. I do like to drink and talk trash but I also like to exercise. To me gaming and exercise are at complete opposite ends of the exercise spectrum. Gaming is what I do after I exercise and look to wind down or waste a few hours when not being active.

As far as Wii goes... it's not just Wii Fit that offers physical activity. Wii Sports (boxing), WarioWare, and probably some other sports games can get your heart beating pretty fast.

No, but it would be difficult still, as explained here. The physical demand to generate the horsepowers/watts needed to power the equipment would be rather significant, and furthermore, being able to sustain that amount of force for an extended time will be hard for someone who's out of shape. Lastlyl, if you slow down at any point, you run the risk of shutting down your hardware abruptly, which is never good.

Exactly! Why try to take shortcuts? If you want to lose a few pounds, take an hour a day, go outside and run. Do push ups and sit ups. Go for a brisk walk. You'd be surprised what it'll do for you.

That is what I am saying. Is that it is not a short cut. I get more exercise while playing the game then I do when not playing. I am at it now 3 days in a row. Getting great workouts and gaming is more fun. Feels like I am really racing. You can not consider it a short cut. I hope some one here tries it. Just use any indoor bike, and put in (racing game) Moto GP or Mx vs ATV. It is really intense. I am already good at these so no learning curve. Legs start spinning and I forget I am even pedalling. Someone else has got to do this with a 1st shooter. I would like to know what happens. I get that curled lip and sweat in the eyes thing going. Much more virtual then ever before. Come on who's got a bike ?

Roleplay In FPShooters, run when your guy runs; walk when he walks; when you strafe, strafe yourself; when he ducks or jumps, do the same; when you die, use that 10-20 seconds to perform some good pushups. Wii Sports is the easiest game to remain active because playing tennis, baseball, or boxing you can literally wear yourself out exhausting your movements. Someone before mentioned DDR and I'd agree- this is THE best game to work a sweat over, and get frustrated to the point you try harder, thus workout more. Or a very simple routine- plug in a Playstation or Playstation 2 and you have a good 5 minutes to perform pushups, situps, jump n jacks, etc during the load screens.

This might be lame and quite boring but for what I'm about to suggest, quite helpful.

I'm involved deeply in karate, and my sensei keeps reinforcing that stance is the most important thing you can work on. So in that case I stand in front or back stance or something for a while while just standing there playing my RPGs. That strengthens the core muscles by being in a stressed position.

If you want something more active, try Wii Fit I guess.

The karate stance would be a good idea. That will give you a great burn, and build strength. Cycling while playing video game is very addictive. But holding a stance would get maximum burn. I will try that also. Maybe see if can hold for full race ? Like 6 min, ouch !

I suggest DDR, it's a game that really does get you moving an does exercise you. The other obvious choice is...Wii fit. :p Any game that focuses on activity will do you good.

Things are different for every gamer but it is highly possible to be able to exercise and game at the same time. I personally love gaming as much as fitness so both would be a 'chilling out' or a 'relaxation' outlet. Any exercise machine that doesn't require the use of your hands can have a sort of table top placed in front of it. Treadmills are the best for this, gazelles work just fine as long as the table set up you have for your laptop/keyboard mouse fit comfortably around the controls. A simpler (and cheaper) method would to get a large exercise ball. To balance and sit on one of those puts your muscles into use...not to mention bouncing is fun as hell if you're doing things like running from spot to spot, grinding or gathering on a game....or getting a TON of killing sprees. I use mine not only for gaming but watching tv and movies. It's easy and pretty comfortable once you get use to it.

heres how to do it while gaming --> MId game --> Pause it --> go outside --> Run --> come back after 1 hour --> Unpause --> If playing an FPS: repeat after 2 reloads. If playing an RPG: Repeat after 2 Battles or 1 boss battle. If playing any other game: Turn it off Repeat. Remember to hydrate!

Or you go to the gym for 45 mins to an hour 3-4 days a week and then play video games after your done.

My schedule for example:

6:00PM Eat super
7:30PM Go to gym.
8:30PM Come home play video games & eat more.
11:00 Sleep.

My diet however is pretty healthy, I only drink water (except after i'm done at gym I have a glass of chocolate milk.) and I eat pretty much only fresh food/vegetables.I try to avoid anything that has non natural ingredients in it.

Video games make for great thumb excercise.

Ok yeah, that wasn't a serious answer. I can't think of a way to do a proper intense excercise while playing games unless you're playing Wii fit. You could probably do some good stretches though.

Was it really necessary to revive this ancient thread? I think not.
