You all know how addicting achievements can be. I, however, think it's a shoddy system lacking imagination. It could be so much better in every single way.

What do you all think? I'd rather have achievements and trophies that actually meant something.

I agree and disagree. Half of the complaint there was that they're hard to get and give you nothing, so gamers are wasting their time. But they are choosing to do this, right? It's not like you can't pop in the next game until you unlock X number of achievements/trophies. However, once I saw PS3's trophy system with having levels, I think Sony missed a brilliant opportunity. Instead of wasting their time with Home, which is an absolute trainwreck of stupidity (yay! 3D chatroom with microtransactions and waiting in line to play games!), they could've made it a simple RPG that's tied to your trophy level. Your level determines what kind of items you have access to and character level. You could battle your friends in some kind of simplistic system or do other things to earn in-game cash. It wouldn't even have to be 3D-it could be either all or all sans battles a simple 2D interface. As a way to generate revenue, perhaps users could purchase levels or special items/clothes with cash (with having their trophy level be in addition to any purchased levels). I don't have the idea fully fleshed out in my head, since I'm not a Sony employee, but it would've been a neat little persistent minigame that would've been compelling but not replacing gamers' desire to purchase more games, as in you wouldn't forgo purchasing new games just to play this thing.

In response to his repeated statements that you get nothing from achievements, I ask, "What do you get from gaming in general?" You get entertainment. Well, if people are being entertained by achievements, then they're accomplishing exactly what a hobby is supposed to accomplish. It's downright silly the way he talks about Halo's unlockable armor as if it's a real, tangible thing. It's not; it's just to show off, which is exactly what he criticizes Gamerscore for doing.

He also says that achievements should give you stuff in the game. Well, sure, why not. This isn't a new idea, though it would be nice if more games did this.

What do I get by unlocking trophies? An excuse to keep playing. This is especially useful for games that don't have MP.

I've personally found the acheivements add longevity to the games I play, which is always a good thing. Of course some games implement them badly, others you could argue do it on purpose to increase desire to buy a game you'd otherwise not touch (Avatar) There's definately room for improvement and over time the game devs will sort it out, but aside from the minor issues the idea as a whole is a good one IMO

Achievements are only poorly implemented if the developer implements them that way. For example, getting an achievement for something that would have occurred naturally or eventually is something that's poorly thought out. IMO, achievements should be awarded only for things that you'd have to go out of your way to achieve. I don't think acheivements need to serve any other purpose than for bragging rights or entertainment, but I wouldn't complain if I could trade in my points for something tangible.

Most developers prefer not having the achievements but are required to implement the system by Microsoft. Not only that, they're required to have these achievement goals added during the course of development which hampers a lot of various other projects they're currently working on so the lack of creativity may be a factor due to the lack of effort or time.

I'm sorry. I hadn't considered all of this. I'll go fix the implementation right now.

Oh man how I love achievements. I think it was a stroke of genius by Microsoft. Anyway I think they are implemented just fine myself. I really like the ones that unlock a cool gamerpic.

you get trophies for playing a game that you would already be playing, so i like them, i actually get alittle more gameplay trying to get alittle more trophies out of the game.

Honestly I don't care for achievements. What I do like is when there is an achievement that makes for some interesting gameplay or makes you do something you wouldn't have thought about normally. But if I ever made a game I would give 1000 points for pressing start on the main menu just to piss everyone off.
