Im almost finished with my first run with Catherine and Im Loving in. It could very well be my GOTY.

not only it has great story but also has great and rewarding gameplay, i go as far as say it more rewarding than Demon's Soul IMO.

Beacause, unlike Demon's soul there is no grinding or better equipments, the only thing in this game matters is your skill.

Is anybody else feel the same way?

And if u dont like this game give a reason, and no "this is just anime Porn" in not a reason.

If anyone lists that reason, then they haven't played enough of the game. There's really no porn in it. I will be openly honest and say that I'm a bit disappointed in the fact that there isn't nudity, because the mature story matter actually calls for it. However, I didn't buy it for that reason at all. I purchased it because it's such an oddball game. I beat and reviewed it the other day, giving it an 8.5, but my only real complaint is that the controls take too much getting used to. Yes, the game relies on your skill, but the way the controls work, you can very easily screw yourself up if you don't tap the buttons just right. Plus, there were some major moments of frustration when blocks kept changing themselves up on me. I don't like it when chaos puts its foot in the door and makes me rely on luck.

Yeah agree the controls will take time to get used to specialy harder mode when there no rewind option. And yes it has its frustrating moments but there is no game with out frustration. We would lose couple times in a level then get frustrated then stop and relaxe then come back and beat the level. To me u cant have rewarding feeling with out the frustration of beating the level or a boss, it was same with Demon's Soul, Ninja Gaiden and this game.

Im glad u give your honest opinion with out bahing the game. Im suprised that most people still think this game is some kind of hentai game even tho game like Mass Effect and Wicher 2 has more sex than this game. Heck! even God of War has more sex than this game.

Really, kinda sad how Vincent has so much stress over a sexual relationship in which he barely is awake. Great game though momentarely I'm not motivated to finish it. The puzzle I'm stuck at right now is just to hard for me so I take a recreational break, playing other stuff. I just hope my motivation returns soon. This game is to good to become one of the many unfinished ones in my collection.

I was also stuck in some of the stages, specialy on 5th one, but the story is so good that it gets me motivated to finish the game. But u could always use youtube if the the stage is to hard. The last game i was this exited for the story was Persona 4. I just hope they add some elements that made Catherine so good on Persona 5.

I just played the demo for the first time and thought it was great. I would definitely buy it, but sadly, I have no cash.

I only played the demo. Does the full game keep using the same kind of block climbing puzzle? If so, that would seem to become a repetitive headache.

Absolutely loved it.

When i first heard about Catherine, i was intruiged. I have a bunch of SMT games in my collection, so i was interested in seeing what Atlas could do outside the RPG genre. I'm very pleased with the result.

Really? I thought the game play was very new and unique for a puzzle game. It was an is a great challenge with an excellent story. Did you simply not enjoy the puzzle part of it?

"got bored on the 4th night and sent it back to gamefly."

Hooray for you. Enjoy missing out on perhaps the greatest plot twists this year. (I'd include last year in that statement as well, but Nier's plot twists were outright jaw-dropping.)

Starshine_M2A2

It won't. You'll have to bite the bullet and get a console one of these days, borrow one from a friend, or wait years and years for console exclusives to be "playable on PC," if you know what I mean.

I didn't like it. Its a terrible game with the only shining feature being the story.

JangoWuzHere

Then you must not like puzzle games or social/dating sims, since it offers a great take on block-climbing puzzle games and arguably the best social/dating sim of both the 6th and 7th gens. (Yeah, better social sim aspects than Persona 3 and 4. I went there.) Wonderful atmosphere as well, IMO.

I only played the demo. Does the full game keep using the same kind of block climbing puzzle? If so, that would seem to become a repetitive headache.

Qixote

As the stages go on, you keep getting new types of blocks, stage themes, and enemies to deal with. Bomb blocks, trampolines, black holes of death, ice blocks... The tactics you must use later on to ascend the towers are incredibly deep, and require the player to think outside the box. Definitely not a game for the Cawwa Doody fanboys out there.

All in all, while my GOTY for this year goes to Portal 2, I'd easily give it to Catherine in terms of console-exclusive games... unless Dark Souls shows it up or is at least on-par with it. (completely and utterly subjective, as it's an entirely different type of game)

^ Doubt he cares about a plot twist if he lost interest in the game.

But I played the demo and really enjoyed the story; however, I'm not one to enjoy doing puzzles repeatedly.

It's still amusing to me because the twists and turns of Catherine's plot are jaw-dropping. It's just a real shame, but a laughable one, sort of like the people who ragequit Nier during the first few hours before the excellence of the story began to unfold. Their own loss, really. Much like Demon's Souls, Catherine stands as testament to the fact that most gamers can't appreciate a well-crafted challenge anymore. And, again, the puzzles get more and more complex as the game goes on. Want a mild spoiler? Okay then.
During the final battle, blocks are changing into other types of blocks constantly. Everywhere.
How, when it all came full-circle and made sense? (within the otherworldly bounds of a Persona-like universe, anyway) Personally, I was up til 7AM watching that hour-long cutscene before the 8th night. It was like seeing the plot twist from Fight Club all over again.

It's your opinion that Catherine is bad. Frustrating? Yes. Hard but fair? Yes. And it is indeed a social sim of sorts, with an emphasis on dating and relationships. With multiple outcomes based on your answers for the two girls involved, it is the very epitome of a dating sim, or at least the non-puzzle portions of the game are.

@pills4louis, as much as i agree with u, there is no need to jump on people who didnt enjoy it, maybe it not there cup of tea. Thats why i made this thread to see what other people's opinion about the game.

I finaly finished the game and starting my second playthrough. To me the gamepay is so addicting that i havent play any other of my games.

With this game, Persona team have my complete trust, I'll be looking forward for there next game.

I didn't find Catherine fair. I really thought there was a lot of bad design choices with the boss fights, the controls, and the camera. All these things really make the game far more frustrating then it should be.

I just ebayed my copy for $50. So I was only out $10 for playing it. I had high hopes with the game, which is why I bought it in the first place but it let me down in too many ways. I played all the way through it and got the True Catherine ending and I have to say I laughed in a couple of spots, BUT for the most part the story didn't work with the ending I got.
The whole time I (Vincent) moped around thinking of getting back together with Katherine when really I was a jerk to her the WHOLE time. It was like they didn't even try to have you side with Catherine at all until the very last set of levels with the questions
The block puzzle was great IMO. There is an easy mode that lets you back up steps over and over if you like. My problem with it was once you died though it took forever to fall, see the gameover screen and then hit the retry. A quick skip / retry button could have saved a lot of frustration with that part. As for the content, the story was ok. I enjoyed it despite my mention of all the dialog and cutscenes not matching up. Both K/Catherine's fit in well with the whole story. I did get tired of the whole game f* bombing for little to no reason. Which is ironic that they edited the F* bomb from the intro song "YO" but then didn't give you the option to edit it throughout the game play. The boss fights were the most annoying part of the game. It didn't matter how quickly you climbed usually, it would be if you got stuck in a certain section for too long you would just get killed. I'm fine with difficulty, but they just felt cheap to me. I will admit I enjoyed one boss fight as I dodged gun shots... but still for the most part I would dread the last level in each stage. If you haven't felt the need to play this game yet, it is a clear and definite pass. For those that don't like it, just move on - there isn't much more than the same. So if you want to see the story unfold, crank it down to easy or 'very easy' and just finish it out and get rid of it before the trade / resell value bottoms out.

It's a puzzle game. Take it or leave it. The story is anything but lame, you have to watch it unfold. It starts to screw with your head by the 5th or 6th night, and comes to an awesome, fulfilling climax. If you really want to play the "gameplay is the same again and again" card... the same can be said of every game.

good to know the story gets better. I love puzzle games, but this somehow annoys me, probably because I don't like it if random stuff happens, especially on bos fights. The first was annoying as hell, the boss changed the boxes a way that I had no chance to go up and I HAD to die. That's a joke, I hate it if games get cheap :S If I need to solve a puzzle, make it without time limit. If you want to have a time limit, make it simple as bejeweled :S Thant's actually the reason why I played Rapunzel since my post: there I can solve puzzles without falling blocks. I would have LOVED Rapunzel as Mini / PSN game and Catherine as a DVD / BR

This. Hell, the later stages are even blatantly described as having no one true path to the top. Quite a bit of room for improv in those, especially the ones with two or three separate towers.

Wow, It's really incredibly sad to see people bashing this game so much. I am incredibly thankful that atlus brought this over, I haven't enjoyed a game this much in a long time. Why would you have it stay in Japan, so other people and I can't enjoy it?

The only thing I've found difficult about the game is Babel.

Other than that, I'm pretty much done with it after one more ending. Was fun but short. Especially after 100 hour long Persona's.
No.. I've already finished it on easy with no help. I'm trying it on hard now, which is pretty impossible with out a little help from videos once in a while. If this game bores you, you must have an incredibly low attention span. This and Portal 2 are probably my personal games of the year so far. pills4louis

Do you really need to result to insults to try and prove your point? Low attention span...give me a break.

Can't deny that he's right, though. Just need to stay level-headed and you come out on top.

it didnt bore me though i played on normal and i found the part where spoilers - - - - - where you have to escort katherine to be the most stupid idea ever implemented in a video game to date.. and of course its because i was bored and of course you think you have the audacity to be able to slander me when you played it on easy which is a cakewalk compared to the other difficulties to the point where the game is either to hard and annoying as all **** or its so easy theres almost no point in playing the damn thing.

Actually... it's already been unanimously agreed upon that even Catherine's easy mode is no walk in the park.

You obviously haven't played it. The story is mind-blowing.

I definitely agree with your point about the cutscenes/Vincent not acting like the way you're directing him to be. In my playthrough, I was being a jerk to Catherine and catering to Katherine, but in the cutscenes, Vincent would be indecisive. He didn't know what to do, so he would just say "umm...uhh..." instead of saying something positive towards Katherine or do something that Katherine would appreciate. He even agreed to a date with Catherine. The hell? It's a shame to hear he acts that way as well when you're steering Vincent towards Catherine.

There are other stuff I didn't like, but I enjoyed the game overall. The presentation, including the story, visuals and soundtrack, was pretty good, and I found the gameplay fun for the most part; it also felt satisfying at times. However, I don't see myself replaying this game anytime soon.

The escort thing was pretty dumb, especially after you save her she *spoilers* still dumps you. But, it wasn't impossible, you just had to move at the same pace the whole time which is pretty annoying though....

I had a similar discussion with a friend of mine. She argued that even if you steered Vincent towards Catherine, it wouldn't exactly be realistic, so to speak, for him to drop his girlfriend of several years (as is implied) after a one night stand. Over the course of the game, if you consistently push for Catherine, you'll notice his inner thoughts begin to lean on her more, and doubt Katherine's intentions and their future together. This all comes to a head in the final scenes of the game, when he finally makes his ultimate decision.

I think Atlus handled the story rather well. I don't know about you, but I sure couldn't just drop my girlfriend after meeting (and sleeping with) a hotter woman. That sort of a decision would take some deep thought and a bit of time to see through to the end.

This doesn't work if you completely drop Catherine though as Vincent drags it out again. I think Altus just got lazy and made the cutscenes differ for only the last Stage and the decisions you make there. They could have made it much bigger and better branching. But like one person pointed out, it was a budget game - can't expect too much. And to reply to your friend - But Katherine wasn't "My" girlfriend of 5 years. She was Vincent's - with no back story or direction early on in the game other than Katherine basically straight out being a jerk from scene one I had an extremely hard time relating to the story. I followed it, and enjoyed it for what it was, but they tried to make it a 'choice' game where they didn't even put any actual lasting choices in it until the last stage. The stages leading up to that were nothing more than fluff to push your bar around on the pink / blue scale.

You do have a point there. Perhaps the choices throughout could've been removed altogether with only the big ones near the end left, since from the start of the story you're told you are watching Vincent's story play out. Still, budget game and all, it turned out amazingly well.

I didn't like it. Its a terrible game with the only shining feature being the story.

Mortos13

And in what ways makes it terrible? Because its too hard?

if its too hard for most people that takes the fun out of it. i didn't beat the game but i could see it becoming so frustrating that its not fun anymore. i personally didn't think it was too hard. i just thought it was just boring. then again thats just probably because i think all anime is boring so im a little biased lol.
