Anyone enjoy playing single player games cooperatively with friends?

By this I mean having a friend over and you work together on a game even when it's single player and only one of you is using a controller at one time. For games that don't rely on pure skill and/or reflex, the kind that has more of an emphasis on problem solving, I find this to be almost preferable. Leads to better problem solving, lets you think outloud, and just gives you an opportunity to be social and spend time with friends.

I was playing Limbo with a friend last night and realised how much more I was enjoying it than if I was just sitting alone with the game. You know, switching back in forth with the controller, saying "oh try going up there first!". Back in the day another friend and I played through Ocarina of Time together, and we would rotate the controller between overworld, temple and boss segments. Great fun.

Anyone else feel this way?

I prefer my single player experiences to be experienced solo, at least the first time around, but if I replay an older game like Donkey Kong Country on snesthen I don't mind playing with a friend, changing players each time one of us dies.

I don't really like how so many new games are putting more emphasis on playing co-op though. I prefer to single player games alone, solving puzzles on my own etc.

I do this with a friend a lot with horror games, we did it with Silent Hill 2, Project Zero 1 and 2, Amnesia, Resident Evil 1, 2 and 3, possibly more. :)

Verry rarely nowadays, but I used to back in the day. this was more due to the lack of multiplayer games that me and my friends really enjoyed. we would play a single player game together like zelda, and just take turns playing.

Did that couple times this gen with Uncharted 2, GTAIV, and Skyrim but I don't often do that. This of course after only if I completed the game already.

Try to drive around a city like GTA3 with driver blindfold and someone else try to tell them how to drive.

I did this on Mario RPG on the SNES. Two friends and I, we each picked a character we liked and played as it when it was its turn. We turned it into a 3 player co-op experience. Pretty fun.

I have in the past, but I mostly play alone now. If my brother ever gets in the mood to play some co-op then I definitely will.

For me it depends on the game, a lot of the time I just want to move on and do things quickly

I used to enjoy doing this with games like the Tony Hawk's Pro Skater (Underground/Project 8 included) and Coolboarders, Dave Mirra, Matt Hoffman, Aggressive Inline, Grind Session type of games. It was just fun taking turns trying to collect S-K-A-T-E or trying to hit all the grind spots or get all the high scores and such. Games like Portal 1 and 2 could be good for this as well.

Last year we completed the story mode of Mortal Kombat together with my GF and it was fun, but most of the time I prefer playing single player games alone.

Hell yeah, that's how we used to play back in the day before this Internutz came along and connected everyone. Unfortunately, for a lot of people, the more "connected" they became the more disconnected they became with actually socializing face-to-face with people. All games have a co-op aspect in them provided you have a friend. My best-friend and I still play games like this today. We swap the controller every now and then to give each other a turn. This is a much better way to play single-player games because we'll each pick up on stuff that we might not have noticed playing on our own.

If its a singleplayer game, then no I don't like to share. In my experience, my friends would always play the game for hours and I'd miss out on a lot of story (Who can just sit and watch a game if they aren't playing?).

If I do, it'll be on a second playthrough. I can't take a game seriously with my friends around; I like to experience SP solo first.

But it's nice that some games let you play through the whole campaign with co-op, like GRFS.

I used to love doing this, I have tried again recently with my husband, we were playing Arkham Asylum, but I have realised that I get super impatient with him because he just isn't a gamer, so he makes silly decisions and his camera control drives me insane  Co-op is one of my favs, I love a good co-op game, but I think I need to play with someone who also plays regularly otherwise I get mad.

I think it works best with games that only have a limited amounts of mechanics works best. I think this is why I'm currently enjoying Limbo (or most any side-scrolling game), Walking Dead, and Portal 2 with friends, there's just not much to tinker around with besides simply moving your character around using action buttons. And they are all based on decision making rather than skill.

@_BlueDuck_: the only game i played with my other 2 friends Resident Evil 4
the reason: all of us were pussies in playing horror games and it took joint effort to complete it in a week whenever one dies the other player gets to play but sometimes when the boss stages comes no one wants to take the controller :p truthfully it was fun back in PS2 era but now all are grown ups and everyone has the
ir own console :\

I do it all the time with my cousins. We finished episodes from liberty city together this. Went half through Bio shock infinite. Finished mafia 2 etc. I actually enjoy watching other people play more than playing myself

I've actually done this quite a bit. Back in the PS1 days, my best friend would always come over for Resident Evil playthroughs. He liked watching the game since it had such a strange cinematic flair, and he'd often chime in on the puzzles.

We worked through Dino Crisis in similar fashion.

And we've always played GTA and Saints Row games in this fashion as well. He's always had a knack for finding the hidden stuff in those kinds of games and I've always been better at the actual gun play. And he's technically better at driving since I tend to just plow through so any time precision driving was required, he'd drive and when getting there fast at all costs was necessitated, I'd take the "wheel".

I like playing older games like that. An old friend of mine would come over every Saturday night and we'd have a couple of beers and work through a file on LTTP, tons of fun. My girlfriend and I sometimes trade off on Wind Waker (she's does the exploring parts, I do the fighting and dungeons).

The only time I don't do it is when it's a game I haven't beaten yet.
