IDK why it pisses me off so much, but this is the 2nd christmas in a row where I got the game I asked for, but it was used.

Actually, I know why it pisses me off. It's because when I get a game I treat it right. I keep everything in excellent to mint condition. I have a gaming library that I'm very proud of and when I get agame that looks like it it was drowned in a swimming pool then thrown off the back of a moving truck I'm not happy.

It's even more annoying when it's a cheap one that I ask for. I asked for FF3 (It's under $30 brand new) and she gets me a used copy. Now I got to go trade it in (i'll probably get like $5 for it, so I can buya real copy. From now on I'm asking for gift certificates.

Well, I don't know who "she" is, or what "her" financial status is, so i can't actually comment on your specific situation. We all hate when somebody is blatantly cheap. However, I'd like to give the benefit of the doubt and assume that the person's finances are running thin. If getting a used game bothers you that much, then stop asking for games, and buy them yourself like a big boy.

I think you should be grateful that somebody even cares enough about you to buy you a gift. I don't care what I get, I always appreciate the gifts people give to me, it shows they care and it makes me feel happy that they care about me. I say accept the gift and be happy you got anything at all.

by the sound of your attitude, it seems like you don't deserve any gifts. I mean there is no requirement of gifts, if someone asks you what you want, you should specify no used games.

I do thin it's a little bit tacky to give some one a used games as a gift when a new copy is available, but it's not a big deal. At least that person had the thought to get you a game you actually wanted to play. They could hvae just gone into wal mart and picked up any piece of crap out of the value bin to give to you.

Ad out of curiosity, why did you get your Christmas presents so early?

I can't arge with that. But I'll let you know where this came from:
She got my name in a christmas draw; so she was pretty well obligated to buy me this gift. She's not poor. She just went cheap plain and simple.
And I thought I was being generous myself for asking for this $24.99 game when the limit was actually $40.

You're right. Christmas isn't about the value of what you receive when its between friends and family. But in this case, she was just someone obligated to buy me something, and she only did half the limit. Lame.

Used or new, it doesn't matter. The value of your game is no better if it is mint condition or how well you take care of it, it still sells for less and trades for less. Your collection means squat and you know why? IT'S USED! Take the gift, suck it up, and say thanks. If your angry about it, give it to me cause I'm not picky. I hope they enjoy the cash they saved by not spending too much on you! Oh yeah Marry X-Mas!

You didn't specify, but I can only assume that this was a draw from the office at work, because I know that my mother's work office does that too. Honestly, I think it's a horrible practice. Nobody should be "required" to buy a gift for somebody that they don't want to. But this is just my opinion.

However, you can claim she is or isn't poor, but you don't know how much cash she's shelling out for christmas for her actual family. You don't know her bills and how much cash she has in her savings account. Considering the fact that this is obviously somebody that you're not even close to in the first place, it's not really your place to piss and moan because she didn't want to blow a bunch of money on you.

You should be grateful, period. No one's obligated to get you anything, despite it being a work draw. Work hard for your money and maybe you'll begin to understand.

I do have to agree though that buying a used product as a gift is wrong but you dont tell the whole world how you feel about it. It makes you look ungrateful no matter how you look at it.

You already said she is not poor. Maybe she understands that a used DS game is the EXACT same thing as a new DS game and didnt think buying a new game would affect your relationship with her so she decided to cheap out.

If you're going to be picky about a gift, get it yourself.

I know if I want something specific, I won't waste anyone's time or money, I'll just get it myself.

Since everybodys financial health is different, I wouldn't mind a used game. If I only wanted new, I would sell the used game, buy a new one, and never say a word to the gift giver (except, thank you).

The OP's probably not ungrateful about getting a gift, but just venting in a forum that may understand the annoyance of receiving a used game, especially if it *looked* used -- disk scratched up and manual warped from water damage, etc. Plus, I've read a lot of stories right here on Gamespot lately about people playing the game themselves before handing it off to someone else as a new gift. Sure, it's nice that they gave a gift, but....who wouldn't end up venting about it somewhere or to someone? :) Personally, I try extremely hard to avoid gift exchanges of any sort. I'd much rather just buy what I want when I want it. It could be that the person who gave the used game (in such bad condition) did so intentionally so that if everyone in the forced gift exchange hates all the crappy gifts being foisted on each other, then they would all stop wanting to inflict it on each other in the future. (I really, really dislike gift exchanges.)

I like mint condition games too because, well, that's just how I am. But that's beside the point, I still have little sympathy for the OP. It's my opinion that no one is obligated to buy anyone anything, regardless if this is some gift exchange scheme. (which I hate as well, but I'll rant about that some other time)

You want something done right, do it yourself... or in this case, you want the correct game purchased in the condition you find acceptable, just go buy it yourself. Especially if it's only $25.

Personally, I try extremely hard to avoid gift exchanges of any sort. I'd much rather just buy what I want when I want it. I hear ya. The whole gift exchange idea is pretty stupid in my opinion and I always avoid them at all costs. Gift exchanges aside, whenever I do somehow find myself in a situation where someone puts a gun to my head and asks me what I want for Christmas I'd usually just ask for a chocolate bar or something. Kills two birds with one stone; I get some tasty chocolate and the gift giver doesn't have to empty their bank account.

You shouldn't be so ungrateful. Sure, it wasn't exactly what you wanted, but it WAS what you asked for. You didn't specify that you wanted a new copy over a used one. How was she to know that you would be so offended by receiving a used copy? If someone asked me for a specific gift, I wouldn't go out of my way to spend as much as possible on it, if I thought a cheaper alternative was just as good.

She went out of her way to buy you a gift with her hard-earned cash, and you should be grateful that you got anything at all.

Honestly, I would say that asking for a video game at a work gift draw probably wasn't the best idea to begin with. Honestly, I don't put my name into those things because I want certain things certain ways. I love having the boxes, manuals and discs look great as well, but that means that I won't ask others to buy them for me. My parents will occasionally pick up a couple of used games, but they know me and what I want. Honestly, I would talk to her, and explain that you are a collector. Tell her that it is your fault because you didn't specify which type that you wanted. Some people don't care what condition anything is in, as long as they get the game, and if she didn't konw you that well, you can't really blame her. Maybe her children or grandchildren don't care about the box, and she just assumed that you would feel the same. Ask her if she would be offended if the two of you could work something else out.

All this holiday cheer business is over, people want their gifts and they want it the way they want it.

The gift giving is long gone and to the person who gave the gift probably couldn't find it new.

I wouldn't advise that at all. You're basically telling here, "Thanks, but no thanks. I'm not happy nor grateful that you got me something that I wanted, just not the exact thing. Try again harder." I sure would take offense if someone came up to me and said that, I'd tell them to shove it. She's not obligated to anything regardless of a work draw.

Beggars really can't be choosers, and the TC has no ground to stand on in this situation.

I've read a lot of stories right here on Gamespot lately about people playing the game themselves before handing it off to someone else as a new gift.bekkilyn

You know what bothers me in those cases? If the person gave me a gift I'd be grateful either way no matter how it turns out, like they say it's the thought that counts. But there are situations in which the gift giver goes on saying "By the way it's used, I bought it new a week ago and played it until I beat it but now it's yours LOL!". Believe me these things happen mostly with people who can afford two new copies. I'd brush it off as a light matter and still be grateful but the impression I'm getting is "So that's what I mean to you huh? Nice to know". You just can't help but take it negatively in some manner. It's better off if what he said remained unsaid. Of course the feeling varies with every person, but it's usually the people who are casual friends with me who do this, never went through this kinda sitaution with people close to me. Family is also a different case altogether, especially parents, you should always treat them with kindness and respect for without them you wouldn't be alive today.

When I'm picking out gifts I always have this motto that goes "the look/quality expresses the value", so whenever I pick out a gift I don't go for anything other than new and high quality. It doesn't matter what the person who's getting the gift thinks, when it's my turn to give out gifts I go out of my way to make sure the quality is the best it can be, I guess you could say I cherish those close to me very much.

@ TC, I can come up with alot of reasons why I believe she bought you the game used. But first with regards to those saying he should've specified what he wants (new/used), I disagree because if that happened it wouldn't be considered a gift. If I wanted something specific and asked someone to get it I'd pay them back once they deliver what I asked for. Though yeah I'm guessing TC isn't earning a salary yet (all the more reason you should be grateful to your mom) ergo you can't comprehend the value of hard-earned money.

Which brings me to my next point, I'll share with you a couple of possibilities why I think she probably bought it used. Maybe she couldn't afford it but wanted to make you happy so she went outta her way to track down a used copy she could afford? Or maybe it was nowhere to be found new but again she didn't wanna see you sad so she tracked down a used copy after a long and tiring search? Think about it.

I don't think I've ever gotten a used game before (people rarely buy me games overall), but I'm not a collector-type, and so I doubt it would bother me. As long as the game ran, I would be cool.

For most gift exchanges, I get gum. WooHoo EpicWin. If I got a used game for Christmas, I would be happy, even though I really HATE used games. I still have 2 used games in my collection from other Christmases, and I'm happy. If I got a used game from an office gift exchange, I would be really happy.

Honestly, it's not about the obligation, it's what she wants to spend on you. I would not want to buy a new game for 30 dollars for some person that works in the office. The fact that she gave you a used game instead of a pack of gum is great.

Y'know, the more I think about this tradition of giving gifts the more stupid it all seems. Gifts are not surprising any more, they're expected, and now for some people it's not even enough to get what you wanted.

*sigh*

Kay I'm done ranting now... carry on.

Well, when you're the receiving end of the gift, the thing to do is to accept the gift graciously and say "Thank you." :)

When you're on the giving end, it's in poor taste to get something used for someone-- although I wouldn't recommend saying this to the person who got you the gift.

Haha na i can sorta see what you mean. As long as it works im okay but i dont like the idea of scratches- what if it stuffs up in a few months? Or if one more fatal scratch kills it?

[QUOTE="muthsera666"] Honestly, I would talk to her, and explain that you are a collector. Ask her if she would be offended if the two of you could work something else out.Rekunta

No, not at all. If you place the blame on yourself for not making your desires clear, then it transfers the guilt that the other party would feel onto yourself. Thereby, they didn't get you a bad gift, you just didn't tell them what it was that you actually wanted. While this may not be the truth of the matter, it takes the pressure off of the one that purchased the gift. Telling someone that the gift won't work for you doesn't mean that you don't appreciate the gift. It strongly depends on the manner in which you talk to the gift-giving party.

Beggars may not be eligible for choosing, but those recieving gifts are able to ask for what they want.

It depends. If its a used, say, CoD 4 (aka relatively recently released game) than its cool. But like the bargain bin-ancient xbox/ps2/pc games (like the army men games) get me annoyed because its obvious that they really didnt care
