I have recently finished Heavy Rain for the PS3, and honestly I have felt depressed ever since I finished it. I became so attached to the characters and wanted to continue living in their lives. I'm really upset that it's just over and nothing will be added to it... I know that it won't be as fresh if they add to it but I've just become so attached to the game and the characters that it's sad that it's over.

Rayman 1, My mom picked it out when I was just a baby and is now one of my all time favorite games. Super mario land 2 was my first actual game when I got my GBC at age 3. One of my favorites now. I sunk so many hours into that game when it's actually quite short.

@rubber-duckie (sorry! couldn't resist), that is what fanfiction.net is for. Youcan read or write about the further adventures of your favorite characters. It's not the same as playing the game, more like getting a letter from someone you miss.

I always get attached to my own PCs and so I can really only play through any game once, otherwise I miss my original PC. I only do subsequent playthroughs to do things that are out of character for me, and my heart's not in it. So, I have over 250+ hours in both Oblivion and Skyrim with exactly one PC apiece, while the rest of my family have spent about the same time, but countless playthroughs.

Also, the horses: I have to keep them alive. Oblivion being my favorite game,I still have Prior Maborel's Paint horse, although I did finally retire him to the Priory and now ride a modded steed.

Super Metroid. It was the game where after I played it I knew I would be a gamer for the rest my life.

Pokemon Red. It wasn't my first game (that would go to Super Mario Bros. Deluxe, which is a fantastic game in its own right), but it was the first game that I became hopelessly addicted to, and after I played it I knew I would be playing games for a long time. I spent countless hours playing and replaying that game, learning everything I possible could about it. Now I've sort of fallen off the wagon with the Pokemon games (my last being Emerald) and I think I would say Crystal is the better game, but I still have an unshakable affection for Red.

Oh god yes. The story of Ezio Auditore springs to mind. I felt a genuine sadness when I
watched Ezio's death in Assassin's Creed: Embers. His story was written so well, and the human aspect of him really made Desmond stand out as a bit of a one dimensional character.
Also, when I was playing Uncharted 3
and Sully was shot, I really wanted to kill anyone who stood in my way while I played through the Chapter during which Drake thought he was dead. I was very relieved when I found out he was fine.
I generally get attached to characters who I've created in games like fallout, dragon age, etc. Mainly because these characters are a reflection off myself. As for my compainions I tend to try and get them the best endings.

Off the top of my head:

Mass Effect 2- I really like all of the characters....well with the exception of Jack but everyone else I am quite attached to them.

Morrowind- The world is absolutly brilliant. Most of the characters I barely remember but the world? Amazing.

Oblivion- There were some characters that I genuinly felt attached to. Even given the lack of distinct voice acting I still got attached to some characters.

Portal/Portal 2- Again, characters. Very, very, VERY good characters.

Sims 3- The amount of hours I've spent and the amount of family stories I've created, I could never part with my Sims.

Minecraft- My first world may be gone...but the memory shall be kept in my mind forever.

Other than Mass Effect, I would have to say the Jet Set Radio series. The first game was unlike anything else I had played before than and I was instantly enamored with it. The combination of the brilliant visuals, characters, tagging, combat, tricks, and soundtrack has left me with immensely fond memories of JSR. Jet Set Radio Future was the reason I got the original Xbox. While the tagging in it was not as complex as JSR, and the story was essentially a rehash, it provided more of what I loved so much about the first one. I still listen to the soundtracks of both games regularly. I am happy to see that Jet Set Radio is getting an HD remake, and am hopeful people will actually pay attention to this time. One more thing, I still have the JSR disc buried somewhere in my closet. It hasn't worked for years but I can't bring myself to throw it away.

I agree from the first moments Desmond discovers messages written in blood in his cell, the dimension and depth of Assassins Creed has really drawn me in. The human story line involving Altair and Ezio, are excellent. Revelations especially was very emotional in how they closed the doors for Altair and Ezio. (Spoiler)

super mario bros (NES): it was the first video game i played in my home, my dad bought an NES and set it up in my brother's bedroom before school when i was 7 and each of us 3 kids had a go before school, despite being the youngest, i was the first one to beat the initial level, and i always felt neat about that!

zelda (NES): i decided to name my character zelda and opened up the master quest on accident, i still remember going to the first level and was like "wtf this isn't what we were playing earlier"! i played countless hours bombing all the rocks and burning every single bush i could find, i loved that game!

super metroid (SNES): i just loved this game, along with metroid prime.

zelda oot (N64): everything from the gameplay to scenery to score just set my heart aflutter.

perfect dark (N64): this was the first game that i really, REALLY dug my feet into, and the first game i played with people outside my family on a regular basis; i also credit it with my love of FPSs. i liked it so much that when it went on clearance, i bought 4 extra copies and passed them out to my friends!

metroid prime (NGC): the blending of FPS and the metroid series gameplay was astonishing, though i admit i was very skeptical when it was announced. one of my favorite games to date, and having the female heroine was icing on the cake. also my first and only true attempt at cosplay, just for fun. i went to the local game stores and for a few years i was known as "samus" when i'd go in plain-clothed:

zyxe's samus costume

deus ex: human revolution (PC): the last game that really got my attention, i had dreams of being jensen and dropping behind enemies, knocking them out and dragging them into vents  it also got me through a really nasty break up by giving me something to look forward to when i got off work :P amazing game nonetheless.
