Are there any PS1 games that have aged well in terms of graphics and gameplay?

It would probably be difficult, if not impossible, to find a large library of games that have aged well on the Playstation due to its horribly pixilated graphics. So lets assume that we're playing on the epsxe and we've bumped the resolution from it's horrible native resolution to something like 1280 x 760. What games are still relevent at this day in age?

Here's my list and the reasons why:

Metal Gear Solid - IMO this version trumps the GC game, Twin Snakes. While the visuals of the PS version are rather dated by today's standards, the GC version doesn't look that much better in comparison and the MG2 gameplay doesn't adequately accommodate MGS1's level design. Then there's the issue of voice acting and cutscenes and the list goes on and on. For those reasons, I think that MGS1 playstation is the definitive version to play.

Castlevania: Symphony of the Night - Still the best Castlevania on any console. I don't think I need to say anymore about this wonderful title that hasn't been said already.

Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 3 - Even if RE4 and RE5 are the new direction in the series, RE2 and RE3 are still fun. I don't feel 2 and 3 are dated in any way in comparison to RE4 and 5, they're just different; a different game play mechanic that borders on frights and scares, mystery, puzzle solving, item collecting, document reading rather than balls to the walls action. In addition, if one has never played RE 2, then one is missing out on a pivotal story arc in the series.

Fear Effect 1 and Fear Effect 2 - The Fear Effect series takes the traditional Resident evil element and turns it into a twisted anime inspired, noir flick. Elements that separates Fear Effect from Resident Evil:

* The backgrounds are almost always animated
* The game has you playing with 3 characters instead of the typical 2
* Game has a very mature setting; I mean like sexual overtones mature
* Characters are cell shaded which gives this survival horror game a unique charm

Dino Crisis 2 - Takes the original resident evil formula and turns it into a more arcade-like game filled with a scoring system, heavy-duty weapons and a mess load of dinosaurs. I think this game is relevant because it's the last good Dino Crisis in the series.

* Prerendered backgrounds are lush and exotic
* Constant barrage of dinosaurs coming at you to keep the action going
* TONS of weapons

Crash Team Racing - The best character-based kart game on the playstation and quite frankly, the based crash team racing in all of the PS family. Suffers from low res PS textures but graphics are colorful and animation is fast and smooth.

Einhander looks really smooth and it is a bullet hell 2d sidescroller shooter...it is really fun and challenging while at the same time easy on the eyes Gran Turismo 2 is still very easy to pick and play and is the best looking racer on the ps1 Crash Bash is one of the most colorful animated party games you'll ever see... Crash Warped is the best looking platformer on the ps1 and quite frankly is very easy on the eyes as compared to many of the ps1 platformers (Spyro even though I like more than Crash Bandicoot has aged horribly) And Tekken 3... but I can't think of many more that would look decent today

Chrono Cross - Its battle system and storyline is still great and fun to play to this day.

Parasite Eve - A mix of turn based RPG and survival horror was a great concept and done very well in my opinion.

Metal Gear Solid is a very good looking PS1 but there is no way you can say that Twin Snakes "doesn't look that much better in comparison". Which one is better is your opinion but Twin Snakes looks a lot better.

as long as you use the dual shock controller and use a standard CRT Television, you'll be fine. on an HDTV of course they always look kinda horrible. However, I just picked up Twisted Metal 1, 2, and 3 at a yard sale and they still play great. and Gran Turismo2 plays great still too. Some games just never get old, Die Hard Trilogy is still one of my favorite games.

Gran Turismo is the first thing that came to mind, I think that Disruptor held together pretty well too.

Gradius Gaiden - The game did to the Gradius series what Nocturne in the Moonlight did to the Akumajou Dracula series. It broke totally new ground, and is in my opinion the finest shooting game on the Playstation.

Graphics? No.

Gameplay? Chrono Cross, Final Fantasy VII, Metal Gear Solid (although it's archaic)

There are also many games with superior successors, but they still are quite playlable today (like Tekken 3, Gran Turismo 2, Crash Bandicoot 3, ect.).

Final Fantasy IX aged very well in terms of graphics, and a little less in terms of gameplay, mostly because of its basic battle system.

Hardly :P

I don't see how the first one has suffered anymore than the 2nd or 3rd. I didn't say it was the best of the 3, but it seems silly to list the other 2 and not that one. Same gen, same graphics, same gameplay. The story in 2 is better, longer and the game itself is more interesting, but it doesn't make the 1st one moot. Especially if you're interested in the whole RE story.

Probably only applies to me but i feel that Mega Man X4 and 5 have aged quite well. The graphics are sub-par by todays standards but still look good none the less and I always go back and play them cause they're so much fun. One of the reasons I bought the X Collection.
