just asking....i haven't taken the plunge yet into the current of era of gaming because the reveiws for a lot of the next gen games haven't been very good not to mention all the hardware issues and sku changes. now by no means do i consider gs the gospel of video games but i do use their reviews as a guide along with other sites and publications to gauge whether this would be a game i would be interested in purchasing. but lately the reviews for some games that had be really hyped either totally bombed (Lair) or were just meh (stranglehold).

on a whole do any of you feelthat the games of this generation are not as good as gamershad hoped?

It's still way too early to say I mean the PS3 or the Wii aren't even a year old; but yet we've seen games like GeoW, Bioshock, LOZ: TP, Super Paper Mario, Motorstorm, VF5 etc.

I think todays games are good just not as great as everyone was hyping them to be (or GSpotters at least) but ask this question here ina years time the responses will be very different ;)

I dislike hypes because a game that gets hyped too much is very likely to disappoint you - even if it is really good, it's probably less than you expected. And it's definitely to early for judgements about this game generation. Lets wait some years and see how todays games hold up then. A real classic game is playable and fun no matter how old it is.

I think the problem lies in your interpretation of GameSpot's review scores. Stranglehold got a 7.0. That means it's good.

that's true. it did rate higher than fair. but i thought it would rate higher given all the hype of it being a john woo game and chow yunfat as thecharacter but that's just onereveiwer at gs. if i played it i mayfind it to be better,,,. or worse.

I think it has to do with the new system a little bit being that its only .5 increments...but I think also that they just have always been kinda though.

I think that it's really comming down to how long a game is. Like Heavenly Sword IMO would have scored higher if it was longer, same with other games. I think that developers are starting to think more about just presentation then about how long their game is actually gonna be, minus Bioshock.

I think it's pretty obvious that both GameSpot and IGN have significantly different review scores than they did 5 or 10 years ago. It wasn't too long ago when just about every title was guaranteed a higher score at IGN and a lower score here. That's no longer the case, and I think it's just a matter of GS getting slightly more lenient and IGN getting slightly more strict...probably in the face of reader feedback that stated the obvious.

In general, I think the majority of GS critics are still harsher than most other sites, but not to the extent they once were.

I don't believe games have gotten worse, in fact I get the same entertainment with games today as I do with older games more or less so. The fact is, considering we have devoloped greatly in technology over the years, we have discovered what video games are able to do and what they aren't yet capable of. We then have so many expectation and standards that a game that doesn't utilize a certain idea that's been used forever is crossing over in to unknown territory and may be disliked. It's not the games that gotten worse, it's us that has gotten higher expectations.

GS' new review system is very mediocre; alot of people pointed out that 7 is now defined as "average" and below is just miss. I currently disagree with all of GS' reviews - due to the fact there is an unusual bias towards Microsoft platform games. Flame me if I'm wrong but the error list goes too far for an mainstream gamer and I myself, a hardcore gamer find the reasons they make to not purchase games stupid.....so yeah......

It just seems to me like a lot of the reviewers are expecting too much from a title. People can absolutely love a game like Heavenly Sword, and it will get an 8 for being a little short. A lot of games that are just fun to play wind up scoring in the 7's just because they are not considered original or groundbreaking. To me, a fun game deserves a good score wether it seems artistic or not. The GS critics are becomming more like the movie and food critics who seem to find flaws with everything that isn't completely obscure.

Yes, Gamespot's reviews have become more harsh lately. games that are obviously superior in nearly every way to games in the same series, or similiar games, are rated much lower. Just look at metroid Prime 3: Corruption, the controls are an incredible change to the series and it's not worse in any way compared to the previous games in the series, yet it still got an 8.5 compared to the 9.7 of the original or the 9.1 of Echoes (which is quite inferior to Corruption). Halo 2 for the PC got 7, Twilight Princess got 8.5. Seems like you have to redefine a genre nowadays to get a 9 or higher from Gamespot.

You are wrong. If there is bias I must have completely missed it in their recent reviews.

And of course, you are encouraged to make your own decisions on whether or not you want to play a game.

I find there is only a problem if you want there to be one. The only problem I have is console fanboys complaining about a game's score or celebrating because the "enemy" console's game didn't get above a 9. I am not directing this to anyone in this thread but if you want some proof then head on over to System Wars. ;)
