I'm a gamer at heart since the ninja turtle days on nes, but now that I'm 20, I kinda feel a little embarrassed to be one. For example, when I want to buy a game, I'll go to a store that isn't percieved as a video game hotspot (like GameStop or BestBuy) or I'll just buy the game online.

I guess people just think video games are for kids. My parents joke around all the time about how I'm still a gamer... smh

I love playing video games, but some of my friends agreed to disagree with me on this as well. They say things like, "what do you get out of gaming?", as in, what would you achieve being a gamer? (rhetorical question) Nothing. I would respond with the same answer everytime, "It's interactive entertainment. It's like killing someone, but you don't go to jail for it. So much fun". But anyways...

Are video games an addiction? When you apply for a job, would you put gaming under hobbies? When you meet a girl, would you tell her that your a gamer?

Are you proud to be a gamer???

Its not gaming or video games its you.

You are obviously insecure and just are overly worried about how people see you in their eyes rather then how you perceive yourself.

I tell my co-workers, dates, but I don't think I would put it in a resume. I'm not proud per se, but I'm not embarrassed by it either. I think it's just like any other hobby. However, I do see your worry where people may perceive that it's either a geeky, kiddy or pointless, but people don't usually react negatively when I tell them. Actually, I think it's neat when I say that I game and someone suddenly admits that he/she does too...

I'm 32 now and I have no problem buying games. Games and gamers are a LOT more common than they were in the 70's and 80's. People who have grown up with games still enjoy playing them. I guess I'm taking this more as a question of gaming "age" - well, my mom has completed all the levels of Ricochet Infinity numerous times and she's quite a few years over 20. People who think games are for kids have no idea that they implemented a rating system almost 20 years ago - I remember my dad having to rent Lethal Enforcers for me in 1992, and I remember how much controversy the blood in the Sega version of Mortal Kombat caused. Gaming is just as important to gamers as any other hobby you can name - sports, hunting, stamp collecting, bird watching, etc. It's a hobby to be as proud of as any other.

Why would anyone be proud to be a gamer? The only 'proud gamers' that I know all happen to eat their own boogers in public.

I can tell some people think I'm wasting my time when I tell them I like games. Either that or they think it's dumb. I honestly don't care what people think. I'm older than you TC. Maybe once you get a bit older you'll learn to concentrate on what you like and stop caring about what other people think. I find it funny because the people who think I'm wasting my time with gaming, probably spend a lot more time than I do in front of a tv. The difference being they're watching some tv show. Sat there doing nothing. Gaming a waste of time but sitting there watching seven hours of crap tv is perfecty fine? Yeah, whatever.

I'm proud of me. Gaming happens to be a part of me. And no, it doesn't go on my resume, any more than my makeup addiction or fondness for Chinese martial movies does.

I'm proud to be a gamer. I'm 21 and have no problem letting people know what I'm about. If a person is passionate about something they shouldn't have an issue with expressing it. Most people are obsessed with sports or movies, gamers should be allowed to show their true colors without criticisms.

I'm not sure if I'm "proud," but I'm certainly not ashamed. It's what I do and I've loved it ever since I first played Captain America and the Avengers on the SNES. When I was in high school, people would would make jokes and call me a loser. But whatever. I don't mind them, I do it because I like it. Forget what people think.

Gaming is a hobby. I don't quite see how you can be proud of it. It's like watching TV. Can you be proud of being a...TV watcher? No, I'm not proud to be a gamer because that doesn't make any sense to me, it's just something I enjoy doing, and I'm certainly not ashamed of it. Gaming would go under the list of hobbies. If someone doesn't like that for some reason then to hell with them. Saying, "I am a gamer", sounds weird. Just say you like playing games.

ehh...i agree and i dont...yes gamin is a hobby...but its also skill based..and mind based...not all games are video games...mtg and risk and poker and chess...all games that require the mind...some with rts games. fps and and rts games take alot of skill(and some luck) it does take some practice to get good at games...and most good games are skill/mind based...whether digital or not...and im proud that im good at games...just try to create a mtg deck or 2 and beat some people with them. it proves that ur ideas for combos and ur mind for strategy and outsmarting a fellow human are viable...and thats somethin to be proud of...that ur smart enough to do something that requires u to outthink an opponent...same skills that everyone needs in life at some point...so yeah...having a developed ability for that...im proud of it

I've never been ashamed to be a gamer - I have no problems going to any store and thumbing through their game for sale. If people ask "what do you like to do" I'm never embarrassed to say I play games.

I'm not sure I'm proud of it but I'm certainly not ashamed about it either, not at all. I just find it as not a big deal to even consider it a question. Its a hobby at most or mostly its a different form of entertainment.

I like watching movies or TV too, am I proud of it? Of course not.

Do you put "likes watching movies" in your resume? :)

Pround to be a gamer.... no.

I still enjoy playing but these days I would be better described as disgruntled.

Far to many broken or unfinished titles combined with far to many gamers who happily accept any excuse in order to keep feeding the habit. It is amazing how much abuse the majority of the community seems willing to put up with for an entertainment product. There only thing worse are the people who fight back with the "I'll still play it, I'll just steal it" excuse. I would probably get banned for life if I told you what I think about those people.

Wait till you reach my age (46) and go buy a game and other people in the store look at you and ask if you're buying that for your kids. I'm buying it for myself is always my responce and I get strange looks. But at the same time if I buy a PS3 game and a 360 game some dumb kid behind the counter always say "Those are for 2 different systems" and I respond with I know I own both systems. You should see the looks on there face.

You don't have to be 46 for that, you just have to be female... "No, it's for me." And then comes the weird looks, mixed with the "ohmygodit'sagirlgamer" stares, followed by failed attempts to be subtle about checking out my left hand to see if there are rings there. Yes, it's annoying. :P

I'm 26, and I still play video games. I don't like calling myself a gamer for said reasons, but I'm not ashamed of it. Video games have kept me out of a lot of trouble, and have caused some trouble in my life. As long as it doesn't affect your life in any negative way game on!

For me,it's more than a hobby, less than a profession. There's not much to be proud about, except any skills attained from games that could be applied IRL. I wouldn't put any gaming activities on my resume, with the possible exception of the organisational and analytical skills needed to maintain a position of responsibility inan alliance inEVE Online. That stuff is very much like a profession.

Love stories like this. I get asked occasionally if I'm buying the game for my kid. "What kid?" ;) The best one was when I get the "Aren't you a little old to be playing games?" Response: "Aren't you a little old to be listening to music?" "Uh...no. That doesn't make any sense." "Exactly." :D

Though I'm kind of different from them, because I like platformers and puzzle games instead of FPS and sports games.

Interesting array of responses thus far.

I've been playing games since the year of my birth and have no problem discussing it with anyone who ask's, so yea you might say I'm proud, and why not? In fact I often wear clothing relating to video games such as my Zelda hoodie, Umbrella corp, R.P.D or DMC shirts and people are always commenting. Its nice to know your fellow gamers. How are you supposed to meet new people with relevant interests if you can't have an honest discussion about your own hobbies.

Just relax and don't worry so much about what others think man, do what you like to do cuz YOU like it, not cuz of what anyone else thinks about it.

Peace.

Usually when people assert that games are "just for kids" or something stupid like that I just ask them why they think that is.

You will never hear a more chopped up and confused quote in your entire life. You will hear the word "like" 20 times and "um" about 43 times. And if there are others around they will try and make a joke to try and get the spotlight off of them. It's really hard to watch.

Most people believe in things simply because they were told by others that it is true. And of course when you ask these "others" they tell will you the same thing. Often you'll get the rediculous "that's just how it is" quote. So you end up with a bunch of people preconditioned to believe things when in reality they have no idea why they even have these opinions in the first place.

It brings to mind a quote:

"If you stand for nothing, you will fall for anything."

- Alexander Hamilton

If you like gaming do it because you want to. The people that ridicule you are often the ignorant people that Hamilton describes in his quote. If you want to do something then do it. Don't fall into the same trap that the others have fallen into. Peer pressure is just a nice way of describing control.

I'm normally proud to be a gamer, but sometimes I hide it from some people who can't understand it. For instance, about a year or so ago, I was at Wal Mart buying a couple of colorful DS games, and the middle aged woman who checked me out said "aww, it must be your kids birthday!", I said "um...yeah, that's right". :P

I also used to have those PSN trophy alerts on my Facebook page, but some of my idiot friends started making fun of it every time a trophy description showed up. What's funny is they play those stupid Facebook games all the time though. Bunch of hypocrites...

I'm quite proud to be a gamer...I've been playing games for much of my life. There was a time in community college and the start of university where I stopped playing console games, and I regret doing so. I'm a fully-fledged gamer again, though.

I am not embarrassed to admit that I'm a gamer. But I wouldn't say that I'm proud of it.

Neither proud or ashamed, it's a hobby that some think is a waste of time. But like with every hobby there is always people that will think it's a waste of time, even if your hobby is to cure cancer.

I'm only 27, so the only thing that would stop me from playing is not having enough time for it.
