Obviously it won't appeal to casual gamers, but it WILL sell. This is Blizzard we're talking about. After playing the beta, it seems a little outdated (yes, even the graphics). If you compare it to Age of Empires 3, which has been out for 5 years, AoE3 has arguably better graphics and 8 different civs to play as, not including expansions. Sc2 once again has only 3 races. But what it lacks in content, it makes up for in gameplay. The races are pretty balanced for the most part, and bear in mind this is the beta we're talking about. After a few patches this will be one of the best competitive RTS games out there.

AoE 3 just sucked though. Other than the water, i dont think anything about AoE 3 actually looks all that great.

I talked to every single gamestop in my area. Every single one of them are sold out of collectors editions and have taken over 500 preorders with more to sell at the midnight launch.

Tom Mcgreno you are an idiot.

It means they don't know what they are talking about because SC2will be difficult to pirate. And past history of starcraft is a 11 million units sold of Starcraft 1, in a time where gaming was nowhere near as mainstream.

Tahnit

It will be very difficult to pirate. Authentication servers are required for everything.

Authentication servers were required for the beta, look how that ended up.

As a matter of fact, the first crack is already out.

RobbySpry
I'm really not sure why people even bother implementing anti-piracy measures when even really strict ones are cracked within two days, maximum. The only people being effected and having their enjoyment of the game lessened are the legit buyers. Then they wonder why more people are pirating with every major release. It's like watching a dog chase it's own tail.

This is a common misperception. it's not black and white ... the difficulty of a cracking a game for the average user is directly proportional to increasing sales, especially during the launch window.

Also, Starcraft 2 certainly isn't hacked to play on Battle.net, and that's absolutely a draw for many players.

Well, from what i saw, Battle.net lists the # of players and matches. There were like 24,000 matches, and over 1 million players in "my region." I dunno if that means just NA or the east coast of NA, or even just Northeastern NA.

In the worst case scenario, it sold 1 million units day 1 in NA. Not too bad.

Console bias? but they didn't comment on the quality of the game, they just talked about sales. How can that be bias?

Also, they are right for the most part. Wether you like or not, there will be less sales because of piracy and because the gamedoesn't belong to popular genre such as a console FPS. To what extent you believe sales will be affected is up to you, but the fact is, its going to happen.

alfredooo

Battlenet will limit piracy plus there is no genre more popular on PC than RTS.

Now...I don't think that hotspot shows bias, it just shows ignorance and lack of knowledge on the subject at hand

it's not suprising though, I don't think Gamespot has even one staff member who is PC-centric. As console staff might put a good effort, but ultimate they just lack the experience and knowledge to pull it off sometimes

Got it last night and so far I'm a very satisfied customer. It's too early for a full review yet, but there are aspects of the game that I've been very happily surprised about.

you cant pirate it. it requires authentication for single player and multiplayer. The authentication servers require a cd key and activation. It requires constant internet connection. Its like AC2. Also they were talking about how the publisher might not have confidence in it. Thats total bs

Wrong... its already been pirated, cracked and the server authentication has been worked around...

Haven't you heard? Blizzard has no following. They release this game called World oif Warcraft or something quite a while back and it was a flop. I guarantee you no console gamer is playing it! So why would they succeed now?

Yeah that was dripping with sarcasm. I'm with you. I stopped listening to the Hotspot quite a while back due to their biased views on many things like this (and I'm not even a PC gamer anymore!)

http://gamrfeed.vgchartz.com/story/81096/starcraft-ii-sells-18-million-copies-on-day-1-excluding-korea/

"Early data is in and it looks likeStarCraft II: Wings of Libertyhas become the fastest-selling game of 2010 to date and one of the fastest-selling PC games of all time. VGChartz estimates that around 1.8 million units of the game were sold on day 1 across the Americas and Europe including both physical retail sales and Battle.net download sales. This figure does not include players in Korea where it is virtually impossible to accurately estimate how many people will have purchased the game due to the way in which it is sold - mainly via time cards and also with Blizzard announcing thatWorld of Warcraftusers with an active account in Korea would be able to play the game free of charge. The number of players in Korea playing the game on day 1 could be as high at 3-4 million but only Blizzard will know for sure.

Breaking down the 1.8 million sales in the Americas and Europe, VGChartz estimates that around 31% or 570,000 units were sold digitally via Battle.net (obtained via a study of order numbers during the first day of sale) with the remainder coming from physical retail sales and 57% of total sales coming from the Americas with the remainder from Europe."

You are joking right? Starcraft 2 is one of the most anticipated games of the DECADE! Sales? HA, it will sell TONS. Piracy? It uses battle.net, it hasn't been cracked yet, so no way to pirate it. They are biased. RTS are VERY popular on PC. Consoles controllers can't handle them good, that's why they aren't popular on consoles.

predicting SC2 would flop is just insane, firstly it's blizzard, secondly SC is probably the most popular RTS ever, I would not take any person in the gaming industry seriously ever again who spouted such drivel.

I really hope on the next podcast tom comes out and just eats crow. He needs to admit that he is a moron when it comes to pc games. Predicting any blizzard game to be a flop is a stupid moronic move. Tom has lost what little crediblity he has. 1.8 Million copies in the US alone in just under 24 hours. Yeah thats a flop lol

I got mine and I love it. Having not played the orginal since around 1999 this feels totally new and awesome. Obviously if I was to go back to the original now I'd see similarities. But who cares. And for the person moaning that its just SC with better graphics... isnt that what Madden, FIFA and pretty much every FPS do these days?

I have been a listener of the hotspot for a long time now. This last one on 7/20/2010 really pissed me off. Every single host was bashing starcraft 2 saying how it wont sell, people dont buy pc games anymore, people dont play RTS games anymore, people will just pirate it ect.

I have to say that now i understand that gamespot is completely console bias. What makes you think that starcraft 2 is going to flop? It is one of the most anticipated sequels ever. It is not just "starcraft 1 with better graphics. It is much much more than that. Tom Mcgreno was very negative about the game on every level.

Also the view that everyone pirates pc games is very insulting and condensending.

I will no longer be listening to the hotspot due to this clear bias.

1. not every host was saying Starcraft 2 won't sell, only Magrino

2.They're all PC gamers except Mc Shea

3. They express their opinions.... a lot

I'm not really that interested in the game myself (although, my interest has certainly grown since release, because I wouldn't mind buying the game now), but to say that it wouldn't sell is absolutely insane. Anybody that has been around for a while in the industry knows how big Starcraft is, and how highly anticipated the sequel was.

I'm just glad I don't really listen to the HotSpot that often now.

Multi-million day-one seller? Check.

9.5 review on this site? Check.

Also ... and this is something that I wasn't really expecting, the SC2 battle.net launch was quite smooth.

I think we can safely say that the hotspot got this one wrong.

I think the guys on the Hotspot (mainly Magrino) underestimated the PC gaming community. Anyways, people are getting really bitter over this. Even if they are biased towards consoles, I still enjoy listening. But whatever, it's your choice and if you find it unenjoyable now then that's fine. Just. Cheer up
