Best Console for Kids?

Current gen, Which console is best for kids?

Nintendo seems to be the obvious choice, But XBox1 recently announced the Rare collection, which does seem an attractive option. What about PS4?

Honestly. I've invested in older genre consoles. Original Nintendo, SNES, N64, GameCube, Sega Genesis, etc. I honestly believe those types of consoles are better for kids than what it is offered to them today. Most systems play in a way that is designed for more experienced players. Plus, with older systems you do not have to worry about inappropriate popping up in the game. This is just my opinion. I still play these systems to this day because of the experience.

Yeah, I'm did think of older systems, like the NES, Much simpler gameplay and design. However I assume a NES with games are pretty expensive now?

My kids love the wiiU. Plenty of games including Mario kart use motion controls so they're easy for kids. And it's backwards compatible so there's loads of games to chose from. Makes more sense than trying to find an old system that works and the games to go with it.

Good point. I've totally forgotten about backwards compatibility on Wii U.

Wii or WiiU, a huge bunch of pretty much the most popular games from NES, SNES, Wii and WiiU ( WiiU won't play GC games, Wii will ).

Anything that isn't a handheld is fine....

The sure thing is, tell me the Xbox and PS games are not too hard for kids and newbie. I mean most great product give me hard time and I'm ultra good. So I doubt kids will make it to the second level.

So I guess without being sure that Nitendo could be better for kids.

Another vote for Wii U. So many games on other consoles have at least some objectionable content for young kids. I guess it depends also whether the kids are really young or not.

The wii u for sure. The games appeal to younger kids.

For young kids I'd suggest a regular Wii because it's inexpensive and easier for them to work on their hand/eye coordination.

Oh yes, you can get a Wii for less than 80 dollars.

I feel that the PS4 exclusives are geared more towards the Mature audience much like Xbox 360 did. There are/were plenty of kid friendly titles on the PS3. I'd like to echo what someone else said though, N64, GameCube are both great systems for kids. a Wii that's Backward compatible and/or a Wii U that's Backwards compatible will do you well.

Its not really as bad as some would think. It depends where you get it. Look for a gaming store in your area. I have a great gaming store in my area that I buy older systems and games all the time from. You could also try EBay. A lot of people do bundles as well. Good luck!

Wii U was my instant answer when I saw the thread title. Everything about it is kid-friendly. Even their new first person shooter game (Splatoon, you may have heard of it) is very focused on children.

If you don't end up getting that, you can always pick between X1 and PS4. You can then purchase Skylanders or Disney Infinity or something of that sort. Lego games, too.

nice suggestion.. what I've said.. the new SNES classic console is a must have. Necromancer is a good character choice for Diablo 2 awesome.

My family has several kids (age < 6, none of them mine) scattered about, and whenever I see them they have the most fun by far playing the old stuff. A pair of my cousins prefer to play Contra and Double Dragon over anything that is presented on the new consoles, and this was just a month ago that I saw them playing these games. They have an NES hooked up to a TV that is almost always on, but their PS4 just sits there full of movies and little else. I have no idea why, but it is very interesting.

Give them a Gameboy, DS, or a Switch.

How old are the kids? I'd recommend PC (yeah, I know you asked "console").

There's a lot more educational and non-violent options on PC. I suggested Kerbal Space Program to a friend who has a 6 year old kid, and they love playing it together now. Super educational, fun, no shooting, and the kids love the Minion-type characters (so do adults :P ). It's also fun to upgrade the PC over the years with your kid, turn it into an ongoing project. Teaches them the importance of saving for components, planning an upgrade/build, and then the actual building process.

There are other options, too, for games of course, not to mention the other software (non-game) you can use to aid in your kids development.

The switch or any Nintendo console is good for kids, it´s geared towards them.

I've got 3 kids (8,4 almost 5 and 2 almost 3), Would I get my kids a switch yes but it would stay in the dock of its guaranteed to get broken, I've gone threw 4 DS and repaired them quite a bit. Nes is too hard for them the games back then were designed to be hard. I've got a ps4 and and Xbox rare replay on xbox is fantastic for them not to mention they love minecraft and goat simulator, they have Disney infinity but it gets quite costly with all the characters etc, Xbox is really easy to control what the kids see and can play with their family settings ps4 isn't. Also outright games is a new developer tailored for kids games I'm keen to see what their new adventure time game is like plus they have paw patrol and hotel Transylvania 3 in development. They have become pretty big pretty quickly. There games are available on all consoles. So there that too.
