Just got my hands on a Dreamcast in prestine condition. I wanted to know what the best games for the Dreamcast are. I only have Sonic Adventures and Sega GT so I would love to see what you guys think are the best games.

one game i highly recommend for multiplayer is NBA Showtime. It's like NBA jam, but you can customize the look of your character and upgrade the stats as you play. It's a GREAT 4 player game! also I remember having fun playing Gauntlet Legends 4player too. It's a hack/slash game where each player is a different character and you work together to finish levels. i'd recommend you look on youtube, there are several videos of the best games on Dreamcast.
The Dreamcast is probably my most played game console of all time: I've got 587 games for it and a save that has 1055'ish hours on Phantasy Star Online from when the official servers were up. You can still connect to an unofficial private server and it usually has a good amount of players online, so it's never quiet :) I've not joined it myself yet, but I do plan to do so soon. The website for the private server is here: http://www.schtserv.com/
If I was to make a top ten, it'd be like this (remember this is purely just what I enjoy the most - for example, some people absoloutley love Crazy Taxi, where as I get bored of it quickly):
1: Sonic Adventure 1 - some aspects of the game haven't aged too well, but when you first played this in 1998 (yes I got the Dreamcast 10 months early by getting the Japanese version) it felt incredible to play Sonic in 3D for the first time. me and my friends still play it often till this very day and enjoy it just as much.
2: Skies of Arcadia - I only got to play this very recently, but I'm loving every minute of it so far
3: Shenmue 1 and 2 tied - both Shenmue games can take patience to get into, especially 1, but it's worth it. it's not like any other game i've played - it felt just like it was my first time trying out a genre i've never played before and there was always something interesting to do besides the main quest.
4: Soul Calibur
5: Phantasy Star Online - it's rather pointless getting this unless you plan to connect to the private servers. you can find guides online on how to connect to them.
6: Jet Set Radio - it's called Jet Grind Radio in the US
7:Grandia 2
8: Sonic Adventure 2
9: Samba De Amigo - it's not fun whatsoever without the shaker things, though.
10: Ikaruga
runners up: Crazy Taxi, Code Veronica, Virtual On - it's crap playing this with the pad as the controls are innacurate - you need the really expensive accesory, power stone 1 and 2, all of capcoms and snk's fighters, propeller arena - it's an unreleased game. I'm gonna mention Chu Chu Rocket asseems to be a very popular multiplayer game, although I never got into it. When I played it online back in the day it was pretty laggy, so I don't see the private severs being any better. There's a site for connecting to Dreamcast private servers here: http://dreamcast.onlineconsoles.com/phpBB2/portal.php ...Phantasy Star Online, Maximum Pool and Quake 3 seem to be the most played on them.

there's LOADS of beats of rage games, which are custom made beat em ups using the streets of rage engine. you can find these on various sites, just google it. you'll have to burn them to a cd-r, though. it's possible to burn all dreamcast games to a cd-r and play them just fine - the only one that doesn't work fine is Skies of Arcadia there's no decent pirate copy of it. there's guides on how to burn them online. make sure you only do it if you actually own the real games in the first place, otherwise it's illegal. the only times i've done it when i've got the real games but they're scratched, or to play beats of rage games or unreleased games. if you ever do this then don't get them off dcisozone or emu paradise like most people do, try to get them from this list - it's got a good amount of games on it so you'll find most here: http://snesorama.us/board/showpost.php?p=330255&postcount=94 ..... the reason being that the guy who done those files arranged the order of the files very well, and some are actually done better than the original games! most people don't know what they're doing and just put the files anywhere, making it so the laser on the GD-rom drive move backwards and forwards a lot making it die a lot faster...but this guys a pro at it. remember only if you own the actual real game in the first place! sorry if my grammar is bad, i've been without sleep for about two days now...
-Draconus: Cult of the Wrym - An awesome action game, set in a fantasy setting, with come RPG-elements lightly sprinkled in. This game is very atmospheric and makes you really feel like you're in a fantasy world. And the graphics are some of the best on the Dreamcast.
-Giga Wing 2 - A very fun first-person space-ship shooter in the same vein as Star Fox or Descent. Very impressive graphics to boot.
-House of the Dead 2 - An on-rails shooter game. But this one differentiates itself from the rest with it's style. The whole thing is an homage to drive-in horror movies of the 70s and direct-to-video horror movies of the 80s. It has gratiuitous violence, and over-the-top cheesy voice acting that just makes you squeal with delight as you play through it, if you're into that sort of thing.
-Maken X - A very unique action game played from the first-person view.
-Marvel vs. Capcom - The ultimate 2D fighting game, IMO. This combines the best that Street Fighter games have to offer, arcade-quality graphics (arcade-perfect ports are rare, but this game manages to do it), and the best characters from the Marvel Universe, Street Fighter characters, and even a few suprise Capcom characters.
-Omikron: The Nomad Soul - Another unique game that combines a few different genres, but the best way to explain it is it plays like a mystery novel.
-Quake III: Arena - An absolutely awesome First-Person Shooter for multiplayer. This game is the missing link between Goldeneye: 007 and Halo: Combat Evolved. Unfortunately, there is no single-player to speak of at all.
-Resident Evil: Code Veronica - The pinnacle of the old school Resident Evil games. This is the biggest and longest of the "originals". More challenging than the first 3, I thought.
-Soul Calibur - This game is beautiful. That's the best way to put it. Arguably some of the best graphics ever to grace the Dreamcast.
-Spider-Man - The same game that is on PSX and N64 (but not the same one as PS2, Gamecube, & XBox). However this is the best presentation of the game, as it is on the superious Dreamcast. This game is so much fun with the wall-crawling and web-slinging mechanincs. And it really gives a lot fan-service for fans of the comics with all kinds of unlockable costumes and comics.
-Unreal Tournament - See Quake III: Arena. The exact same thing can be said about this game.
-Virtua Cop 2 - It's a on-rails light-gun shooter. Not much innovation here, especially since it was previously released on Saturn, but it's still a lot of fun.
An interesting thing about Omikron, as it was developed by Quantric Dream, the people behind Fahrenheit/Indigo Prophecy and Heavy Rain. It is a very good game that is underrated imo and it is true in the genre mixing tradition that Quantric Dream is known for.-Omikron: The Nomad Soul - Another unique game that combines a few different genres, but the best way to explain it is it plays like a mystery novel.

I just wanted to add to my description here. When I say a mystery novel in my description, I should add that it's a mystery novel set in the future.
some good games for the Dreamcast for an affordable price.
Virtua Fighter 3tb
Soul Calibur
Dead Or Alive 2
Resident Evil Code Veronica
Crazy Taxi
F355 Challenge
Sega Rally 2
Dynamite Cop
some good games for the DC that cost more, but still reasonable.
Shenmue
Shenmue 2 (if youre not in Europe , you will have to import it from Europe)
Skies of Arcadia
Grandia 2

it's a good game but maybe even a little too ambitious for it's time. no where near as good as shenmue, which can be compared in genre a bit. still the story was great and much about the game was way ahead of it's time that's why it still has some cult following especially after how big quantic dream have become and with the succes of heavy rain.
my favorite dreamcast games:
shenmue 1 and 2 best games ever made, especially 2. the love and passion this is made with is unheard of. even today no single free game allows you to walk in any hourse/store, have different emp's not one the same!! they all have their own life's kids playing in the street and going home around 6 to go to dinner as well as dad's coming home from work. incredible style and passion this game breathes
rush 2049, best multiplayer game I have ever played. especially the battle mode me and friends still play it a few times a year it's incredible!
toy commander, again an incredible multiplayer game. pls look it up if you have the chance
jet set radio, sega's creativity in all it's glory. still has incredible gameplay and graphics. one of most stylish games I've ever played and ahead of it's time
tokyo highway challenge 2, best racing game I've ever played and most hours and fun I've ever had with a racing game. endless gameplay hours and the game doesn't get tedious.
phantasy star online, I was like most addicted to this game online. incredible game and it was so new to me.

Yep the Quantric dream games are much like novels, thats what makes them very cool games.
Thanks everyone. I've got quite the list to go through now. :D I'm a big RPG fan so are there any quality RPG's for the DC? Again, thanks. I wasn't expecting this kind of response.

Darkman2007
Shenmue, Shenmue II, Power Stone (1 and 2), All the Resident Evils (especially Code Veronica which is actually my favourite dreamcast game and my favourite RE game of all of them), CAPCOM VS SNK MILLENIUM FIGHT 2000, STREET FIGHTER ALPHA 3, Sonic Adventure, Crazy Taxi, Dead or Alive 2.
The games are so much to list :P
same game , the only big difference is that the DC version has somewhat better graphics , and the inherent novelty factor of playing the game on a DreamcastRE: Code Veronica wasn't very fun on the PS2, is it any better for the DC?

IMO, the PS2 version for CV was just done to keep in-touch with the PS fanbase of the Resident Evil series. The dreamcast showed its potential with CV.
CV on the Dreamcast is better than the PS2 version (despite the PS2 version having more extras and an extended, detailed ending)...the controls and feel of the dreamcast running the CV was overall much better.

there was actually a 2nd version of Dreamcast Code veronica released in Japan only, called "Code Veronica Complete" that has those extra scenes, but sadly it was only in Japan
Thats what kept me from enjoying the game on the PS2, the absolute control nightmare. I felt lie I couldn't do anything. So, would you say the controls are better for the DC?
not really, the PS2 version controls like the older RE games on the PS1. the Dreamcast version still controls well though.Thats what kept me from enjoying the game on the PS2, the absolute control nightmare. I felt lie I couldn't do anything. So, would you say the controls are better for the DC?

My favourites;
1. Skies of Arcadia: My favourite game of all time, 5 finished playthrough 150+ Hours game time. One of the best RPG games if ever played. (yes you could call me a fanboy.
2. Grandia 2: As you can tell im an RPG fan, not as good as SoA but i spent another 100+ hours playing this!
3. Jet Set Radio: Brillianty fun game so much, so many hours playing this.

Alpha 3 on the Dreamcast is flawed imo, its just not as good as it could have been.
if you have a dreamcast, chances are you would want to play SF3 instead.
its not that SF3 is better, because I actually prefer SFA3, its just that the DC port is kind of disappointing , the controls feel a bit off and graphically its not arcade perfect which perplexes me, frankly there are better versions of SFA3 .

I never played street fighter alpha 3 or street fighter III on the dreamcast. The playstation 2 releasedStreet Fighter Alpha Anthology back sometime in 05 or 06 and that was the first time I actually played a console version of the game. SFA3 played seemed flawless, I am not too sure if it was a direct port of a previous console version of the game or possibly a direct arcade port.
I really got into Soul Caliber, DOA 2 and both marvel vs capcom games and didn't look too far past those games for fighters.
I also was a pretty big fan of JoJo's BizarreAdventure, one of the most underrated 2D fighters for the dreamcast. I am not too sure if you have every played that title, but I thought it was the perfect 2d fighter at that title.
Its probably the rarest and most expensive of any of the DC games released in the US, but if you like Diablo style action RPGs and perhaps are aware of the license, pick up Record of Lodoss War. Its pretty good.
Keep in mind that DC didn't suffer the sort of print run short falls that plagued the Saturn (and even the PS1 in some cases), last time I checked you should be able to get a copy of Record of Lodoss War for 35-45 USD, which for a "rare game" on a "dead" system is pretty reasonable.

The PS2 version is pretty much a direct port of the arcade , and a good port at that. the thing about the DC version is that its flawed, both graphically, and the controls, and there is no excuse for it. the PS1 version was cut down , but this is the PS1 , and considering that, its a decent port, it plays well too. the Saturn port is arcade perfect, it has larger character sprites then the Dreamcast version, and the game also has better controls. thats really the thing, the DC is a capable 2D system, it can run a perfect port of SF3 with no additional hardware, something the Saturn could not do, so SFA3 is more a flawed port, not really the system's fault.I got a friend who is gonna let me borrow his DC games, I'll post what he has as soon as I get them. (Well, he doesn't know he's gonna let me borrow them yet, thats why it may take some time.)
