Best game never to have a sequel or be part of a series? Pick your top stand alone game.

This question means that games like Ocarina of time, Final Fantasy VII, Half Life, Star craft, Warcraft, command and Conquer, Doom, Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat are excluded. They belong to part of a franchise.

My pick would be Eternal Darkness for the Gamecube. A great survival horror game that knew how to play tricks on a gamer. Playing that game at night or in the dark with the sound turned up was a unique experience.

I am also a big fan of General Chaos on the Sega Genesis. It was a great action strategy game that I can still play with friends.

This is a hard question so think about it carefully. Some games I wanted to list have sequels I never heard about.

I was going to say Rocket Knight adventures(GEN), but ends up that has a sequel named Sparkster on SNES.

Therefore, Blast Corps (N64), from Rare. And in close 2nd is Jet Force Gemini (N64).

Black Tiger is one of my favorite games. It was an arcade game from Capcom.

It had gameplay similar to Castlevania, while at the same time had slight RPG elements where you built up your gold to purchase/upgrade to stronger weapons and armor. You could also buy keys and potions.

Every level in the game had a unique design, and there were challenging boss battles.

I have to mention Magic Sword (another Capcom arcade game, later ported to SNES). Technically Magic Sword was similar, but it was different enough to not really be a sequel to Black Tiger.

Another honorable mention might be Rez, which first appeared on DreamCast, later appeared on PS2, and most recently showed up with HD graphic options on Xbox Live Arcade.

Rez is basically a music game where you shoot objects on screen to actually make the music play. The shooting and on-rails gameplay are similar to PanzerDragoon.

Rez is kinda hard to describe, it's well worth the time to play the trial version on XBLA.

Sorry, Chorno Cross(PS1) is part of the Chrono Trigger universe, no matter how much you don't wish it was.

Also..now in search for Sparkster(GEN)!

Wow this is a really hard question lol. Most of my favorite games are part of series, but the only game that I could think of that wasn't part of a series was Jet Force Gemini. Such a sweet game, also made by rare back in their glory days.

Ristar, as much as I love Sonic that game had surpassed it on nearly every level. What a shame it came out near the end of the Mega Drive's life span and was missed by a lot of people.

River City Ransom is actually part of the Downtown Nekketsu series. And it was quite a vast series.

Besides the fact that it had a sequel.

Marble Madness, Hotel Dusk, Road Avenger, Chu Chu Rocket, F355 Challenge, Chrono Trigger (I know that Chrono Cross exists, but it has little to nothing to do with Chrono Trigger), Anticipation (This game is so amazing), Electroplankton, Killer Instinct (Arcade only, but come on), zombies ate my neighbors, Psychonauts, Beyond Good and Evil, and Galaga.

Best standalone game? That pretty much wipes away just about all of my greatest games of all time list. I'm torn between three titles: Rocket Jockey for a very unique premise, Outcast for being a great action/adventure title(it actually had a sequel, but it was never released, thus I still count it standalone), and Anachronox for having a good story and some of the best dialogue ever.

It had a follow up actually. The sequel is called Ghoul Patrol.

And I also remember the main three characters from Chrono Trigger being in Chrono Cross, as well as one or some of the locations. So I don't see how it has nothing to do with it.

They were both called Sparkster in the US. They were both made by Konami. A regular consumer might think, "Hey, they made it for both systems. I'll get the SNES version, multiplats usually end up better on that." They're not gonna get the same game. The only other game I can think of to do that was Aladdin, and that was made by 3 companies, each with their own universal boxart between them.

Plus Radical Dreamers connected the two, I think. I know the CT PS1 remake did with one of the endings.

Killer Instinct (arcade and SNES) had sequels: Killer Instinct 2 in the arcade, and Killer Instinct Gold on N64.

Galaga '88 came out in the arcade. Galaga was also the sequel to Galaxian.

No Goldeneye? I suppose it depends on your definition of sequel, as none of the same developers worked on another Bond game, but if you wnt to argue that it does not count then I won't argue. I'm going to name a game that has never risen above the depths of obscurity, but I still love 11 years on, Mole Mania. You were a mole, and had to get a ball to a door in each level, but there would be obstacles and enemies that could be killed by throwing the ball at them. each level had an over world and an underworld, so you could dig a hole in the level and acces the underworld, emerging somewhere else on the level (it's a puzzle game, so the levels were only one screen large). There were also some very well thought out boss fights. I know this sounds very complex, but it's not if you actually start playing it. So I thought I'd add a link:

The first game that comes to mind when I'm asked this question is Full Throttle on the PC. Such an awesome game with great music, great story, pretty much everything about it was awesome, they should at least re-release the game for the DS or PSP for current-gen gamers to get a shot at playing it.

Another one I can think of is Gruntz, a challenging game with funny putty-like characters that offered a lot of humor, weapons, and puzzle solving, I think this game was something fun to behold.

A game that obviously couldn't become a series since so many spin-offs were already being made is Metal Walker. It's like Pokemon but with robots, obviously intending to achieve popularity, but has nowadays fallen into severe obscurity.

There's also Sigma Star Saga, but with how the game ended, it's understandable how it didn't get made into a series.

Doh! Forgot that one. Yeah it's a fantastic gem that was underrated when it came out. I suppose there is potential for a sequel if enough members of the development team were to get together and thought one up.

Mole Mania was awesome! A friend of mine had the game, and I'd play it. Unfortunately, I haven't seen said friend in years, nor have I the game. Nintendo should give it the DS treatment. The top screen would represent the surface, while the bottom one represents the underground. (Also, after reading that article, I feel silly for replying to someone telling me not to forget Muddy in a System Wars thread, and that he was the most underrated Miyamoto character ever. I said I didn't know who Muddy was, but the name reminded me of Mole Mania somehow. Ironic, huh?)

Does Xenogears count? It technically has nothing to do with Xenosaga, after all.

LandStalker is part of the Stalker series though.

You know, the game was planned to be a Shining Force Gaiden game, but SEGA dropped Climax off the series.

There was supposed to be a LandStalker remake for the PSP, but it got canned unfortunately.

No, I wouldn't say that, they were made by the same company and at the end of Colossus there is a baby with horns but I wouldn't say that either of these games is the sequel of the other.

I remember Xexyz. Despite the fact it sounds like a brand name drug, it was pretty fun.

As for my favorites, they would be Ico and Shadow of the Colossus. They're loosely related, but whatever. Also Grim Fandango if PC-only titles are allowed.

Alright! First person I've found (anywhere) that knows that that game is!
I love that game (although I never really beat it, it gets pretty hard. Give me credit though, when I played it the most I was only 5 years old)

I just remembered about Crystalis on the NES(and later on the GBC). It took the Zelda formula and improved it significantly(though Zelda took back the crown once A Link to the Past released). Shame on me for forgetting about it.

The Legend of Dragoon (PSX)

Myviewing

This man speaks the truth. The Legend of Dragoon is a fantastic game

Doh! Forgot that one. Yeah it's a fantastic gem that was underrated when it came out. I suppose there is potential for a sequel if enough members of the development team were to get together and thought one up.

We can hope right?
