My favourite game of all time is either Snatcher, Heroes of Might and Magic 3, Chrono Trigger, Ocarina of Time or Pokemon Gold/Silver. I really can't decide between those...

I hate to sound like a fanboy, but the first Kingdom Hearts. It was the first game I truly got into (spyro and crash bandicoot don't really count) and even playing it now, there's just something magical about it. Everything just seems to work between the actual gameplay, storyline, and the excellent FF cameos. Super Mario Galaxy comes in a very close second.

I also agree that the first Kingdom Hearts is better than the second one. I thought the second one was lacking in all areas except for the battle system. This is especially true for the platforming aspect of the game, which felt non-existent when compared to the first one.
As for the question/debate of what is the best game of all time, I have to say that is almost an impossibility. There are too many dynamics among all the different genres of games for one to say a certain game is better than another. Is it how much influence a game has had on the gaming world? Graphical prowess? Story? Popularity? Not all games have stories, and certain games obviously do not have the graphical capacities of others, such being the older ones. And certainly, a game does not have to be popular in order for it to be great, which in turn would dim down the chances of that particular game to be a major influence. Therefore I cannot answer this question...
...seriously. So for the fun of it I'm going to say the greatest game of all time has to be Grand Theft Auto III.

Ohhhh yeah. I mean I absolutely love the second and the series overall is probably my favorite (even though it only has 2 main games) but just how the characters developed, the plot was introduced, and the Disney/FF characters were introduced originally just makes it better than the second. I just can't see anything wrong with this game!
This question is nearly unanswerable, if I were to go genre specific, I could come up with a couple loose answers, but I just can't call one or the other the greatest, it's too big.
FPS Goldeneye for showing a console was as good a place for the genre as the PC. Half-Life 2, for taking the next step in storytelling and creating a world that was a big a star as the action. Quake 2 for setting the bar for modern multiplayer.
RPG Dragon Warrior 2 for putting a most JRPG conventions in place. FF7 for it's contribution to cinematic storytelling. KOTOR 2 for making good or bad decisions affect those around you as well as yourself. Oblivion for sheer depth of experience.
Goodness this could go on for a while, maybe when I have the initiative I'll create a bracket thread based on GS votes and we'll get some kind of definitive answers, at least in terms of people who use this site.
my favourite game that ive had countless files on is....yes.....final fantasy 7. great emotional story, both serious and humerous characters all well placed in a RPG that is filled with exploration and countless missions and bosses.
NOW the hard part: the contenders for no2:
metroid prime
mgs3-snake eater
pokemon yellow,gold,crystal
ff8,9,10
sonic 2,3 and knuckles and sonic adventure 2
halo 1,2
super mario 64
mario kart 64
don't want to overdo it:D
Zork
Free roaming, interactive puzzle-solving game that was funny and relied onthe user's imagination to fully enjoy the game. Plus it was one of the few games that would actually respond to you if you got mad and swore at it.;)

I've played alot of games over the years. My personal favorite is Zelda ALTTP. Most that say OOT is the best it was thier first Zelda and never experianced ALTTP when it first came out. The scale of ALTTP is the largest of any Zelda. The inclusion of the Gorons and Zoras in OOT was just horrible. OOT lacked the detail that ALTTP had. Personaly I thought Banjo was better then Zelda.
Runner ups
Metroid Prime 2, Resident Evil 4, Yoshi's Island, Super Metroid, MGS4, FF7
pestro
Well I think the best Zelda game is OOT and it was the forth Zelda game I played. The first Zelda game I played was the one on Game & Watch (which I still have actually...), the second one was ALTTP (when it had just been released) and the third one was The Legend of Zelda on NES. I played the hell out of ALTTP and loved every single moment of it. However, I did play (and like) OOT more...
I have to agree with JDC on this one. I prefer ALTTP over OOT. Why? To me, there are more rough edges in OOT, which imo its not a bad game, but considering its the first Zelda game in 3D thats understandable. Same goes for Super Mario 64,there are rough edges in that game as well. But ALTTP to me was the grand coalition of all the Zelda games at that point. The world felt alive, the story was engrossing and LInk you felt a connection for. The opening sequence for me in that game is one of the most amazing and sudden sequences in a game. A young man being forced awake in the middle of the night, heading out into the cold rain, you are armed with only a lantern. Guards patrol the area fully armed and you start as this vunerable boy. As the game progressed from being a boy in the cold rain armed with a lantern, you grow into a full fledge heroic warrior, and at the end you are not the same as you once were. You may not get much on Link, but you saw him grow from a regular boy into a full edge warrior. That game gave that presidence. While In Ocarina you do start some what normal, you h ave no fairy and suddenly everyone knows your in this propheycy and stuff. Yes good story, but I prefer the young man being forced awake and thrown into that situation...and growing into a hero.

Seriously? It's a fairly decent game without a doubt, but this is the best game of all time we're talking about here.
So your saying there are right answers and wrong answers when it comes to everyones favorite game of all time? He is entitled to have have that game as his favorite game of all time. Any game can be anyones favorite, and I would not understand it. Favorite does not stem from quality, but the impact the game had or simply maybe it helped some one go through a tough time. Yes Seriously, he is serious, and there is nothing wrong with that. I suggest you go back and look at the word Opinion and learn that favorite game is subjective. It may surprise but there are plenty of people that count not only this game as their favorite, but the whole franchise as one of their faves.
Favorite game does not have to be super popular mainstream games...no not at all. Xenogears for example is not the most popular game, hell most gamers who ask me about Xenogears donot even know what it is. But its my favorite and I Donot care if its popular or not. I know people who consider games like Popful Mail, the Valis series, Lunar, and other lesser known games as their favorite games of all time. Popular does not always mean the best or favorite to others. So he is entiteld to his choice, as much as you are entitled to yours.
For me, there's no contest. Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask. I'm still playing that game today, and here's why.
-The story is, to me, a work of writing genius. It fits so well with the gameplay, and it's highly original, especially for the Zelda series. (the only mention of Zelda comes in a flashback, where she teaches you the Song of time.)
- The many masks. While, yes, some were more useful than others, I loved how there were so many to choose from and how each had a unique look.
- The transformaion masks. They offer all new ways to play the game and have some surprisingly emotional backgrounds. (such as when, after the closing credits, you see the Deku Butler kneeling in front of the sad- looking growth coming out of the ground. It's here that you realize that, in the begginning of the game when you were turned into a Scrub, you took the form of the Skull Kid's first victim (or one of his first), the Butler's son.)
- The mini bosses. The bosses were rather sub par for the series, but there were some awesome and highly original mini bosses.
- The army of sidequests. There is a ton of stuff to do in this game, a rarity for this series. Also, there were more Hidden Grottos and secrets than in Ocarina of Time.
- The cast of characters. Every one just feels like they belong in this doomed world and they all offer an interesting side story.
- The game isn't afraid to get dark when it needs to. There are actually some fairly grown up things in this game.
- The swords. Anyone who has seen the weapon loadout for this game knows what I mean.
- The overall atmosphere. There is a permeating sense of mystery, dread and confusion present throughout the whole game. I love horror, and this end- of- the- world scenario helped create a very creepy atmosphere. And then there's Ikana Canyon. Enough said.
- The backstory. There are a wealth of tribes in this game, a few repeated from the previous Zelda and a few new ones. For instance, the Deku Scrubs actually got wise and can talk and have formed a civilization. Each of the 5 areas has a great backstory, especially Ikana Canyon, which, in case you haven't guessed, is my favorite area of the game.
- You can repeat everything!!! Aside from the first 3 days, everything in the game is fully replayable. Sure, you don't get the same reward every time, but few games can do this. If there was a particular sidequest you especially liked, guess what? You could replay it!
- The opening and closing. The opening shot of Link riding Epona in the Lost Woods is just awesome. And, after going through some very weird areas, you reach clock town, a parralell world to Hyrule. And the whole last chunk of the game in the moon is amazingly surreal. Also, the closing cinematic of everyone in Clocktown having their issues resolved is really satisfying to watch. And the last shot, with the drawing of the Skull Kid and Link becoming friends, is easily one of the most poignant scenes in gaming, enhanced by-
- The soundtrack. It has many of the same themes from OoT, (such as Saria's song... amazingly used) but also has a great score all it's own. I love how the clocktown music is and how it progresses from calm on Day 1 and gets gradually more urgent on Day 3. Each day has a different reix of the same theme and it comes together wonderfully. And the remixed Overworld theme is awesome.
- Feirce Deity's Mask. Need I say more?
LoZ: MM is an amazing game and is, in my opnion, as close to perfection as games have ever gotten. I know many people don't like it, but we're just gonna have to agree to disagree. I will remember this game always.
So, while OoT may have brought one of the best (if not the best) series of all time successfully to 3- d, MM is a superior game. It is an experience and is one of the very few games that are must plays. So, if you've never played it, I urge you to try it out. Go into it with an open mind and you will come to love this game, despite it's shortcomings.
Sorry for making this a wall of text, but it felt good to get all that out.

And whats the difference? None actually, because my favorite game of all time is the best game I ever played. So that really does nothing for your argument and you have no grounds to stand in your argument since basically you contradicted yourself. Also because both Best and Favorite are subjective and essentially mean the same thing. So again you have no reason to question anyones choice about it. You know why? I know peop-le who hate Final Fantasy X and would question your choice and rip into you saying that its your favorite game of all time. So the simple fact is despite the game, the answer is subjective and should not be questioned or even ripped upon as you just did. You should be a little open minded to peoples tastes....

Ya know, ive never actually played on a Zelda game, ive heard nothing but good things tho, and i have just bought a wii, so i might give them a try
I obviously reccomend this one the highest, but you really can't go wrong with any of them. Although, the older they are, the better they tend to be. Also, if you want to play the handheld ones, I reccomend starting with the Oracle games, then playing Link's Awakening. But, like I said, all the Zelda games are amazing. (Except maybe Phantom Hour Glass.)

Personally for me, this is just me I owuld start with a Link to the Past. To me thats the best Zelda Hands down, but I can understand why one would like Majoras Mask since that game breaks the traditional Zelda Florida. But for me its always a LInk to the Past....

The title of this thread is 'Best game of all time', not 'What's your favourite game of all time'.
There is no best game of all time. I simply thought Soul Reaver 2 wasn't that good of a game, so I was surprised to see someone saying that was their favourite game ever. I simply wanted to see what his reasons were and what he liked most about the game - it would be interesting to know. I wasn't going to go: "AS IF!!! SOUL REAVER SUCKS!!!". We all have different opinions.
I know Final Fantasy X has a lot of haters. It's just been my favourite and overall most enjoyable gaming experience, just like how Soul Reaver 2 was exactly that for the other dude.
Jeesh.

Jeesh.
You never asked for reasons. You basically said that his choice was not good enough for this list as you felt the game was good but not great enough. Thats what you said, not in those exact words, but basically phrased in those words. So you should ask more so then saying well this game is mediocre why is it even in this thread. Instead of simply saying Jeesh know that you were wrong in deriding the guy and learn to be a bit more subjective. From your last post it seems you did, but you did still deride him on his choice.

I expected him to give out his reasons if I put something along the lines: "Is that really your choice?". But yeah, you're right.

Alright, glad you understand. I just get frustrated, and not you in particular, but people like to come on here and say thisg ame is the best game ever as if its a fact, or some people will deride. You would be surprised with some of the favorite games I have seen, however they are those peoples favorite and thats that.
