There are many, my favourites are:
Dragon Warrior VII. I played that game for months straight, something I've yet to repeat with any game.

I picked it up but have yet to play it.
so many great ones, it hurts to pick a favorite...
Twisted Metal 2
there I hope you're happy, you made FF7 sad
My favorite was Fear Effect 2: Retro Helix.

That game (and its predecessor) was pure awesome. Shame the ad campaign was so bad.
Anyway, my favorite is Carnage Heart. Programming and building mechs isn't for everyone, but I loved it. The graphics were unambitious (to put it kindly) and the music was the aural equivalent of sandpaper, but the gameplay was incredible. Programming fields of awareness, response to a given stimuli, whether or not the responseis thesame each time or whether there is a degree of randomization and if so what should the alternate response be. Making sure that a mech didn't fire a missile into the back of an ally (there were three mechs on your team) just because there was an enemy on the other side...
You never build the perfect mech because new technology is always being tossed at you so you often had to tweak the AI program and at various stages had to throw it out entirely and start over again (well, you didn't have to but you did if you wanted maximum performance).
Its a shame none of the sequels were released outside of Japan.
I cannot choose one so i will give my list of nominees:
Grind Session ( best skateboarding game ever? )
Cool Boarders 3
Tomb Raider 2 & 3
Spyro the Dragon
Twisted Metal 2
Rogue Trip
Star Wars: The Phantom Menace ( best SW game ever, besides SWBF series )
Classic games. Ahhhh the memories . . . . .
Silent Hill, that would be my favorite release for the original Playstation.
Even with it's dated graphics, it's creepy atmosphere still holds up well today, it still creeped me out when I re-played it last year just as much as when I first played it back in '99.
Next would be Resident Evil 2...definitely one of the best sequels released and one of the best games of that generation.
oh man
galerians
resident evil 1,2,3

gex
medieval 1,2
final fantasy 9

I played it when it first came out on the NES. You should play that version.I forgot RE2 was on the PSX. That game scared the crap out of me since it was the first RE game i ever playedNext would be Resident Evil 2...definitely one of the best sequels released and one of the best games of that generation.

What do you believe is the best game for the original Sony PlayStation? Many critics rate Metal Gear Solid as the greatest, but my personal favorite is Final Fantasy 7. Final Fantasy 7 was the game that showed role playing games could be mainstream and sell millions of copies. Not to mention the graphics and story line.grh11
I have to agree it's FF7 because it was teh breakthrough game for the PSX. I remember everyone moaning about the PSX lacking quality games until FF7. The floodgates opened after that.

I'm going to second this one.
I am currently playing this game and having a freakin blast! Depth and size are way ahead of the game's time. (Which make up for the less-than-perfect visuals).
I have a lot of nostalgia for the original Rayman game and it played great on the PS1. Unfortunately the sequal was crap on that system. Good thing I had it on N64. Castlevania Symphony of the Night certainly deserves a mention
syphon filter
tenchu: stealth assassins.
resident evil
can't decide.
loved all of them. all time greats imo.

Final Fantasy IX and VII
Metamania
Two of the better FFs we got, for sure. FFVIII was terrible.
I respectfully disagree. FFVIII was my favourite JRPG that generation. However my favourite PS1 game is Wing Commander 4. It would be WC3 if the port were not so bad, I first played them on PC and got the PS1 versions years later for cheap second hand. Regardless they are still by far my favourite games of that generation, any version of them.As much as I love the twisted metal series I'm afraid I have to go with Spyro 2: Ripto's Rage.Sali217my man :D
