I was wondering if any of you guys would please write your top 10 list of best RTS games in the last six years.

I ask for top 10 because I can't find good articles about it online, and if I just said RTS games everyone would just write Starcraft over and over again. And I'm doing this to find games I haven't played.

Starcraft is like the only AAA RTS to come out in that time period...

Dawn of War 2 came out in 2009 and had several expansion that came later. It's a very good game, but technically outside your date range.

Supreme Commander: Forged Alliance is the only RTS game I need. There is a fan-made matchmaker called FAF (Forged Alliance Forever). It originally came out in 2007, but the community is more active than most modern games).

(Starcraft Sucks, sorry it does)

In the last six years? Sadly (and by TC intented) Stracraft 2 is too old, since it released in summer 2010. So I guess I'll go with Grey Goo

Well, StarCraft II: Legacy of the Void was a standalone 2015 release, so that might count. Dawn of War II: Retribution was a 2011 standalone release. Homeworld Remastered was released in 2015 and quite recently got a big patch that made everything better, while Homeworld: Deserts of Kharak was released earlier this year. There's also been 4 Total War games in the last six years: Shogun 2, Rome 2, Attila and Warhammer. And of course there was Grey Goo (2015).

Company of Heroes 2< Only one worth playing online.

It's hard to really name just 3 not a lot of them are worth playing if you're talking about online.

If you want to go back a little further there's the first COH, it came out in 06 but has much better graphics than 95% of the games that are currently out that are RTS. It was the biggest revolutionary change to the RTS S since the first starcraft, the second starcraft also sucks, its just spam... It's older than SC2 but makes SC2 look 10 years older than it game-play wise and visually.

Grey Goo is such a lazy game, there is no beauty in it, I don't know why people keep recommending it.

I enjoyed Wargame but it's a very static game lacking the character of games like CnC or Starcraft.

Gameplay wise though, it's pretty solid.

You should try Act of Aggression. Very similar to C&C and in a modern setting. Its a fun game, although maps are limited and no steam workshop support which is a shame.

Homeworld: Deserts of Kharak

It was not a very long game, and the multiplayer did not have much staying power (though there is a ton of potential), but the game was simply incredible for as long as it lasted.

If you're like me and RTS's are about epic singleplayer campaigns (I know that is not a popular belief, but I was raised on Dune 2, Command and Conquer, and Warcraft), it's not only a great game in it's own right, but it pays homage to the classics. The story telling and tension is simply top notch, the gameplay is pretty basic rock-paper-scissor balance but amazingly fun due to this simplicity, and it's just a cool concept.

Completely worthy of the Homeworld title, which is likely the best RTS of the past 20 years.

Yeah I kind of felt that way too. I mean, the game is great and the factions are both unique and perfectly balanced, but the experience felt very bland from a singleplayer standpoint. Not sure how multiplayer is, but given the three factions and good balance, I imagine it could have been a contender against Starcraft 2 if it had been as popular. Petroglyph is staffed by a lot of former Westwood (of C&C fame) folks so they really know how to make a neat game.

Yeah Wargame is great but pretty dull from an immersion standpoint; it's basically just a strategy sim more than an RTS, if that makes any sense. It's the other side of the coin of World in Conflict: where WiC was modern setting but not realistic, it had great story and a lot of life; conversely, Wargame has incredible detail and a lot of depth from a technical standpoint, but no life and no story.

Yeah that was a fun one too!

It's funny all these RTSs have come out and they're all pretty good, but when I think about the RTS genre I usually think "Man, that genre could use some more life". It seems to be doing all right, though!

RTS is a bigger genre than what I think you assume it is.

Total War: Atilla, Total War: Warhammer, We Are The Dwarves, The Dwarves, Planetary Annihilation: Titans, Warhammer Dawn of War 2, Dawn of War 2 Chaos Rising, Dawn of War 2 Retribution, Shadow Tactics: Blades of the Shogun, Cossacks 3, Sins of a Solar Empire Trinity and Rebellion, Total War: Shogun 2 - Fall of the Samurai, Door Kickers, Ashes of the Singularity: Escalation, etc etc

Age of Mythology and Age of Empires 2 and 3 have been released to steam.

Honestly the genre has not been doing as good as it used to back with games like battle for middle earth and age of empires among many others, however there has been a rising interest in the genre again and it's been developing some pretty decent games. Anyway dawn of war 3 is coming out this year.

I personally don't like the high tech and prefer the more fantasy style which has been missing heavily but if you like the high tech it'll be all over.

These are the ones I have been/still am enjoying this year:

Age of Mythology: together with the second one of the best classics, got it cheap on steam sale with the expansions.

Total War Warhammer: rally like the fantasy of warhammer in a total war game

Civ6: a good 4x like most of the time

Endless Space 2: bought into the early access, sci-fi 4x, maybe check all the titles by amplitude studios I enjoyed all their games

Shadow tactics blades of the shogun: edo japan comandos style game, not the classical definition of rts but requires a lot of planing

For the future you may want to keep an eye on Total War: Arena, basically total war multiplayer

This right here.

The thing I love about the Homeworld games are, as you said, their simplistic approach combined with excellent atmosphere and storytelling. The narrative is focused and well told, beautifully presented, and just minimalist enough to get the point across. I also love the attention to details (such as the ambient coms chatter while playing) that makes you feel like you're really overseeing an operation yet are not the only one involved.....helped out by some of the best voice acting out there. It makes the world feel alive. Sad that the MP is pretty much dead and that it was a tad short (considering we're probably not going to see another based on how this one sold), but nevertheless the gameplay is stellar.

I agree 100%, Deserts of Kharak is absolutely a worthwhile entry into a legendary franchise.
