There was actually a thread like this in the PC forum recently...anyway...here is what I think.......

- Western RPGs usually only taking place in a Tolkien-esque fantasy setting....there are so many other great settings that would be perfect for RPGs that are either underused or never used.

Robnyc22

So Fallout, Fallout 2, Deus Ex, System Shock 2, Fallout Tactics, Bioshock, a couple Diablo clones in space that I can't remember the names of and the KotOR games never happened, eh? :P And there's more :P

a cliché that really annoys me is that the last 2 elder scrolls games cast you in a similar position as teh first. At Least Oblivion tried to blend the prisoner aspect of Arena with a decent Dungeon Crawl tutorial a la Daggerfall. Too bad I have yet to play an RPG that has a dungeon that's even as "impressive" as Privateer's Hold.

-Dual Wielding a la Red Faction 2 and health regeneration.

-"realism"

-JRPG's have shallow gameplay and the devs think that a "deep" story that's the same as the last iteration in the series is fair compensation for the price tag. WRPG's are starting to follow this trend. Sudeki was only the first of many.

-Diablo II clones

Some Diablo II clones are good though like Titans Quest and Xmen Legends, though most of them are bad I agree.

JRPG's....99.9% you get a 17 year old girly protagonist who actually turns out to be a boy lol, and all the cliches that come with it...I don't know though, there must be something about the number "17."

-Starting off with a lot of power ups then convinently losing them and having to get them back.

-You need to collect 3 *insert various items here* so you can get a *CoughhackmasterswordcoughhACKexplosion*

-Rpg main characters having perfect and oddly color hair.

-movie video games

-fungi that makes you grow

-getting caught in a stealth game

-a princess needing rescuing

-a "dark lord"

Western military vs terrorists, nazis, or some other modern evil.

America saves the world again... from the evil mentioned above.

Some weapon of mass destruction as the near final boss.

Predictable endings...

Corporate or government agendas with all it implies in a game...

Time travel and/or manipulation...

Elemental themed environments (water, ice, fire, wind, etc...)

Cool and mysterious anti-heroes who wear black, have long hair, and their own secret motivations that turn out to be noble.

Mad scientists (often like a cartoonish parody).

Some (name here) Liberation Front in the plot.

Female sidekicks with more bOObs than brains...

Male characters with more muscle than brains...

Retired special secret agents that return to action because their former commander blackmails them.

Boring final bosses that you beat easily because you have all you need (for the plot's sake) to do so.

Princesses...

There's always something ancient or top secret...

Ridiculous shops that only sell game items...

Some cheesy dialogues that sound like "here comes the boss for this area...", "No matter the cost"..."I'll stop you, you fiend"... "The world will be mine"... "You can do it" (of course I can, it's just a game)... "So you set all this from the beginning..." etc. etc.

And much more... but they're just games; I suppose we can't expect much more from them for what they are.

I mean, videogames are not (and will never be) art; none of them as they are just made to sell. They're just entertainment and can be as good or bad as any Hollywood movie. Nothing more, I'm afraid.

Well, I love videogames, but I have to admit the reality.

Biggest Cliche in gaming.

Saving the World ... everything else follows that. Make a game where you have to destroy it or at least tickle piglets

Gabranth wasn't necessarily evil in the end, he realized what he has done but then it was too late...you know, it was like Star Wars in a sense, (Luke and his Father) just the whole theme of it. Except that in FF12's case, no one cared about anyone.

That was such a weak "plot twist," especially since the Trailer clearly indicated that it must have been Basch, that what made the whole thing so intriguing to me. I should have known though. Anyway, the whole execution of FF12's Story was weak imo
