What's up retro game fans!

GameSpot and GiantBomb editors are teaming up to unlock the vaults at the office and our homes to dig up some retro games and actually play them on the retro consoles for all to see in a new show. Based on what you share with us, we'll find some real gems to hunt! If we can't find what you want us to play in our vault or homes, we will also head down to some retro places to hunt for it!

So, if you've had a hard time finding a specific game, we may very well have it in our vault! Share what you'd like to see here or you can email us at onthespot@gamespot.com.

We'd love to hear what you'd like us to find and play for good 'old retro gaming-sake! If you also know where we can get some of the oldie but goodies, share the website with us!

You may also share what you've got and why it's so excellent for us to want! Do it now before we start our hunt tomorrow.

You guys should definitely play Shenmue and Shenmue 2, both which can be found at most retro-video game stores, and Ebay or Amazon of course. I feel like the world needs to be reminded of how incredible these games are, and show why very few other game franchises deserve another installment more then the Shenmue series. I have never played a game that was so innovative for its time, and also contained one of the most beatiful original stories in all of gaming. Shenmue 3 must be made and the more exposure these games have, the more likely Sega will finally pick this series back up and give us the very long overdue sequel many of us have been dying for. Please play this one, it would make my day :)

Tetris Battle Gaiden! Watching Giant Bomb play that was amazing. Always need to include that in any retro game showcase.

I'd love you to see you guys play some non mainstream or niche titles, perhaps The 7th Saga or E.V.O: The Search for Eden.

I'm guessing you already thought of the more popular games, so I'll list some games that are more under-the-radar:

Ristar (Gen)

Sonic 3D Blast (Gen, Saturn)

Mr. Nutz (SNES)

High Seas Havoc (Gen)

Thunderforce/Lightening Force (Gen)

Blazing Dragons (Playstation)

Speed Devils (Dreamcast)

I can think of more if needed.

Exploit the nostalgia! :D

Alright, I will bite the hype, only because I like watching GameSpot staffers yak over old-ass games. I suggest Doki-Doki Panic (SNES, Japan only), followed by Super Mario Bros. 2 (SNES, Western version).

Interstate 76 would be pretty awesome. Since you might not have a pc around to be able to play that, how about... Homeworld. A third option could be Cool Spot on the Genesis.

Give Sphinx and the Cursed Mummy (I don't care which version) more recognition. Such an underrated game and it's one of my favorites on PS2 (also on XBOX and GameCube). :D

Wow! Such a wide variety of games. I personally love the old Commodore 64 days and remember games like Boulder Dash and even this great game I loved called Jumpman Jr. How about some early PC games to like Corridor 7... that was an awesome game... or even the original Doom and or Wolfenstien 3D. I love those old games and even still have some of them here on my desk! :)

You can still cross fingers. You may want to know that in a recent Wolfenstein Marathon video, Kevin played the first computer game to bear the name "Wolfenstein", and he has an actual Commodore 64. One of the older GameSpot staffers may have a working Commodore Amiga.

I'm not sure these fit the parameters since they are not really console games, but they probably would pose a little bit of a challenge to actually get a hold of, set up and play...
  • The Ancient Art of War
  • Arcticfox
  • Mindwalker
These are amusing to me because I actually played them. The Ancient Art of War may have been the first RTS in North America. Arcticfox is interesting because it is a very early example of polygonal 3D, and used EA's old EOA logo. Mindwalker was just fun and oddly eerie. Edit: Hmm... Since I now see that this is Legacy Platforms, I'll just say N64 Goldeneye and Perfect Dark to hopefully make it topical and mitigate any wrath I had coming otherwise, even though everyone will know those... lol.

now then, lets see: well personally the original kid icarus might be nice because im not entirely sure many people got why those who were excited about the 3ds game were so.

but as a general list : ms.pac-man, adventure, defender / II , Pitfall! (original), paperboy, original goldeneye, another world, speedball, alien breed, starfox, saturn bomberman, final fight, duck hunt, megaman 1 through 3, super metroid, dynamite headdy, b.o.b. , the panzer dragoon series (inc zwai and saga) , alien vs predator (jaguar edition), baku baku animal, burning rangers, nights (less important, but nice to show people why they should be happy for hd nights), sam and max hit the road, metal slug , policenauts, twinbee, D, Deep Fear, enemy zero, Knuckles' Chaotix , myst, god hand, final fantasy 4 or 6, secret of mana, fighters megamx, ristar...

and thats all i can think of now.

I'd like to see more niche games on the show or ones that not as many people would have played compared to the more well known stuff. No reason to play Golden Axe or Streets of Rage when everyone has seen those games and they can be bought for a couple bucks on Steam/XBLA/PSN/etc when people can learn of great alternatives instead.

A lot of my favorite retro games probably wouldn't make for a very interesting watch with me wanting to see games like Warsong, Ogre Battles March of the Black Queen, Ogre Battles 64, Shadowrun, etc so I'll try to list some games I like that would probably be fun to watch or to comment on.

Co-Op: Zombies Ate My Neighbours and Battletoads would probably be fun ones to watch if two people are playing.

Fighting Games: Bushido Blade or Bushido Blade 2 would also be fun to watch for a fighter and show a fighting game that plays a lot differently than most.

Combat racing games: Could be fun to watch, I'd rather see something different than the usual Mario Kart though, something like Rock N Roll Racers or Biker Mice From Mars.

Batman games: With the release of the new Batman movie you could play Batman on the NES or Batman Returns on the SNES, for a usually harder to find one The Adventures of Batman and Robin is a great game I would like to see.

Beat em Up: I'll pretty much second any good beat em up game but for some titles you don't hear about as much I would love to see Knights of the Round and King of Dragons, both also have some RPG elements with better equipment being given to you and leveling up. The Punisher and Power Rangers are also good one.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles The Hyperstone Heist: Like Turtles in Time but not as many people would have seen or heard of it.

Paperboy and/or Paperboy 2: I'd imagine some funny comments can be made playing those games.

Mega Man X3: If anyone has it, can't beat the feeling of finally getting to control Zero.

Suikoden 2: If anyone has it never hurts to introduce more people to the awesomeness of it

You should all get together and play some Power Stone 2! Such a fun party beat-em-up with friends.

Or you can't beat some Metal Slug, Mortal Kombat or Excite Bike.

Hmmm.. My suggestions would be: Fighting -Soul Calibur and Tekken -(the old ones) me and my cousins before plays this and it's still great to play this until now. -Destrega Me and my bro enjoyed playing this before. Each character has it's own unique skills and aura like powers so you can do shoot and throw kicks and punches at the same time. -Def Jam Fight for NY - I still enjoy this game up to now. If you are looking for a game that has real life rappers on it fighting each other, bust them on heads with different weapons and throw them against walls, this is a great one. -Knockout Kings - (the old ones) Me and my bro enjoyed this game cause even if the game is old, you can still relieve some of the classic fighters, arenas, etc. Racing -Gran Tursimo 1 or 2 - The ultimate old school racing game for old school lovers in my opinion. Wide variety of course and tracks to choose from so it's fun even when played alone. -Moto GP - The best motor racing game for hardcore motor racing fans. It makes players feels like they are in real life racing. Action / Adventure -Resident Evil - Nothing is more fun than playing with your friends even if only one is using the controller and watching them shoot zombies and stuff! It is very thrilling and the excitement is there once mysteries or puzzles are solved. -Dino Crisis - Shooting dinosaurs is one of the best old school games has to offer. We normally don't see them in games nowadays so this game is really worth playing if one haven't played it yet. RPG -Final Fantasy Series - From FF7 to FF9 are such a wonderful series. The story rocks and it's still worth playing cause we can relieve those old golden moments by Square Enix. Very interesting characters and levelling up system is makes it really worth playing. -Chrono Trigger - I believe this is one of the oldest RPG games that everyone should play. Sure it doesn't have any good graphics to offer but once you play it you will see that it doesn't matter. -Chrono Cross- Simply my best on the list of old school RPG's. It has lots of characters to choose from, wonderful story, great memorable places and it has everything a die hard old school fan needs. That's it ;)

From what I've heard Amigas weren't very big over in the US. Here in the UK we loved them. I think I might have a couple kicking around somewhere.

Entombed (Atari): A game I kept playing hoping to find an end. I never did.

Plaque Attack (Atari): Space Invaders meets the dentist.

Time Killers (Genesis): One of the first weapon based fighting games. Also one of the strangest.

Weird Dreams (PC/Commodore 64): A strange game I'd like to know more about.

The suggested games are all great, but it really shows the age of the Gamespot userbase! I have to go back much further:

  • Q-Bert (Atari 800)
  • Congo Bongo (Atari 800)
  • Zaxxon (Atari 800)
  • Gorf (Atari 800)
  • River Raid (Atari 800)
  • Gauntlet (Arcade)
  • Operation: Wolf (Arcade)
  • X-Men (Arcade)
  • Moonwalker (Arcade)
  • Time Traveler (Arcade - Hologram)
  • Samurai Shodown (Neo Geo)
  • Magician Lord (Neo Geo)
  • Metal Slug (Neo Geo)
  • World Heroes (Neo Geo)
  • Fester's Quest (NES)
  • Power Blade (NES)
  • R.C. Pro Am (NES)
  • Crystalis (NES)

Every one is a gem, though some are more obscure than others.

Happy gaming,

Boz
