Why would you respect a developer more for not putting in achievements/trophies?
Anyway I think it's mandatory for games on Microsoft and Sony platforms. There are actually some games on Nintendo systems that do have their own achievement like systems. Xenoblade Chronicles springs to mind. They're just self-contained to those particular games though.
If they really bother you that much then simply turn off the notifications and it'll be like they aren't even there. Problem solved.
Not all games have achievements, I just picked up Valkyria Chronicles for the PS3 and it has no trophy/achievement system.
I don't know why you're against it, I kind of like it... Could it be the competition aspect of it?
That's because Sony didn't implement their trophy system until a couple of years after the PS3 came out. Some devs patched them into some of their older games later on.
I don't see anything wrong with having achievements. I think it's a good thing actually, especially if you are a competitive player.
I think they're a cool little optional thing to go for once if you've exhausted all other content in the game, but still want to play it some more. I have nothing against that at all. Personally, I think they're a great feature. I definitely spend more time with certain games than I would have before they were introduced; it lets me appreciate some of the more subtle aspects of the game I might have otherwise ignored.
@Captain_Swosh69: for what reason you despise those? just as much as I can see it in you,you look like you're a retro lover,in those days, achievements are relayed through nearby friends or self-notes. Having a modern game system like PS3/4 means you're stepping into competition,to see if you can unlock them all. I myself am not that crazy when it comes to achievements as I still have my PS3,and that's just a filler, doesn't really affect gameplay experience..also we live in an age of "social media", it means less for quality game and more to entitlement to make someone jealous. I don't entitle myself an achievement prick just because I play games that has achievements on it.
You've always earned achievements in games. Hi-scores/ level completes/ fast times/ no hits/ unlocked extras.
You just now have a shopping list full, with shiny pictures and a point system. These are either like the above. Or they retardedly congratulate pausing the game. . . At anycase, why is it bothering you?
I think it's a great thing & it helps a player explore the game more as it was designed.
"Achievement Unlocked: Chapter 3 Complete!"
Yeah, doesn't help in most cases. The vast majority of achievements are just essentially checkpoints to tell your friends just how far you are officially into the game. Or tell them you wasted time searching for an inane number of collectibles that added nothing to the main experience of the game.
There are several games that do achievements right (Half Life 2: The Orange Box being one of them), but the majority are just a waste of time and effort, and it makes me laugh when people take them remotely seriously.
I remember a day when sitting down with friends in the same room and PROVING you could do something had so much more value.
@kristaok: I see, sometimes being a solo achievement prick might work things out easier,as much as I have experienced it,having a friend sometimes taking it like " oh forget it,what's in it for you if you could unlock it?" sentiment,it's either that you don't trust them or they purposedly trying to take advantage of you, entitlement isn't everything,it's just social status..I can agree with @The_Funyarinpa, retro games in the sixth gen and below don't have such things as online achievements, same goes with them Nintendo(Ninty) titles in the past and present,it's all for personal enjoyment.
Topic says that games shouldn't have achievements...I can see why there are the hates and likes, but I'm in the either side of it
This is really for those who accept the challenge or the "(CHALLENGE ACCEPTED)" people who want to beat the full game (100%). But some people are really playing just for the experience of the story, or just the multiplayer.

What does respect have to do with the presence or lack of achievements in a game ?
