Whenever I'm about to buy a game I'm not sure about, i always look online for reviews. The main place I come is here, althought gamespot is a great place to get reivews for games, the reviews I want are the peoples. But you see, now a days I look at the reviews and this is what I see. "9.9, this game is great you should get it!" Ok seriously people, if your not going to take the time to reivew the game and tell me why its so good, please keep your verbal crap out of this website. Oh sure I run into the good reviews, but I want more then one persons opinion before I make the final purchase. So please, stop wasting my time.
Check out gamerankings.com if you want to see multiple opinions on a game. They take all scores from legitimate magazines and websites and average out the score to give you a better overall picture of a game.
~-~I just glance at the GS score then look for gameplay videos and pics. I have great instincts for games and that's usually all I need. I don't even bother with player reviews though because like you said, so many people think reviews are about opinion and make them like that.~-~
Some people really like games so they just throw up high scores. I usually try to read all the bad reviews on games along with some of the better ones.
A lot of the bad reviews make sense sometimes, even for games I liked I can understand why others might not have liked them as I did.
I know what you mean, how much can you really tell about a game from someone who says, "this game is totally the bomb!!!!1". That is why I don't even go into the members review portion of the site. Most of the time I will talk with friends, or play the demo to decide if I like the game or not.
Another great website is Metacritic, where you can also find movies and music reviews.
