I believe, as apparently Capcom does, that all zombies should be treated equally no matter what their ethnic backround is --- they should all be killed.

Equal Oppertunity slaughter.

But what about all those other video games that tell us to go slaughter whitey?

Word, I don't understand the mind set of people who think that it is. I guess some people think that they're so righteous that they try to find something wrong with everything.

Racism is a part of history. Now if capcom made the main character wear a white sheet, then it might be alittle racist lol,but at the same time it would be really funny.

Why would they change it? That's like changing a Sci-fi game because some people think it's racist against aliens.

I found the whole racist argument stupid, really. I started playing San Andreas, and the fact that I'm Mexican living in Los Angeles and I'm using a black protagonist who could kill cholos....does this give me a right to complain because of the context of my life versus the context of the game.

Anyway, the fact that some liberal journalists started voicing concern over RE5 was unjustified, since the game isn't even out yet. Plus, if it was racist, it shouldn't necessarily be banned, because then you have measure the implied racism the media is concerned about.

Yeah, I heard about this a while ago, it's so stupid. Everything has to be completely politically correct nowadays, or it's an uproar. The game is set in freaking AFRICA for crying out loud! Do you expect there to be a completely diverse selection of zombies running around Africa? No, get over it -.-

This reminds me of something that happened in a town not far away from mine recently...In a nearby school district, some teachers' contracts didn't get renewed for the 2008-2009 school year, SOME (not all) of them being black, and it created a huge uproar -.- I hate politically correctness. I think I'll start causing an uproar every time I'm inconvenienced by someone of another race :/

Yeah, they don't want to allow Africans to be zombies?

...Just another example of people trying to keep the black man down...:P

They're just so negative and looking at it from the wrong angle...it is not like Chris Redfield is walking around in a Klan robe or anything...he's just in part of a country where there was some kinda outbreak (right?) and that place just happens to be in Africa...there's no racial overtones or anything...

Why didn't anyone complain when zombies were all white in resident evil games in the last 10 years? Some stoopid could have said the japanese are racist toward white men.

Seriously, if a game is set in africa, it's normal to have black men around. Where is the racism in that?

This story is actually making me more racist. How about we start affermative aciton in gaming eh? Make all the main heroes black as to not offend the status quo, eh. That'll help social unity (*sarcasm).

By the way, what about Far Cry 2? What about all the Asian people we've been killing in Vietcong?

I'm to angry to stay around here any longer.....

Has the protagonist ever been black? Anyway I'm glad Capcom is going to change it. You change change the fact that the main characters in the series have been white. When I saw the first trailer I thought "awesome!" not "racist" and I'm black, not only that, I'm African. I wish they'd put this much attention to all of the racism going aroun on XBL and PSN instead of this nonsense. Plus, the second main character is black or at least of color so it's all good IMO.

Well Capcom should start make their resident evil with mixed zombies, it would make more since, no more killing just white zombies, no more killing just black, no more killing just asian. There you go the stupid racism is now gone. The story of resident evil is the world infected right? Ever since the new games that they have mix.

Oh ya war games are different.

See, that's the thing. For the anyone to respond negatively towards the game at such an early stage was just outright ridiculous. For all we know, Chris Redfield may run into a few familiar faces in RE5, as it is a sequel after all, so it probably will continue the storyline. Maybe Wesker will make an appearance.

I hope Wesker is in RE5. He's so cool especially that Umbrella specialist who breaks necks (forgot the name). He was so cool too.

Anyway, there are people that are very sensitive so this is bound to happen. For people saying why killing whites isn't really tackled much is because it has become a norm in video games. There are very few games in which you are to kill black people so it gets attention. I think RE5 is the first game to have this.

I'm black and naturally I thought of race when I saw RE5,but it quickly went away and I didnt care about it anymore until it kept being brought up again.I know some people may raise eyebrows at "white guy in military killing blacks"but we need to get over it,it takes place in AFRICA and its a unique setting.

When the game was set in America, you killed Americans, when the game was set in Europe, you killed europeans. Someday the series may go to Asia. People complaining must have never seen a zombie movie. The threat comes from the general population who have been transformed into monsters. It doesn't matter who it is. There is no statement being made about the society's or the individual's morality. The race and setting is more an aesthetic choice. The game could've taken place anywhere. And why would a bunch of Japanese guys want to spread a white supremacist agenda, anyway?

We need to worry about the real issues facing Africans. Are these same people speaking on Zimbabwe. Or Darfur. What about the real Africans killing real Africans. These sanctimonious people got to focus their time and energy on things that really matter.

Peace to Africa.

I was speaking more about the multitude of nationalities and races that have magically entered the small African shanty town since the last trailer. Heck, in nearly every screen they made an effort to have at least 1 white and hispanic zombie in the mob. It actually looked quite ridiculous seeing a bunch of Eminem look-alikes in this environment as if it were some sort of tourist area.

It's hard to blame them though when we all know what a crap storm overly sensitive Americans would inevitably (and had already begun to) raise. It's just sad to see that we can have such a direct influence on their work and vision when it comes to issues like this.

Actually...some of them were. Newsweek's N'Gai Croal often writes about technology, ect. He was probably one of the first people involved in the industry to voice his concerns. Still, you could argue he's just bringing his race into the conflict.

Adam Sessler was also pretty vocal about it...but ironically, in this video Uncharted is being played in the background, a game where whites fight off a lot of non-white people.

I was appalled to find that both N'Gai Croal and Adam Sessler agree that the game is teeming with racist imagery. They don't necessarily believe that the developers are racist, but they were supposedly shocked by gamers' willingness to disregard the overtly racist imagery.

So apparently, this game is the victim of some form of "accidental" racism completely unbeknownst to the developers, but should be in their eyes, recognized as taboo and racist in the heart of every American.

A healthy load of bullcrap to say the least.

People are far too easy to offend in terms of race. If you say anything that could be construed as racially suggestive, people wet their pants over it. The simple fact is that one needs to look at the intent of the message, movie, or game. If it is done with an intent to insult or offend, then I can understand and respect people getting p1ssed off about it. However, if it was something accidental, unintentional, or just plain stupid, you shouldn't burn anyone at the stake over it. I would be very surprised of Capcom decided to make a racial statement with RE5. It's just that where ever the game takes place, there are a lot of black people. The fact that these people are acting crazy because of some virus or mad science is not an implication that they are savages. Hell, the zombies in RE0-CV were all pretty much white. Does that mean all white people are cannibals? What I also find amusing is that something like this is racist, yet the movie 'Crash' is not. Why is that? Perception. It's not racist, because that is not the intent of the film, despite being loaded with racial slurs and content. Simply put, people are far to quick to cry wolf at the first sign of fur. And people are far too sensative when dealing with race. Heck, people have called me racist because I summoned the audacity to call a person from Mexico a Mexican. I should seriously be shot for that, shouldn't I? People, it's 2008; not 1952. Racism isn't near what it used to be. In fact, racial slurs have no meaning to most of the people I know; even if it is against their own race. Chill out, and grow the hell up.

This reminds me of the PSP's 'White vs. Black" ads that were featured in the Netherlands...-_-. Man, it was even brought up in my humanities course where we had to analyze the rhetoric of whether or not it was racist. Some students had no idea what the context of the ad was, so they assumed those billboards were placed in the US.

The problem with this line of thinking, though, is that you can't really prove whether or not the inclusion of those people was something that was a reaction to complaints, or was something that had always been there, or was always planned on being there beforehand.

That's all I'm saying. You're assuming that those inclusions (if they even are inclusions) were influenced by the complaints...when it could be the case that they weren't influenced at all by any sorts of complaints/backlash.

Simple. They want to keep their four major protagonists as the central characters in each game, chris, claire, leon, and jill.
