This reminds me of the PSP's 'White vs. Black" ads that were featured in the Netherlands...-_-. Man, it was even brought up in my humanities course where we had to analyze the rhetoric of whether or not it was racist. Some students had no idea what the context of the ad was, so they assumed those billboards were placed in the US.viewtiful26

isnt that game like the "spy vs. spy" thing?

People are far too easy to offend in terms of race. If you say anything that could be construed as racially suggestive, people wet their pants over it. The simple fact is that one needs to look at the intent of the message, movie, or game. If it is done with an intent to insult or offend, then I can understand and respect people getting p1ssed off about it. However, if it was something accidental, unintentional, or just plain stupid, you shouldn't burn anyone at the stake over it. I would be very surprised of Capcom decided to make a racial statement with RE5. It's just that where ever the game takes place, there are a lot of black people. The fact that these people are acting crazy because of some virus or mad science is not an implication that they are savages. Hell, the zombies in RE0-CV were all pretty much white. Does that mean all white people are cannibals? What I also find amusing is that something like this is racist, yet the movie 'Crash' is not. Why is that? Perception. It's not racist, because that is not the intent of the film, despite being loaded with racial slurs and content. Simply put, people are far to quick to cry wolf at the first sign of fur. And people are far too sensative when dealing with race. Heck, people have called me racist because I summoned the audacity to call a person from Mexico a Mexican. I should seriously be shot for that, shouldn't I? People, it's 2008; not 1952. Racism isn't near what it used to be. In fact, racial slurs have no meaning to most of the people I know; even if it is against their own race. Chill out, and grow the hell up.

[QUOTE="Mash_Affect"][QUOTE="Skylock00"]

[QUOTE="Mash_Affect"]I would applaud Capcom, if I actually believed them. Everyone who's seen the latest trailer knows they're changing it.Skylock00

You mean because of the new character, or something else?

How can you even prove that the new character, or anything else was added/changed as a reaction to people calling the game racist?

I was speaking more about the multitude of nationalities and races that have magically entered the small African shanty town since the last trailer. Heck, in nearly every screen they made an effort to have at least 1 white and hispanic zombie in the mob. It actually looked quite ridiculous seeing a bunch of Eminem look-alikes in this environment as if it were some sort of tourist area.

It's hard to blame them though when we all know what a crap storm overly sensitive Americans would inevitably (and had already begun to) raise. It's just sad to see that we can have such a direct influence on their work and vision when it comes to issues like this.

The problem with this line of thinking, though, is that you can't really prove whether or not the inclusion of those people was something that was a reaction to complaints, or was something that had always been there, or was always planned on being there beforehand.

That's all I'm saying. You're assuming that those inclusions (if they even are inclusions) were influenced by the complaints...when it could be the case that they weren't influenced at all by any sorts of complaints/backlash.

*Shrug* Seemed pretty obvious to me as well as to other analysts of the trailer like 1up and Gametrailers. The initial trailer didn't have a single out of place white zombie in sight. The very next trailer following the hooplah, and now we have a warm, caring rainbow of nationalities all living together in this small African village. Isn't that special?

I believe, as apparently Capcom does, that all zombies should be treated equally no matter what their ethnic backround is --- they should all be killed. Lord_Daemon

This guy and Black Zero know what they're talking about. Seriously... RE 4 zombies were Spaniards, does that mean every single Spanish people should be causing uproars and ''expressing their worries'' at this racism ? And anyways, these days racial stuff is less considered, it's more about ethnicity.

[QUOTE="gamingqueen"]Isn't it strange that most of those who called RE5 a racist game aren't gamers?viewtiful26

Actually...some of them were. Newsweek's N'Gai Croal often writes about technology, ect. He was probably one of the first people involved in the industry to voice his concerns. Still, you could argue he's just bringing his race into the conflict.

Adam Sessler was also pretty vocal about it...but ironically, in this video Uncharted is being played in the background, a game where whites fight off a lot of non-white people.

http://www.gametrailers.com/player/usermovies/204192.html

Sessler is a sell out, and will do just about anything to get attention these days. In the early days of X-Play, he would have been on the Anti-Politically correct side, disputing any claims of racism in the game, because it's set in AFRICA -.- Now, he just wants to say/do whatever he can to get noticed, because his show is lame nowadays :/

I have a blog about this topic if anyone wants to see it, but I plan to change it after looking through this topic(It's my first one, and probably poorly written though). This whole controversy is really just stupid. Today, the majority of people are not racist;instead, they are scared of being racist. Capcom is doing the right thing by just walking past this crap. Instead of just trying to sneak past a sleeping lion, eventually hitting a stone on the ground, they are just walking out of it's den. In my blog, I was trying to respect the nay-sayers' opinion, but now I see it is just conjecture. The only reason these topics exist is because some people just had to get all upset over nothing, connecting a single dot to nothing. If people could just get past racism, we can all just live in harmony. Not many people care about race anymore. It is only those people who keep the word racism out who keep this stuff alive. Those people just need to get over it, or this stuff won't die.

Good for them. There is no racism in that game. I hate people who call racism on everything more than racism itself. I don't see anyone complaining about killing white people in games. Maybe that should be my new job, professional complainer.

How is that racist? We've been killing white people in every game, cept for RE4, and the Spanish didn't care. I've killed asians in games, and I even don't care, and I'M asian! Come on people! I don't think that white people really care that they've been killed in almost every video game ever! Who cares if they're black, doesn't matter what color they are, they're still zombies(Las Plagas?)!

I think the REAL problem is a much larger cause for alarm. Why are all these people sticking up for zombie rights? Are these the creators of the zombiepocalypse? If there was an actual zombie outbreak, would these people need to have some sort of council to decide who is a zombie and who we can and can't shoot in the head?

I find their campaign for zombie equality... disturbing.

Good. I always thought those claims of racism were absurd. It's crap like that that's probably why nobody sets games in Africa in the first place.

Obviously Resident Evil 4 was racist against Spanish people.

He could tell by looking at previous RE games that Capcom is not racist. All Capcom wanted to do with RE games is match real life settings. Maybe he wanted to attract readers you know they'd do anything to sell.

If I were Capcom, I wouldn't change anything about the game and wait til someone files a lawsuit and burn their asses with money as a compensation. Individuals stand no chance against companies especially big companies like Capcom in lawsuits.

According to modern anthropology they're not.

They only wanted to start in a whole new scenario, and the fact they choose Africa, I think is great. It don't makes me feel more excited about killing africans because at the end they all are zombies, and the simple task of killing zombies excites me.

Well I don't who who these people are and I don't care what they may think. They Do not think for me, they do not tell me what to buy and when to buy it. These folks obviously have a lot of time on their hands. May be they should do basket weaving or knitting. If they really want to conguerr racial issues. They should protest on Shaun Bell's behalf, or black man killed for trying to pull out his wallet. These men were killed FOR REAL, where were they then and where are they now. Tell them to get a life and let us enjoy ours.

100%. I don't doubt for a second that they changed it - all one needs to do is watch the first trailer and then the latest one to compare them. Here is a recent screenshot of RE5 that has (from right to left) 1. the arm of a black zombie out of frame; 2. a Mexican zombie; 3. a white zombie obscured behind #3; 4. an Asian zombie; 5. a white zombie obscured behind #4; 5. a white zombie; 6. a black zombie obscured behind #5; 7. Chris Redfield.

Two black zombies out of a possible six - in Africa. Compare to the first trailer. No, Capcom didn't change it at all!

I don't think it's racist at all that RE5 has you killing black people. In all the other games we have played, we've killed white people. Upon millions of games having white people getting killed, this pops up, having black instead, and now everyone thinks it's racist.

Are white people punching bags in video games or something?

The question is : Is it ok to kill Germans,Russians,Asians but no Africans? Are African people more worth so they can´t be shot without a problem with he society? Why is it ok to kill black american Gangsters?

If a"black Cris Redfield" whould kill white people in Africas, that´s what I call racism. If A "european Chris Redfield" whould run through France or Germany and kill-off black people (whouldn´t be much i germany) that whould be racism. But Africans in Africa???Shure not.

-based publication Xbox World 360 revealed that the game takes place in a unnamed African country near a line of active volcanoes that stretch across Eritrea, Ethiopia, and Kenya, where volcanic activity is threatening to release a previously dormant virusWikipedia

You can't have a storyline like that set in a MEDC (more economically developed country), as volcanoes can be managed a lot easier --I guess this is partly a justification of why it was set in Africa.

Whether or not things changed is not the point, though. Even if these were changes (since these could've been zombie designs that were already in process in advance), the problem I have with the claim you and others are making is that they made changes in reaction to complaints, which really can't be proven.

Furthermore, I like how you claim that two of the zombies in the picture are Mexican and Asian, when they could simply be derived from Northern African nations, which tend to be lighter in complextion (such as Berbers).

Not all Africans are black.

Racism and enthocentrism in natural. I walk down the street and people lock their doors when they look at me or they turn the opposite direction and walk away until I'm out of distance and then they presume their course. I'm black and I've seen this all my life, no big surprise if nothing changes in 100 years.

Of course it can't be proven. The only way it can be proven is if Capcom comes out and says they changed it, which is something that is never going to happen. Sometimes you just have to look at the evidence displayed in front of you and come to your own conclusion.

Were Capcom's "white people zombie" designs still such a work in progress during the first trailer that they had to wait for the next trailer, which suspiciously comes immediately after the voracious accusations of racism, to show off the true vision of the game, which in fact did involve an unrealistic depiction of a multi-racial African shanty town like you say? I guess we'll never know. However, it seems unlikely to logical minds.

Well, of course it can't be proven...Capcom is hardly going to admit it. Seems like the obvious answer to the sudden mix-up of zombies that have now been blatantly placed in the game, however.

I'm aware of the Berbers and those zombies don't strike me as such, however it is possible.

So, they can insult us whites on a daily basis, yet when we use their words or insult them, bam, all this controversy and racism.

And now, they're making a huge deal just because you are killing blacks in a game? What about the millions of whites you kill in other games?Hell, I've seen blacks in high school complaining just because someone said "black"

Seriously, capcom did nothing wrong. Stop crying blacks.

I found the whole racist argument stupid, really. I started playing San Andreas, and the fact that I'm Mexican living in Los Angeles and I'm using a black protagonist who could kill cholos....does this give me a right to complain because of the context of my life versus the context of the game.

Anyway, the fact that some liberal journalists started voicing concern over RE5 was unjustified, since the game isn't even out yet. Plus, if it was racist, it shouldn't necessarily be banned, because then you have measure the implied racism the media is concerned about.

viewtiful26

How about the racism inherent in calling the Japanese developers' values racist?

[QUOTE="Mash_Affect"]*Shrug* Seemed pretty obvious to me as well as to other analysts of the trailer like 1up and Gametrailers. The initial trailer didn't have a single out of place white zombie in sight. The very next trailer following the hooplah, and now we have a warm, caring rainbow of nationalities all living together in this small African village. Isn't that special?Angel_Belial

Yeah...those don't look like people that I'd expect to see in Africa...though, it is possible...

But that makes me curious...has it been confirmed that the game will be taking place in Africa only? Perhaps Chris Redfield will be traveling around the world...or is the game only set in Africa?

So, they can insult us whites on a daily basis, yet when we use their words or insult them, bam, all this controversy and racism.

And now, they're making a huge deal just because you are killing blacks in a game? What about the millions of whites you kill in other games?Hell, I've seen blacks in high school complaining just because someone said "black"

Seriously, capcom did nothing wrong. Stop crying blacks.

White people are complaining about this game just as much if not moreso than blacks are. Typically because they want to appear just and sensitive about racial issues, when in fact they haven't been well-informed about this circumstance at all.

Regardless, that screenshot is in the African setting portion of the game.

Hmmm...maybe Umbrella or someone is experimenting and seeing how the virus affects different races...and for some reason, had to bring people of different races to Africa...I don't know; I'm running out of excuses...

At least Capcom isn't stupid to change anything. Seriously? It's a video game that is about zombie-killing and survival. It's not the KKK, alright? In previous games they killed white zombies, asian zombies, and other ethnicities that have turned into zombie, but loh and behold, we get to black zombies, and everybody loses their ****.
