These two fuckers. Neither one ever just shuts the hell up to let you play the game and they both have the most worthless, grating personalities.
Nico Bellic comes to mind, a character in a game which mechanics could not support his points of view, constructed in such a way that I wanted to reach into the game and strangle him. Atleast it always gave the added bonus for getting shot because, well I wanted to do that myself If I could (hey GTA if you continue to insist making so unlikable player characters, that also has the depth of a sheet of paper, include a "suicide" butten NeXT time, yes?
Prophet from Far Cry 3, If I hear that drugged haze sounding "The Alpha Zeth" Again I will snap, that character almost made me stop the game halfway through just because I could'nt bear him.
Kratos. Enough said, no explanation needed, right?
It is rare to make a character that irks me, and it is almost impossible to make me dislike a game due to it. I can manage NPCs in the game World just fine, but when forced to be playing the most unlikable unrelatable character imaginable then sure, they can ruin a game for mr.
Emil in Tales of Symphonia: Dawn of the New World. I had a few other issues with the game, but Emil was really not helping.
Also Hope from FF13.
Bayonetta. I have no interest to play the game because of it.
i was thinking the same thing. I couldn't stand her personality and voice. A terrible person. Reminded me mostly of why i didn't like God of War either, i hated Kratos, what a piece of crap.
Tingle never really ruined any game for me... but he has given me a few nightmares.
I can't really think of any one character who ruined a game for me... either they're just isolated and I don't like them (Desmond, the cardboard ****), or it's most or all of the characters I don't like (FF13) which does actually ruin the game.

Also cloud and aerith from ff7. And most of the side characters from chrono cross.

crysis 3 ;) but yeah both him and the old psycho were so uninteresting and tediously dull. just like the game.
cj from san andreas had the wit and charisma of a wet lettuce, although in terms of annoying there are few game characters that can come close to san andreas's catalina. jesus christ those missions with her were excruciating
Gears of War, Jake and new female characters in Gears 3. They are just baggage, Jake is just a black guy replacement for the cole train when you don't play as him and when he isn't there.

I couldn't really think of anything but yeah Prophet's voice actor made me want to shoot him in the face. The sound of his voice and the voice acting especially was terrible. Enjoyed the gameplay though. Also, the guy who voiced Caius from FF 13-2 (also voiced the guy from Nier) ruined every scene he was in in that game. I hate that guys voice.

Who the **** is Prophet from FarCry 3????
@PimpHand_Gamer
Cole Phelps had plenty of Personality compared to other Adventure Game Heroes....
More importantly, even if he didn't, it would've have only ruined the game FOR YOU and others like you, which is the case for just about every title mentioned in this thread....

Crysis 3, my thoughts wandered ;)
No character is bad enough to ruin an entire game on their own. Anybody who says otherwise needs to get some perspective.
I guess you have never seen the "first" Star Wars movie, Jar Jar pretty much fits the glove. If a character can ruin an entire movie, why not a a game?

Star Wars: Episode 1 sucked regardless of Jar Jar.

That might be the case for you and you might value gameplay over story.
But for us who value story over gameplay, a bad character certainly can make even a decent gameplay game bad.
I'm currently playing Assassin's Creed III and Connor is Altair-tier in terms of a quality protagonist. The game itself is also pretty bad, but Connor stinks too.

Except that Altair is by far the best protagonist in the first 3 AC games (5 in total).

Perhaps you could elaborate about his personality then. The word "plenty" is rather vague.

Ezio > Altair

I never got the hate for Connor, I always felt that he should've been written a bit better, but that overall he was well developed. Aside from being pissy with Achilles I understood his frustration...idk I just really connected with him. I will agree Ezio is the best of the three though. I do like Altair though even though he is very short spoken in 1 (though AC 2 fleshed him out much more) and I am going through AC:R so I'm hoping to really have him fleshed out there.
oh on topic....quite a few in Resident Evil Revelations were very annoying. Adam in Other:M was never realized (but that whole story was awful and a missed opportunity). Thats it off the top of my head.
Can't really think of a character that completely ruins a game for me. Sure they can be annoying, but it's never enough to kill the experience for me. I tune them out half the time. Closest character to be like that for me is Navi from Ocarina of Time.
It just clicked, I love Spyro games but all the characters were annoying as hell
Cole from Gears of War was cheesy so was Baird (the blonde hair dude?)
What about in terms of gameplay? I'm sure many escort mission characters have resulted in broken controllers over the years.
TIDUS
Yeah, "Tidus Androgynus" (see what I did there?) was pretty whiny and obnoxious, but he didn't ruin the game for me because the character had some development and growth over the course of the game.

I'm right there with you. While the core gameplay was solid, I never beat the original Bayonetta because I found the character to be so obnoxious I didn't want to keep playing. She's annoying at best and a hyper sexualized charicature of what's wrong with the gaming industry at worst. Everything about the character design screamed "PLEASE, WE ARE DESPERATE TO START A NEW IP AND WE THINK THE BEST WAY TO DO THAT IS TO PANDER TO HORNY TEENAGERS!". Bayonetta evokes the old Chris Rock argument of "I love rap music but I'm tired of defending it" for me. Everytime I try to convince someone that video games are indeed a form of art on par with television or movies, a naked Bayonetta comes flying in attacking monsters with stripper pole dance moves and stomping on enemies with a giant high-heeled boot made out of her pubes to destroy any shred of credibility the "video games as art" argument has.
