Well, you might say that PC gaming is losing a bit of flavor it once had with PC developers spreading to consoles, but PC gaming is still going strong. Every time a new generation starts, the focus is on the new consoles, but with technological progress, the PC then comes into full sway. PC gaming has its issues, but I find it silly that you mention hardware problems as if the console world is devoid of such issues - I hope you realize that the Xbox 360 and PS2 are the worst pieces of consumer electronics, like, ever. Installs and patches have become a normal occurance in console gaming. Family members want to check e-mail? Now you're just reaching, I suppose your family members never watch TV, they just browse their inboxes all day. PC will always have more than enough worthwhile games and even a lot of multiplatform titles are far superior on PC for a multitude of reasons.
Consoles are ever-creeping into areas once thought could only be traveled by PC's. With increasingly better graphics, keyboards, social networks, and all the other extras, could consoles wipe out the PC gaming market? Lets face it, gaming on a PC is a pain in the ass. Software can take a long time to install, hardware conflicts can cause repeated, sometimes irreconcileable problems, monitors and graphics adaptors have to be upgraded every couple years and your wife/kids/siblings are always pushing you out to check their email. It always feels like a step-sister trying to fit her foot in a glass slipper. PC's are primarily for business and that is how the major software companies make their money. Games are kind of an afterthought. PC Gaming future bleak or exciting?Kingmoonraiser
PC's aren't a pain in the ass - they are simply a much more complex machine that demands attention from the user. One of the biggests pros of PC gaming to me IS that complexity. I enjoy having more control at my fingertips as to how the game will run.I enjoy being able to go into config files and tweak to my hearts content. I enjoy OC'ing to get a bit more ooomph out of my hardware. And finally, I enjoy playing the most technologically advanced, cutting edge games on the market.
Every generation the consoles get more advanced, but the PC marches on, at usually a quicker rate. Love it or hate it, its here to stay.
I think that Consoles might overwhelm PC gaming. As long as there are people who want to invest $2,000 in super gaming machines, PC gaming can still hold on by a thread. The question is, is that thread strong enough?
Let's look at ADVANTAGES OF PC GAMING:
If your short on cash, you can just use your PC, instead of having to buy a whole seperate console.
If you're willing to shell out the big bucks (i.e. $2,000 or more) then you are going to have one hell of a gaming monster. If you wanna blow another wad, you can get a big ^$$ HD monitor (like 30" or even more) then your really set.
As demonstrated by games like Crysis, If your willing to invest in said $4,000+ (don't forget that huge HD monitor) setup, graphics and gameplay can kick console butt, but what else would you expect from a $2,000+ rig?
PC games are often cheaper than console games.
Okey, now lets look at the DISADVANTAGES OF PC GAMING:
Most people don't want to shell out $2,000+ for a gaming rig so that they can kick console ^$$.
Who wants to play games using a mouse and keybord? Not me, it's just lame. I much prefer the the controller, with triggers, analog sticks, and convenient, easy-to-find buttons.
If you don't invest in said ^$$ kicking rig, your likely to have problems. I tried to play Lost Planet on my PC, and my graphics card couldn't handle it. The lighting is what killed it. Like when your fighting the first boss, inside the weird round thing, or on top of a mountain, it would just freeze up and go really slowly and jerkily. It was unplayable. And I have an aftermarket ATI Raidion card.
All those long load times. It took over an hour to load Lost Planet. It was doing some kind of updating thing. Real pain in the ^$$.
You can't play in HD without buying an HD monitor, which, unlike HDTVs, is non-essential for everyday use, whereas you buy an HDTV becuase it is far better, and you use it's HD-ness whenever you use it. Whereas with a monitor, you only really get the full effect when gaming.
And I've noticed, if you like multi-player, the online rooms are pretty baren.
And lastly, I would really rather play games on my 42" 1080P plasma TV with the low-glare screen than my little, what? Maybe 15" or so monitor, wouldn't you?
Okey, Lets look at the ADVANTAGES OF CONSOLE GAMING:
It's cheaper than a gaming computer.
The controllers are far better than a mouse and keybord.
Supperior graphics unless you have said expensive gaming computer.
Your whole HDD is for gaming, so it has plenty of room, and isn't cluttered with other stuff, as on a PC.
Tons and tons of people play online everyday.
If you have a PS3 (:D) you can play blueray games.
You get to play on that big HDTV.
You can play Co-Op.
Okey, now let's look at the DISADVANTAGES OF CONSOLE GAMING:
Not as good as that uber gaming PC.
Consoles sometimes suffer large hardware failures.
That's about all I can think of. If you think of other things, I'll edit them in.
Upinflames, are you saying that consoles have as many hardware issues as PC's?? That is a totally untrue statement. Since I have bought my 360, I have had hardly any problems. Also, the cost of upgrading a PC and keeping it updated is tremendous compared to a $400 console that keeps you running for a few years.Kingmoonraiser
Couldnt I say the same for 360 and PS3? In a few years, the 360 will be replaced with another system that blows it's technical specs away and same for the PS3.
As for the arguement of upgrading, well that depends on how you look at it. A new PC game is expected to have at least decent optimization, so through a PC gamer's perspective he could easily keep his graphics card longer than a consoles lifespan while still being able to play the latest games for the PC taking into account that it is at least "optimized".
Look at Orange Box, I dont need a next-gen videocard to play that game well and neither does Crysis.

you lost it when you said who wants to play with a keyboard/mouse. it is the most accurate and fast option available. nothing else comes close. you also at least doubled the cost of a good gaming pc. nonsense.
$4000+ for a good gaming PC? WTF, man?! I bought my whole computer 1.5 years ago for $2000 and it had pretty much one of the best graphics cards out at that time.Angry_Beaver
"At the time" being key words. Go on Dells website and start to build a gaming PC. If you want it to be top-of-the-line, it could easily cost $4,000.

-Where do you get the idea that building a computer 3k to 4k?
-Control is based on preference and no matter how you look at it, in a competitve scenario the mouse/keyboard setup blows the joystick control away and that is fact.
-Lost Planet was kinda unoptimized and no you dont need a kick*** rig to play it.
-Again load times depend on the game with at least a decent rig.
-Tons of people play online in PC games, more so in fact that the PC online population is larger than it's console counterpart. Yeah some games are empty but I can also look at several 360 games and tell myself the same thing.
-Yeah I would rather play on my whatever inch HDTV...thats why I can connect my PC to it.
Look, im not dissing you in anymeans but im just saying that your post is evident that your a little bit bias against the PC and in someways you have no idea what your talking about.

Well consoles certainly have a strong advantage over the PC, but the PC is still quite strong. Although you can't get games like Assasins Creed on the PC, but with COD4 you do. It depends really on what you are looking for. I buy PC games, and those PC games are only available in PC format. So PC games are still strong but consoles would have a strong advantage, I used to use my PC for games, but pretty soon I will be getting a new games console like the PS3 or the Xbox 360 because the multiplayer is better in my view on consoles because I perfer the controllers than a keyboard. Also you get new consoles being released roughly every year. But PC's still are quite strong, but the advantage goes to the consoles really. PC games would be around for a bit more, but it won't be pushed out once and for all.
These threads are so pointless, how is it that you can have only one computer in your house? In my house there desktops and two laptops, everyone I know has atleast two computers in their house. Just because you enjoy playing in the living room dosen't mean I do, I hate it. People are always there talking, moving infront of the screen, if I am playing something stupid like say the ME sex scene I rather have them not be there, they always want to wach the best TV...etc...etc I don't know how you can stand it.
Anyways some of the arguments hear are so pointless that I am not going to refute them point for point, I mean extra cost to buying an HD monitor? Nearly every monitor sold is HD, you are going to have to look for a monitor that is less than 1280x720, I mean my laptop is higher than that. If they are selling you a monitor that is $100 more expensive and they are going "its more expensive because its HD!" then you are getting ripped off.

I'm saying that there are hardware issues in both PC and console gaming which makes your point about PC hardware moot. You didn't have any problems with your 360, that's great for you, but if you look around you'll be hard-pressed to find anyone who hasn't had problems or doesn't know someone whose 360 crapped out. The damn thing reportedly has a 33% failure rate, for heaven's sake. It's basically the sole reason why I don't have one yet (along with the fact that there wasn't a proper price drop since launch, of course).
Mechworrior, please stop discussing PC gaming as you're obviously horribly ill-informed about it.
HD monitors...
Nobody plays PC online games...
Nobody wants to play with keyboard/mouse...
Dell...
and Mechworrior, after reading your post I am 100% sure you have never even touched a PC gae in your life....
a. Their is no such thing as a non-HD monitor.
b. KB/M are considered to be better for FPS/RTS and several other generes...
c. are you actually buying a gaming PC from dell?
d. Nobody plays PC games online? maybe lost planet cause it was so bad on the PC...but go check out BF2, CSS, COD4, TF2...etc.
in fact, just about everything in your post was flat out wrong.
Any console game ever made as much money as World of Warcraft?
I rest my case.

Super Mario Series maybe?? H3 has made a bit of coin.

I'd say the failure rate of the XB360 is closer to 50-70% and possibly nearly 100% for consoles manufactured within the first year. It's a shame because everything else about the XB360 rocks but the hardware is very unstable, which is strange given how sturdy the original XB was.
Just wanted to add some advantage to PC gaming that were missed.
True backwards compatibility. And, I'm not just talking, "Well, all games from the last generation are compatible." No, you can play games that are decades old.
Mods. So not only are you getting the game cheaper, you're getting more game for your money. In addition, they can make the game play more like you want it to. CoD and CoD2 mods made those games much more enjoyable online.

Yeah, rumor has it that the fail rate for the launch 360's is nearly 100% over time due to a huge design error with the GPU (it runs too hot causing the circuit board under it to warp from the heat). Supposedly the new ones have a decent fail rate though, only 7-10%, though I don't know if that's just for the RROD (supposedly the fail rates for the DVD drives are 10% as well).
Just wanted to add some advantage to PC gaming that were missed.

Only to a certain extent though. For really old games you usually have to set-up an OS emulator in order to get them to run.
Let me play devils advocate for a change. The shift that PC games in comparison to it's console counterpart has drastically changed where games like Unreal Tournament 3 sold more on the console than the PC counterpart and Call of Duty 4 *might* be of prime suspect too where it might have sold more on the console. Its also starting to become glaringly appearant that the most recent games are starting to throw out the ideas of optimization thus at this point you need a decent computer to play modern games.
Also id like to say that the differentiating factor between the PC and consoles has seem to be slimming down where we're starting to see that its possible to play mods for a console game (Again ill bring up UT3 for the PS3). Although its not to the extent of PC games, the consoles are starting to get there.
I dont think the consoles are towering over the PC and vice-versa, if the two respectable platforms were to compete in a race than it would be close.
No becuase the pc can adavnce a bit faster than the conosle whilst the pc is using moer upto date tech while the console are trying to push there hardware to its max in its secound year of life whislt the pc has tech pushing being pushed every year.
I think the Reason why U R saying this is because the recent games like Bioshock,Call Of Duty 4 sold more copies on Consoles........well I'd say PC Gaming will never die & threads like this one will also never die.........because people think that Consoles could push PC out of the Box.....This is not true.....Games are developed on the PC........so its natural for them to be released on the PC...........
What i think about PC Gaming VS Consoles is that a true PC Gamer like me is a HardCore Gamer........Consoles on the other hand will appeal to the massess........I like the challenge of looking after my PC,Installing a Game,Tweaking with the Graphic Settings..........
The Popularity of the consoles will definitely increase infact I'll recommend consoles for my mom & dad if they wanna play Call Of Duty 4........Consoles will make the Game Industry more easily enjoyable by the massess.......But a PC is a PC.......It will never die but the number of people playing Games on the PC may decrease due to Consoles.................
By the way I'm also thinking of buying the Xbox 360 Elite Edition instead of Upgrading my PC..........
PC GAMING WILL NEVER DIE:twisted:

PC gaming won't die out, at least not for a long time. But I think that consoles will become more prominent than PC gaming in other parts of the world, like it is in the US.The_SandRock
Totally Agreeeeeeeeee8)
Dude, threads like this pop up quite a bit and are usually pretty dumb. Usually it turns into a fight between people who live in a cave and believe that a PC costs $4000 and the crazy PC people who think putting a computer together yourself isn't the least bit confusing for everybody.
But on that note... I do need to get a new PC and want to spend about $1000 for just the PC. I know if I go to Best Buy or Circuit City, I'll get a bad deal. I could pay somebody else to put it together, but even then I have no idea what to do when it comes to what processor to get, what grapics card to get, etc. It's tough to even look that stuff up on the internet since most of the websites I find usually give information that is at least a year old. Basically, buying a PC can be very confusing for those of us who don't keep up with PC hardware.
Also, if anybody has any advice on what to do or where to even do research on what to buy, that would be awesome!

This is the most iconic of the hardware review sites and it contains info both for the tech monkey and casual reader. If you ARE a more casual reader make sure not to get bogged down in the tech speak and just read the summaries/look at the comparative benchmarks.
There seems to be a feeling among gamers that the PC gamers are more "hardcore" than the console gamers, whatever that means. Are the PC gamers getting game tattoos and starting fights at cybercafes. This perception probably comes from the fact that the demographic of console players is younger by average. I have had my ass handed to be by a 12 year old while playing Halo far too many times. From the consolers I know, they seem to spend a lot more time gaming than the PC gamers that I know. That would make them more hardcore....if that is a good thing.
I see the strongest attribute for pc games is the independent/underground/mods. How often do you see 6 nerds getting together in the Ukraine and putting together a console game....NEVER. While in PC gaming, it happens all the time. Well not exactly the Ukrainian thing, but you know what I mean. We are starting to see some modding communities on consoles, but nothing compared to the PC world.
Also, it is not about a gaming PC costing $4000. Even $1000 is still twice the price.....and less headaches.
