I just finished playing my first run through in the game "Prey", and it made me wonder.

With current technology, the best graphics cards, best ram (also maxed), processors etc. Could we have an open world game that is seamless with absolutely no load times at all besides the entry ones to get into the game?

For example in "Prey" you have the ship built into sections, each section is huge and very detailed but requires load times between them, very long load times (ps4). In "Skyrim" you have similar things, same with GTA if you go to your apartment or house.

So again, with current tech, is it possible to have these games all be seamless and run with no load times what so ever?

Ps.

I understand we make games for the masses, but that's my point in a way, if we CAN do this with the best current technology, then that would imply that when this current tech is old tech, say 5 years, we will all have seamless games, therefore giving me an idea of how long we have till that experience come to fruition.

THANKS FOR READING!

@jimy1475: Hmmm, crazy to read that about a Wii game. But not realllyy what i'm looking for.

I want to know if with Current tech they could make a game like PREY or SKYRIM without any load times other than the initial entry one to get into the game.

Not sure this belongs to Off-Topic but anyway. The Witcher 3 did a fantastic job of creating a seamless world. You can enter Novigrad, the largest city in the game, and all of its buildings, that are accessible, without a single loading screen. I think this has set a bar for all games of this caliber to surpass. The next TES better not feature any more "cities" with like 20 people living in them and all behind a loading screen.

@johnd13: You know, I played the Witcher, and didn't really remember many load screens, but I haven't played it in a hot minute. If that's true then that's impressive because it is a very large open world.

I wonder what makes it different from other open world games that can't do that.

You probably need to exactly say what you want. But the answer is yes, easily. Skyrim, btw, already has mods to get rid of a lot of loading screens. So your questions is pretty much already answered. It is possible, you can do it right now, just download the open cities mod for Skyrim

It’s possible now, but developers are lazy.

@IndependenceYou: I suppose their engine for one. And the will to commit resources and time to achieve a seamless open world. There's a reason CD Projekt is praised so much - they give great care towards creating an amazing product that people will love.

It is possible, just difficult. Games that progressively load during gameplay have been around since Soul Reaver on the PS1.

If you were to build a computer with enough physical RAM to store the entire game's install directory, I guess it would be theoretically possible.

There are already several open world games with no loading times. Only time you need to watch loading screen on them, is when you fast travel. Examples are GTAV and most new Ubisoft games.

And you dont need super PC to achieve this, as GTAV had no loading times even on xbox 360.

Key is efficient hard drive usage. Some devs excel at it, some dont.

I think, we are at the threshold.
