Now when I say roots I don't just mean bringing back zombies, limited ammo, closed corridors, and things of that nature. I'm talking about bringing back the pre-determined camera angles and puzzle based gameplay while making updates that make the game a little more realistic (such as enemies following you into other rooms and mansion's with more than one restroom).

I ask because these days it seems in the video game industry, what's old is new again. Case in point: Street Fighter IV, Mario Brothers, Donkey Kong, and Mortal Kombat. All of these legacy titles returned to the format that helped them become a legacy in the first place so it seems likely that Capcom would strongly consider moving back towards the old format. Of course at the same time all the games I just mentioned were 2D games so it might not apply to a 3D game like Resident Evil.

Still I'm not here to try to convince you one way or another. I'm more interested in seeing how people would feel about this and weather or not this is an angle that Capcom would consider for Resident Evil 6.

Sorry for the slip up about tank controls.

If they did I would start getting into Resident Evil again. I did not like 4 and never played 5.

Hell no! Old Resident Evil sucked. The controls and camera were awful. It's as simple as that. RE4 is by far the best game in the series. RE5 kinda sucked though. Going back to having limited ammo, a more horror aspect and having puzzles again is great, but you are out of your mind if you think going back to the tank controls and terrible fixed camera angles is a good idea.

RE still has tank controls. The controls aren't as difficult as orienting your head about "forward" being relative is.

The controls are still good in the newer games. Plus if they do a new RE I expect them to go one step further and have moving and shooting at the same time ala Dead Space. At the end of the day, it would be a terrible move to ditch the controls and camera they have now for what the original games had, wouldn't you agree?

Classic Resident Evil is much better than the new style, which feels so far away from the previous RE titles that it probably would have been better off being its own stand alone game, therefore we would have both the new style of gameplay and the classic Resident Evil style.

And, Resident Evil 5 wasn't very good. How dare they let a new character help kill Wesker and not Barry Burton. Why was Jill blonde? What were they thinking!

I liked 4 and 5 for their gameplay mechanics but I want old RE back. Zombie noises in the distance, creepy music, animals breaking through windows scaring the crap out of you.

I think it would be cool if RE went back to a slower-paced survival horror type of game. I'm not sure that they would have to go back to the static camera and tank controls, but they definitely should make it less of an action game. In defense of tank controls, though, I think it added to the gameplay experience.

No. It can not and should not. Resident Evil 4 made the series what it needed to be for last generation. Nobody would have played Resident Evil 4 if it was still using tech from a generation earlier. Resident Evil 5 tried to keep advancing the series, but failed hard because of the stupid computer-controlled co op partner.

no. re4 is proof that not only can the series control competitently, but also give genuine scares rather than rely on cheap pre-planned jumps. re5 messed up that balance by straying too far into shooter territory, but re4 took simple intuitive mechanics and masterfully played with them throughout the game.

I love the camera of the original games. The controls are still "tank controls." It's the camera that's different. Get it? In any case, I'd prefer they make a hybrid of new and old.

THey should focus on the survival more. In RE4 and 5 that gave you some much ammo that you did not need to fear or worry about using too much or facing a bose with nothing on you.

Yes it could, and I would really like it to.

But for all practical purposes it probably won't.

People love shotting stuff, and Resident Evil 4 and 5 supplied them with plenty of it.

If its any consolation the series has been going kind of back and forth lately. Resident Evil 4 came out and ruined the series, then we got a glorious return to form in Resident Evil Outbreak File #2. Then it got stupid again when Resident Evil 5 came out.

Resident Evil has been in every genre. Survival Horror, third person shooter, RPG/strategy, first person shooter, rail shooter, and the list goes on.

But I would argue it did survival horror best, and I would really like to see more of it.

Just let me run while I shoot. If I see zombies trying to kill me I am going to be strafing like a madman. And I hate the fact that they designed the AI to actually take advantage of that development flaw in many areas of the game.

The other thing I didn't like was the controls obviously. And of course the AI takes advantage of your sloooooow aiming by doing that stupid swaying motion. Like the zombie is actually going to dodge a bullet... That is just annoying when you're playing on pro because they are super stingy with the ammo.

I want RE to be what it used to be, with a few tweaks. I want the dark, horror feel it used to have ( the feel that was absent in 5). I want the zombies to come back, I could tolerate the parasites in 4 but they have overstayed their welcome. I want the ammo scavenging back, it is very important ot a survival horror game.

But I want them to keep the over-the-shoulder mechanic from RE4. It made saving ammo so much easier and it felt like you were actually there, rather than some guy staring at a TV watching your character struggle to run around a corner.

My RE dream would be a remake of RE1 and RE0 with the over-the-shoulder mechanic of RE4. Also Iam willing to swallow a **** plot twist to bring back Wesker.

Aside from the first RE none of them had limited ammo or very many puzzles at all, heck in RE2 i think there was one actual puzzle, RE3 was better but then i had 145 shotgun shells in addition to my other weapons.

The only old RE that was really like what people seem to remember old RE being is the first one.

RE4 perfected the formula IMO, no other RE can compare, I hated 5 though, they took it one step too far. Now, I wouldn't mind seeing a RE in the style of RE4 but slower paced and more puzzle centric with more scares and a spookier environment,, I'd buy that.

The way I remember it the series was on it's last legs and becoming very stale...then RE4 saved it. The difference with all the franchises that the OP mentioned is they never really staled, they became irrelevant for a while because of other types of games. Unlike RE which made itself obselete. I think there is certainly a place for a slower, older style Resident Evil, but at the same time they would do well to keep much of what improved the series to begin with.

I actually just got through playing ReMake and I couldn't believe how crisp it looked (which is part of what prompted me to originally make the thread). To my surprise A lot of the scenes were actually on par with games I've seen for PS3 and 360. The only part though that the game couldn't match was the in game animations seeing as how the last generation is comparatively limited. Such is advantage of the old Resident Evil engines, as that type of game allowed the environments to be much more detailed. I figured that if they could do that on Gamecube then the potential for the PS3 and 360 would be exponentially better.

I also came across this video on YouTube. I have no idea what it's from but it does an amazing job of catching the essence of the original Resident Evils. A real treat for fans of the mansion incident.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xbxi888WOug

Either way for me, I just want to see the themes from the original games to come back. Dark lighting, zombies, somewhat complex puzzles, backtracking, and limited ammo, the core aspects that drew me to Resident Evil in the first place I'd also appreciate it if they re did the story. If anything has gone stale it's the story. Things seemed better when we knew very little about Umbrella, the virus, and the key players behind everything. That was one of my problems with Resident Evil 0 explaining the outbreak. Some guy that was killed in 1960 or something with leeches making up his body seemed like to much of a reach for me. Then you have Wesker as some weird mastermind and to me the whole thing has started to get kind of boring. Code Veronica was the last real narrative that I found intriguing and that was released somewhere around 9 years ago.

I still think REmake and RE2 were the best in the series. If they could take the elements of the REmake and RE2, while mixing them with RE4 style gameplay, it would really bring the series back. RE5 was a complete letdown to be honest. It was a decent action game, but felt nothing like the old school RE games that made the series so popular. Hopefully RE6 can really surprise us.

Slow zombies should never return. Or running zombies for that matter because as a dead corpse most bodily funtions quite working there should never be a zomibe that can run.

I would say yes to the general atmosphere of suspense/horror film of the first 2 titles. I love Resident Evil 2 to death but progress waits for no one and wishing going back to fixed camera angles and tank controls is short of madman's ramblings. Fixed camera and tank control where due to the limitations of the hardware of the time and because the designers literally made the game with those control hindrances to make the whole experience that much more tense. We are far pass the time of making game where premeditated design flaws should dominate the way a character moves on a environment. Code Veronica had full 3D environments but its tank controls made me die more than one time too many. It is bad enough to fight a horde of T-Virus monstrosities to have the controls be an enemy as well. Resident Evil 4 was a big step forward but still being not able to move and shoot at the same time is a flaw that has to disappear once and for all. I want fear, apprehension and uncertainty to be the basis whatever new Resident Evil, with good puzzles thrown in as well, something that makes honor to "Survival Horror" not 3rd Person Perspective Action Shooter flick. We must not forget the past, but always moving forward.

Old Resident Evil was for people that liked limited inventory with limited weapons and ammo plus puzzle solving. I prefer the old resident evil. If you didn't know how to execute a quick turn around it did have tank controls.

I think RE should return to zombies (over body snatchers or whatever), keep the full 3D environment of RE4 and RE5, keep strafing, add moving while shooting, give more ammo, and throw an overwhelming amount of zombies at you and make it truly feel like the zombie apocalypse

I think that Resident Evil will stray further and further away from horror. They see that the top selling and highest-played are consistently FPS clones, so that is what they will continue to do. Evolve the game into another Halo, Gears of War, Call of Duty, etc.
