Anyone who can't understand why Crysis 2 gets hate from the PC crowd has obviously never played Crysis 1. Crysis 2 is an obvious downgrade in so many ways:
- You only get two suit modes, so kiss on-the-fly adaptive combat goodbye. You can either cloak when you want to hide or use armor mode when fighting. That's it. In Crysis 1 you had speed for outmaneuvering enemies or escaping, strength for super-accurate shooting (hip firing was as accurate as ADS, and if you went ADS + strength you had virtually no recoil or weapon sway), armor mode when you found yourself in a very ugly situation and needed to buy a few extra seconds (unlike Crysis 2 where armor made you practically invincible, in Crysis 1 the armor mode will only absorb a few gunshots; it's best used for when there's imminent heavy damage coming your way that you can't avoid, such as a grenade landing at your feet). Then there were the suit mode combos, such as speed + strength jumping.
- Crysis 2's arsenal was pitiful compared to Crysis 1. In Crysis 1 you hand claymores, landmines, and C4 for use as traps. You had several different types of grenades. Each weapon had at least two different firing modes, and some had tertiary firing modes that could be customized (assault rifle could fire tranquilizer darts or grenades for example). Each weapon could be further customized with several different types of scopes and ammo, as well as other addons like silencers, flashlights, lasers, underbarrel grenade launchers, etc. In Crysis 2 you get a weapon and if you want to customize it, well, **** you, you'll have to find another weapon laying around with the attachement you want.
- The fights in Crysis 1 were a lot more organic and interesting. You could attack objectives any number of ways. For example, if there's an enemy base you could pick everyone off from miles away with a sniper rifle. You could sneak in cloaked and not kill anyone. You could steal an armored gun mounted jeep, drive it into the base, get in the turret, and start spraying. Or you could take that same jeep, cloak while inside, speed as fast you could, crash through the gate, aim it at a building, jump out, and watch as the jeep crashes into the building and explodes as a makeshift bomb (which, btw, would most likely destroy the building). Then when the enemies come to investigate you could toss a grenade to kill them all, spray to kill them all, or simply sneak off while their attention is held elsewhere. In Crysis 2 all you get is "go down this line to point A and fight off a wave of enemies. Along the way you can run/sneak past enemies or kill them".
- In Crysis 2 most of the interesting action isn't delievered through actual gameplay, but rather just a bunch of a real-time events. It's basically "go here, kill these guys, QUICK PRESS X TO LOOK AT THIS COOL THING HAPPENING, now go here and HEY WHAT'S THAT, PRESS X TO LOOK AT THIS COOL THING HAPPENING".
- And of course there's the graphics. Crysis 2, when it was released, looked terrible compared to Crysis 1. Even with the DX11 patch and high res texture pack the game still doesn't look as good as Crysis 1.
