In all honesty did anyone actually enjoy Dead island? I just got out of a cooperative game, and sweet jesus it has to be the most clunky, ugly, glitchy, sluggish piece of shit game I've played in recent years, how can anyone enjoy this? NPC's where running into walls and glitching forcing us to restart missions, cutscene animations are laughable, the camera is wonky, the graphics are borderline pathetic. So did any of you guys like it?

I only had one encounter with a glitch - the one where you just lose all your weapons. It was right at a checkpoint where there was no way to go back and loot more. I had to go into a set-piece unarmed. Got through it, though. Personally, I had fun with the game. More fun than the last 2 Dead Risings, which are just total bores. Skipped Riptide, though. One can only take so many zombie games.

I don't know what you played it on but I played it on PS3 and it's awesome, had no glitches that I recall. The facial animations and cut scenes are kinda lame but besides that it's the best zombie game I played all gen, chopping up hordes of zombies with custom built weapons on a big island is a blast. Both SP and Co-op are great fun with lots to do. Mind you I did play the GOTY Edition so I guess by then the bugs were fixed.

3 Friends, a weekend and two bottles of Vodka made the game insanely fun for us.

That said, Sober, It's a decent game with some faults that could've been great if they'd focus much more on realism and making it more gritty.

the original Dead Island was riddled with glitches and you could clearly tell by the studdering animation and clunky graphics in some areas that it was both unfinished and rushed.

Riptide on the other hand remains my personal favorite zombie killing game of all time, it was basically what the original was meant to be, they more less fixed every problem the first game had, polished it to perfection, and changed the story a little to make it a sequel instead of just releasing a majorly patched version of the original.

the original sucks. the sequel is epic.

I thought it was a decent game. I don't remember it being as buggy and people always describe it as. The combat is a bit wonky, but it just takes some time to get used to. It's actually kind of fun once you get the hang of it. Still, the game does get repetitive and consequently a bit dull at times. However, I enjoyed it overall despite its flaws.

That's weird because most people didn't like the sequel as much. Or I guess I should say they hated it more, since people really seem to dislike Dead Island. I just finished up with Riptide and it felt like an expansion pack more than anything. The locations were smaller, the game was shorter, and everything about it was largely unchanged from the first game. That said, I still didn't hate Riptide, but for me it definitely wasn't better than the first game.

well.. i personally have no clue how you came to the conclusions you mentioned cause i still play Riptide and will continue to do so for years to come, i love the game but to each there own i suppose. imo its amazing and i wish there were more games like it, its very rare nowadays to see a first person style game that doesn't just focus on multiplayer. :/

@shangtsung7: Yeah, to each their own. I'm just surprised if find it interesting you liked the second game much more when it's more or less the same game. People claim both games to be very glitchy when I didn't have a whole lot of issues with either game in that area. Maybe it's just been too long since I played the original, but Riptide played exactly as I remembered the first one playing. There was definitely more to do in Dead Island along with more open world to explore. In general, people seem to think less of Riptide, so I'm definitely not alone in my opinion. You're one of the only people I've seen that actually prefers Riptide over the original.

I enjoyed what time I spent with it. I'm a sucker for zombie games and I liked the melee combat. The analog attack scheme was a lot of fun. Breaking the big zombie monsters arms with the targeted attacks was great fun.

But I'll be the first to admit that the premise wasn't strong enough to carry the whole game. I played through, and enjoyed, about the first level. Got started on the second and lost interest super quick. Once the novelty of the attack style wore off it was all said and done.

What about Fallout, Skyrim, Portal and Bioshock? they're all first person "shooters" that dont have any multiplayer. And yes you can shoot magic out of your rod in Skyrim.

you claim there is more to do, bigger sandbox, and the sequel plays the same as the original? see thats where i am puzzled beyond words at your conclusion, imo you are wrong on so many levels i don't even know where to begin, not only are there tons more side missions in Riptide as well as the sandbox dwarfing the original in comparison but there are dozens more combat options, John Morgon, the new character alone has a running kick move which you don't even need to unlock that sends zombies flying in the direction you hit them, Logan has a rushing move you can unlock that does more less the same but with a melee weapon, and all these charging moves can be upgraded to do tons of damage in the process, once upgraded to max you can literally perform a running melee attack that will knock a zombies limbs off, killing it and sending it flying in a bloody mass in the process! its freakin hilarious! couldn't do anything close to that in the original! hell i've gone through the entire game with John Morgon using nothing but fists! he can be upgraded so beastly op'ed that he doesn't even need a weapon! perhaps you just didn't spend enough time experimenting with the game's new mechanics cause comparing Riptide to the original Dead Island is like comparing Super Mario Bros on nes to Super Mario World on snes.

i said its "very rare" for a first person view game to not focus solely on multiplayer, not that its unheard of, tho sadly as time progresses i have no doubt we will see less and less of sp based first person style games. :(

Maybe, but regardless I have a feeling we will still have games that focus on both just as well, take Halo as example ( Halo 4 isnt the best example as only its campaign was good)

They're very story focused games, that rely on their massive sci fi universe to help piece together their tale, kinda like star wars I guess. I personally love the gameplay, as it strives away from most typical FPS's out there.

well.. usually when i hear "online multiplayer" mentioned with a game, especially a fps game i tend to avoid it as that almost always means the length of the story mode will be so short that it isn't worth bothering with, so perhaps i judged the series too harshly on that one assumption, i may have to give the Halo series another try and just not go into it with that thought in mind. ;)

Yep, making a silly zombie game more realistic and gritty is all it needs to be a great game. Not polishing up the game, fixing bugs, writing better characters, or adding more depth and variety to the gameplay.

@shangtsung7: That's fair I suppose. I played as Sam B both times through so my experience was fairly the same. However, I'm still certain there's more content in Dead Island. I did everything in both games as far as main missions, side missions, and collectibles go. The side missions in Riptide mainly consists of "saving" people and going on additional fetch quests. I easily spent more time completing everything in Dead Island.

We clearly are looking at the game from different perspectives, and it's a good thing for you that you see more positives in Riptide, but you aren't going to find many people that agree with you. I'm not going to say your opinion is wrong or anything, because you make your case, though I'm still going to disagree with almost everything you're saying.

well.. usually when i hear "online multiplayer" mentioned with a game, especially a fps game i tend to avoid it as that almost always means the length of the story mode will be so short that it isn't worth bothering with, so perhaps i judged the series too harshly on that one assumption, i may have to give the Halo series another try and just not go into it with that thought in mind. ;)

Good to see open minded gamers such as yourself exist, way too many closed minded gamers are out there man! haha

I thought it was a decent game. I don't remember it being as buggy and people always describe it as. The combat is a bit wonky, but it just takes some time to get used to. It's actually kind of fun once you get the hang of it. Still, the game does get repetitive and consequently a bit dull at times. However, I enjoyed it overall despite its flaws.

the original sucks. the sequel is epic.

What about Fallout, Skyrim, Portal and Bioshock? they're all first person "shooters" that dont have any multiplayer. And yes you can shoot magic out of your rod in Skyrim.

i said its "very rare" for a first person view game to not focus solely on multiplayer, not that its unheard of, tho sadly as time progresses i have no doubt we will see less and less of sp based first person style games. :(

Maybe, but regardless I have a feeling we will still have games that focus on both just as well, take Halo as example ( Halo 4 isnt the best example as only its campaign was good)

I beat 1 and got halfway through 2. I'm not a huge fan of "loot" game and I barely give a crap about multiplayer, but the core combat mechanics were alright (breaking limbs with blunt weapons was really fun) and the island resort was a beautiful environment to explore.
