It was one of the first stories in video games that really grabbed me, but I was not super impressed when I first played it. It honestly wouldn't even make my top 25 RPGs right now, and would barely be in my top 50. It's really not that an exceptional of a game outside of the characters and the story imo.
Its still at my top, i think becuase i played it so young that it exposed to me so many things that i havent felt in a game over these years
I would suggest you try it, it's ok for some time to kill just never though it was, and presently (not sure if I did that right) not too impressive. I mean it won;t have you dressing up in costumes or anything, but I would give it a go, way better than Final Fantasy 8 which I have no words for.Never even played it. I want to though.

At the time it was released, it was like the Broadway Joe of RPG's. Big action, big lights, big plays. All that flashy stuff couldn't save it from a lot of its (imo) downfalls, but it was a pretty good game. Not the best ever, not the best FF, and not the best RPG in the 90's, but yeah it's a good game.
Can't ignore the impact it had on the game market either. Huge.
Unfortunately I played FFVII about two-years after it originally came out in the states, and by then there were a plethora of other great PS1 JRPGS out. However, after playing many of these, none even come close to comparing how awesome FFVII is. FFVII is the single best traditional JRPG I have ever played, period!
Yeah, I love FF VII. Just look at my FFVII Save.

It was definitely the most hyped when it was original release and it was awesome. I think a lot of people thought it was the best ever when it was released and still do.

PSP? XBox? PC?I played Final Fantasy 7 to substitute Final Fantasy 8. The reason I bought FF7 was because I played demo of FF8 which I thought was fantastic at the time. I went to Electronics Boutique and asked for FF8 and they said it wasn't in yet, so they handed me FF7 and told me I should play this one first. At first sight I thought the game looked really goofy. The big blocky arms, the flat feet, and the way they moved all felt really goofy. I always wondered how much better the game would have looked if the models in the world looked like the models in battle mode. It would have been a lot better to look at but the games story and battle system eventually made up for the blocky models when you broke into Shinras building. I didn't really start liking the game until Clouds story in that little town outside of Midgar when he tells the story about Neibelheim. Also I have no idea if I am spelling these locations correctly :P I haven't played the game in ages. Anyway FF7 is no doubt a solid Jrpg. It is still one of my favorites but I wouldn't put it on top of some of the others. Final Fantasy 4, 8, 7, 9.
I think FF7 is the best game of all time. Haters hate on it due to it's popularity, but you can see that there was so much effort put into every area. From story to music the game is beautiful. I play it every 4 year (long enough break that it feels realitively fresh in some parts) and I will do so until the day I die. If ever there was a game that blew me away, it was FF7.
At realease I thought it was the best damn thing ever, mostly because I was young and impressionable.
I'm currently replaying it, and the dialogue can be extremely dodgy at times, which can have a huge negative effect on JRPGs specifically (which may be because of bad translation or could simply just be bad writing). Cloud's character also shows inconsistency within the first few hours of the game, where no real character development has even been established. So now, no, not really.
JRPG label or not, FF7 was and still is a great game. When it was released, yes I did think it was great but I don't know about the best.

Is it available on arcade?
It comes with an FF game. Sony has the DD version on lock. There was no such thing as a "JRPG" when Final Fantasy VII released. Back then it was called a "console RPG".
Either way, when I first played FF VII back in 1997, in all honesty, I thought it was the best video game (RPG or not) I had ever played up until that time...
Yes way back in 1997 when all we had was the original playstation. Final Fantasy 7 was the best JRPG at that time. FF7 was a big deal back then. Even Mike liked it. Which was amazing since he wasn't the usual JRPG player. I thought it was Meh at the time. It took some time for me to get into this game.
In 1997 Final Fantasy was a really huge deal.

It comes with an FF game. Sony has the DD version on lock. Why'd you change the quote to make it look like I said that? :|Meh sounds about right. I first played it in the mid 2000's, and for a while it was the only JRPG that I'd ever played without completing (that title now goes to Xenogears). Nothing in the game really stood out as somethingI really liked. Even after beating it and replaying it a few times over the years there's still a long list of RPGs I prefer over it.
My brother and sister definitely thought it was probably the greatest [j]rpg ever at release. Many westerners did. When I played it in high school, I was not impressed. It's a good game, but I have definitely played other rpgs that are "better." I never did play it at launch though because I was too young.
No the term did exist, even in japan. Which basically separated them already at that point. There was no such thing as a "JRPG" when Final Fantasy VII released. Back then it was called a "console RPG".

One of the most disappointing games I've ever played. HeirrenThat's a new one.
It seemed amazing back in the day but it hasn't aged very well at all, particularly the art design (the character models look extremely bad). FF8 actually has aged alot better in that respect despite being worse than FF7 on balance because of the sh!tty junction system.
