I was wondering how many people even read manuals before playing a game?
Because i am the only one i know that reads them... At least some parts of it!

I don't really ever read them before I play the game, but I do always read them. Usually as quick reading material while using the bathroom.
I used to read manuals when they were actually worth something.RK-MaraThis. Most of the time they're just 12 pages now, with 4 of them just being credits.
If it is worthwhile. Some manuals are very-well written, and manage to entertain apart from merely informing. Especially manuals from Rare and Nintendo games are often worthwhile. I think Leigh Loveday writes the Rare manuals, and anybody who's read the mail section on Rare's official website knows what a hero he is.
I read them only when I'm bored and either don't feel like turning on the game at the moment, or can't yet for some reason (like if someone else is using the tv) So I open up the manual to see if there is anything interesting in it.
I don't, because they often contain spoilers. I don't even read the back of the box.Black_Knight_00Wow, I thought I was cautios about spoilers, lol. Only game I can think of that has even aslight spoiler on the back of box I think I is Tales of symphonia. But everyone wants to know more or less about a game then others before playing I guess.
I used to always read my manuals before playing the game (was sort of a ritual for me). However, that was back when games still had manuals worth reading. You know, back when the manual would have character descriptions, weapons/skills descriptions, level descriptions, background information, plot points, hints, etc...basically when they were interesting. It also helped that until the latter half of last gen most games didn't have tutorial modes or stages so you had to read the manual unless you were willing to spend the first level or two figuring out everything for yourself (and even then there would be occasional times where you wouldn't realize you had a certain skill or ability in the game until the game was almost over).
Unfortunately, because so few people are willing to read developers felt the need to throw in mandatory tutorial levels which has resulted both in those aggrevatingly boring tutorial stages where the fourth wall just gets blown to hell ("hey, this is supposed to be a real world and all, but PRESS THE X BUTTON to jump!"). It also resulted in the death of the useful instruction manual, so now most manuals are just a few pages long and contain only one sheet that gives the button layout for the controller, another sheet for health/safety info, and the rest of it is just credits.
even x-box 360 game manuals? yes. i might read one just for the sake of reading and learn something about the game i am about to play. for the sake of reading, once again, you can go back to them months later and think, wow.
manuals of course can be helpful if you are stuck in a game too.
I always do.
However, I generally read it on my way back from a game purchase, and mainly to read about the characters in the game, and any descriptions you wouldn't usually get in-game. The controls for most games are more or less the same so unlike a new electronics good, there's really no other reason to read the manual.
Sometimes. Though not as often as I used to, since most modern games give you the instructions as you play.

Strange i have never seen such a short manual... Which game was it for???
My copy of CoD4 has an eight page manual with two pages of legal agreements.[QUOTE="Black_Knight_00"]I don't, because they often contain spoilers. I don't even watch the trailers for the games I really want, like Metal Gear and Heavy Rain :P As for shooters or RPGs, most of the time they have a weapons list or a character list in the manual, which ruins the fun for me. I want to jump in the game knowing nothing.
but don't you find yourself lost on the story somtimes? or do you not play games for story either, you just play to play?
I don't ever read the manual unless I somehow cannot figure out how to do something basic. like I need help on the battle system, or cannot figure out what button preforms a certain action
I'll be honest I usually don't even play single player games anymore. They just can't keep my attention long enough.but don't you find yourself lost on the story somtimes? or do you not play games for story either, you just play to play?

I used to read manuals when they were actually worth something.RK-MaraThis. I recently bought Vampire the masquerade: redemption from GOG.com and that has the good old pc game manuals that i loved. very much in detail of all the stats, clans, lore and history of the game with also bits about the enemies and items. it's very informative other than just going over the controls. i actually miss manuals that have things like that

It just makes sense to read the manual..
However much a gamer already knows, there's always something they've overlooked.
I like reading the manuals, sometimes it gives you important plot elements that aren't talked about in the game. I feel that making manuals is becoming a lost art. Why don't they make involved ones anymore, like with Wario Land 4? It's a shame.
Never did, never will. I jump into the game and figure the controls and story out myself. Most games have a tutorial level now anyways, so you don't really need a manual.
My dad reads the manual of the game to figure out EVERYTHING before he plays and I tell him you don't need to but he does anyways...
