I'm with you on this RAGNAROK old chum, don't waste too much time with these guys, especially the "status shuffle" guy.

anyhow, I had the same experience you did with both FF13 and FF13-2.

as for the original question, I'd say yes, SquareSoft (as in pre-Enix merger) made plenty of games that I liked just as much if not better than SOME of the final fantasies.
that said, "Final Fantasy VII" remains one of my all-time favorite games. rpg or otherwise.

I like how both of you don't even at least give your opinion on how 13-2 was bad.

after experiencing several conversations with you on other threads, I don't feel the need to defend my opinion to you, because you're generally next to impossible to talk with, to be quite honest.

In terms of BOTH final fantasy XIII and XIII-2, I didn't much care for the story or characters, and I generally dislike the battle system.
(I really couldn't care less if you disagree, so if you're going to try to tell me those aspects were good, don't bother)

The battle system was a joke.... more like an AUTO battle system rather than a battle system. Just flip combat types and hit go then come back and change if needed, repeat for hours. So simple your mom could do it. Then ask yourself wtf am I playing a straight forward RPG?! wait a second.... straight forward combat system, story & path, omg! Also the story was so stupid I lost interests in the first hour, this was one of the only FF games I had to force myself to enjoy hoping it'd get better, sadly it sucked that much.

Pop in FF8 and the card battling system alone makes FF13 look like crap.

They died after FFX, and stabbed themselves in the heart with FF13, FF12 was better but the story was so ZZZz. Everything went totally down hill once they became squar enix. Most of their games now are a joke compared to their older games and western rpgs. I mean come on we've got more advanced technology now and they can't even come close to their ps1 games. Right now all they're doing is riding the name. For any hardcore gamers this is clearly visible.

I lost you when you said Final Fantasy X, X is what killed the franchise which for me started dying slowly every game when at and after 7. Lol talk about bad story and stolen battle systems. Also I lost you at technology, technology has nothing to do with game quality, FFXiii and FFXiii-2 have more complex leveling systems, more quests, more off-game content, have better technical graphics, took a huge budget to make, use advanced cutscenes. So tech wise they long surpassed their old games. I mean Final Fantasy X-2 has better technology than 7 8 and 9, but I doubt anyone here would actually say X-2 is good. At all. I really, really hope no one here likes x-2.

This whole thread is a sinking ship catastrophe of a time, but hey, what the heck? I've got a few minutes to spare drowning.

As far as Final Fantasy XIII-2 goes, I enjoyed the more addictive elements of the game (killing stuff, getting strong, unlocking new locations) quite a bit, and though I did not bother with any of the postgame content, I can honestly say I had a pretty good time with the game. That being said--the story was a dreadful abomination, with characters with which I had absolutely no reason to empathize, and by the time I reached the twist ending, I reacted more or less with a big bowl of indifference.

With Final Fantasy XIII, I actually thought that game had some of the most compelling characters in the series until somewhere around the end of Chapter 8 or Chapter 9. Basically, that's the point in the game where each character's personal problems is resolved and they have undergone a full character arc. Unfortunately... there's still a big chunk of game left. Like Gran Pulse and the final battles etc. And that's when the story falls apart. The villains are all appallingly one-dimensional; heck, even Leonhart in FFII made for a more compelling villain. The "Tube" was also a pain, though Gran Pulse alleviated that a little, and the loss of towns was really disheartening. Still, FFXIII is another game I can sincerely say I enjoyed, though it could have been so much better.

Now, do I think Square has made better games than Final Fantasy? Well, that's a really loaded question. Like everybody else, I'm just going to say I think some Square games are better than the releases in the FF series that I don't like as much. My favorite Final Fantasy game is VI, followed by IV, followed by V or IX. I think Final Fantasy VI, Final Fantasy Tactics, and Xenogears all have some of the best stories ever told in a video game, perhaps in ascending order as far as concept goes, but descending order as far as actual execution goes. I also think Chrono Trigger is one of the overall greatest video games ever made. My point that I'm getting at is--trying to rank these games is a pretty frivolous process. There are many, many games in the Square catalogue of terrific merits matched by terrific detriments, and that's the point of developing a diverse catalogue in the first place. Can't please everyone, won't try to please everyone, but please everybody with something or another.

Square has definitely seen better days, but they're trying. The total revamp of FFXIV (which, for what it's worth, I've never played) is evidence of that. I am a very jaded gamer, but I haven't lost faith in Square. There may be a lot of corporate heads just trying to squeeze money out of the company, but I believe there are many people there who still just want to make good video games. It's of course up to them whether or not that actually happens.

There are of games Square has made that are better than FF, but until people stop buying the garbage they sell labelled 'Final Fantasy' Square will continue releasing them.

Did you know that Xiii, Xii, Xi, Tactics, and CC were not even supposed to be FF games but they slapped the name on near the last of the development time? They have games that sell (SAGA series is an example), at this rate they might as well just slap FF on Dragon Quest and call it Final Fantasy Quest Monsters, or Final Fantasy Quest X, the twilight Saga.

XII was always called Final Fantasy as far as I remember and the development of that thing lasted forever. I followed that game quite closely.
