I feel exactly the same. It seems a lot of the 3D Platformers like this annoy me, because a lot of objects are off the beaten path so it just takes too much freaking time, killing the fun factor. Most 2D platformers also involve collecting, but it doesn't bother me as much because it's usually on the path you're already on anyways so you just get the stuff as you do your normal gameplay.
Pac-Man World games on PS2/XBox/Gamecube are great 3D platformers that you should check. It does have collecting items involved, but not way off the beaten path. It's all on the way. So it's fun.

Exactly, thats why I did not care for games like Donky Kong 64 and what not. The emphasis is not on the timing and on the general mechanics of a what a platformer should be.....
Well collecting stuff is a inseperable part of the genre. Just as you collected coins in Mario you collected rings in Sonic, bananas in Donkey Kong and so on. DK64 gets often criticized for the amount of collecting it contains but I personally enjoyed it. It's not like you have to collect every banana out there to progress.

Why am I not surprised with your statements? Again lacking of any knowledge. We are not talking about coins, but actual items to progress in the game. For example you needed bananas to collect to even progress to a Boss Fight in the boss fights and some times the level design was horrendous that this was just an unneccesary for a boss fight. Games like DoRemi Fantasy:Milons Doki Doki Fantasy have fantastic design, but placing collectibles and making essential collectible items that are neccessary to progress that are well...hidden as if they ae secret items, thats just bad placement.
Finding 100 freakin items in Tak (the yorbels or whatever) is driving me INSANE (I only have 60)
But only some games drive me nuts with this issue
the only reason I don't mind banjo is because they don't expect you to have very many notes for the note doors.I do, collecting musical notes in banjo kazooie is BS

No, the level design in DK64 was great. If you disagree, fine.
And I'm here to discuss games not to argue with you. So from now on I will just ignore your flame posts.

Its not flaming its correcting your always consitently incorrect statements. Actually you do have to correct banannas to progress in that game, where as you have too. Again incorrect

Agreed. I don't mind collecting stuff for progression, exploring the worlds can sometimes be fun, but at times it just feels like filler instead of actual gameplay. One of the reasons I enjoy the Ratchet and Clank series so much is because it hits a nice balance. You save to collect some stuff to progress the story and gameplay but it's never overbearing (at least IMO) but after everything is over and the main story/levels are completed there is a whole **** load of stuff to collect and do afterwards if you want.Try some of the spyro 3D games on the ps1. There is collecting involved if your gunnin for 100% but most of the main things that you need to find whether its Dragon Statues, Talimans, or Eggs (although in Spyro 2 and 3 the Talismans, orbs, and Eggs got a little creative) are not off the beaten path.
I love platformers but it seems like in most of them, you have to collect a bunch of stuff. I just like the overall feel of platformers, and i like the diversity of the gameplay in many of them too, but it just seems that sometimes collecting ruins the game a bit for me. I get that some of it is necessary but too much is just tedious. I was playing Donkey Kong 64 a bit a go, and I freaking love that game! But I get so frustrated at all the dumb shiit you have to find, in order for the story to move on. Does anyone else share this hatred? Oh and a recommendation of platformers that don't involve a **** of collecting would be nice.gmoneybball91
If there's a point to collecting the things that you have to collect, there's nothing wrong. If they're just there, they're probably there to divert attention from flaws in other areas of the game.
