Is it really? :?

Yes, it is the all mighty Duke Nukem Forever, the game we thought was gone "forever" and would not see the light of day is here and due to *ahem* "critical aclaim" the game looks to be one of the worst or at least most disappointing games. Or is it? :| Let's face facts, did we really have big expectations for this game:question:

  1. The game took 15 years to develop. Even games like Mass Effect 2, Half Life 2, Grand Theft Auto 4, Metal Gear Solid 4, or even Super Mario Galaxy 1 + 2 could not live up to that kind of hype if they had been in development that long. We all knew that the game would disappoint because it has been in development for years and years now. Constantly getting revamped, getting new stuff thrown into, etc. etc.
  2. Duke Nukem is a clone of Doom so the fact that we had high hopes for a clone (and now apparently a clone of many other FPSs) also meant that we were asking for it.
  3. We've evolved. We all expect more from FPSs, something new and different (which Activision is blind to but still), and lets face it. What were we getting with this game? An FPS with Duke humor. Period. That's it. We got nothing more or less out of it.

So, with these facts, can we still call Duke Nukem Forever the most disappointing game of 2011? :? I mean, we all knew it wouldn't live up to 15 years of standards and considering that we were hyping up over a cloned FPS of Doom should also indicate how we all knew this wouldn't make a triumphent return for Duke. Can we still call it the most disappointing? Well...yes and no.

No for the above reasons and yes that we did have some sort of expectation for the game and it did not exceed them at all. I mean every time someone had expectations it seemed DNF would destroy it.

"Can I have a game with some Duke humor?" says the Duke fan. "Sure! But remember, we still haven't grown up out of the 1990's so we're still thinking you all like that kind of humor even though you grew up from it. Not to mention the jokes are somewhat tasteless and bland," says Gearbox

"OK? Can I have a Duke Nukem game?" says the loyal Duke Fan."Sure! But we're limiting you to 2 weapons, giving you a regenerating health bar, and taking away the jetpack. Oh and some of the weapons from previous titles are not in the game...so there's that," says the greedy Gearbox

"Seriously? OK. Fine. Can I have a stupid, freaking bland, normal FPS that has no punches whatsoever?" says the now peeved Duke fan "Sure! But you'll have to put up with platforming and driving sections," says the troll faced Gearbox

"Son of a..." says the ex-Duke Fan "I know...aren't we great?" says the evil Gearbox.

So that is a question I ponder about. Is Duke Nukem Forever the most disappointing game of 2011 or not? On one hand we all knew it would disappoint because nothing can live up to 15 years of hype and we were hyping up over a clone of another great FPS. Or is it a disappointment because we did have some expectations and clearly they were not met. :|

What do you think?

Neh, the game isnt great but its not bad either. If someone thought that the 15 year dev cycle would result in a good game I think they were very naive. It took so long to make not because it was being polished, it took so long because there were so many problems everyone knows that so in my opinion many people set themselves up for disapointment.

To me the most disapointing game, although once more not a bad game, is Dragon Age 2. I did not like the direction in which the game went at all. A more recent game that was a great disapointment atleast to me was Call of Juarez The Cartel. The first two games were great games with an underused setting and then the devs had to go and mess everything up.

Actually I liked it... I haven't played it for too long, but from what I have seen so far it is funny (silly-funny, but funny, if you know what I mean) and that it stayed faithful to that adolescent and carefree style of the old Duke Nukem games.

I don't know exactly what gamers expected from Duke Nukem Forever so that I can tell if they were disappointed or not. If they expected a modern shooter, like Gears of War, or Uncharted, I'm sure this game can't satisfy them. Personally I expected a nostalgic game with a lot of "dukeisms" (old and new ones). :P and a decent game to support it of course. I still don't know if it succeeded, but my first impression from it is positive.

It's a good game in my eyes. It's just sad how quickly people moved on from it. All that "time."

First and foremost, the dialog portion between the Duke fan and Gearbox should just... just be erased. Gearbox put the pieces together and released the game 3D Realms created. The design choices, such as regenerating health and a 2 weapon system wasn't their idea. Everyone blames Gearbox, they didn't have the game that long. In fact, I'm beyond excited to see a Duke game from Gearbox with a proper development cycle. That company has yet to disappoint me with a title that's 100% their own.

Secondly, disappointment is subjective. Going into DNF, I think a lot of people knew the game wasn't going to be on par with modern shooters. Trailers were a dead giveaway, and considering the game suffered for so long it wasn't surprisingly in the least there were so many problems with the actual product. There were a few naive people that thought a decade+ development cycle would make the game Godlike, but they didn't understand how much the game changed or how many financial problems 3D Realms dealt with.

Finally, I think if you're going to ask on the forums and get an answer you're likely to hear Dragon Age II over and over again. DN3D was forever ago, and a lot of younger gamers weren't disappointed with DNF because they don't care about DN. But Dragon Age II was a disappointing sequel to an absolutely beloved (and recent) RPG. I liked DA2, but even the score I gave it ( 8 ) pales in comparison to what I thought of the first one. So personally, DA2 was a bigger disappointment. I gave DNF a lower score, I loved DN3D, but I knew going in it wasn't going to be that great.

There's a good reason for why people moved on from DNF very quickly; it wasn't the experience that people were looking for, myself included. I don't mind games trying out something different for a change, but since when did Duke Nukem become a game where driving or jumping on platforms was involved? There was shooting, but not in a whole lot of instances either. I found it to be a bland, boring game really quickly and it's a shame too. I already said this in my review of the game, but I honestly wonder just what the hell Gearbox saw in this game.

can't say it's disappointing, I mean some part of me wanted it to be fun but I didn't have much hope for that then again there really wan't much else I found disappointing, everything I was interested in this year has at least been decent but most were pretty good

I have to reserve my judgment until I actually play it. I want to try it soon simply because of all the history that it's wrapped up in.

Probably the most disappointing...Brink was bad as well, and Dragon Age 2 was a bit of a disappointment, but it was still a solid game, it just wasn't near as good as its predecessor. DNF however should just stand for "Did Not Finish" bc this game looked shotty, the platforming was dull, and how about those load times, man they were baaaaad. Just not a good game

Well, generally we can probably say so, but personally I didn't care much for it. My biggest disappointment was Ar Tonelico Qoga, I thought it's going to be awesome, but it's pretty much just average and forgetable :S

I haven't played much of this game, other then helping my older brother trying to beat the (SPOILERS!) Octaking boss, which was really HARD, but really fun at the same time. But, I've seen my brother played half the game on my Xbox 360 (before the Octaking boss) and it looks like it's one of the funnest games I've seen. It ain't no boring ass Camp of Duty, Gears of War, Halo (which I like), or any of those Mainstream Shooters. When I face that Octaking boss, it was one of the funnest Battles I played in a FPS, which lots of FPS are really boring nowadays (*Cough*Military Shooters*Cough*). I know I only played one part, but judging me by playing that Battle with Octaking & watching my brother playing half the game, it was an enjoyable experience, even though I haven't yet since my older brother haven't beat it yey (I usually help him here and there on certain Bosses).

To me, it's definitely not Most Disappointing game of the year.

It goes without saying that this is the worst game of 2011 (so far but i am doubtful it will lost its crown) it is literally the laughing stock of the industry, and 95% of any game review site/show/magazine rightfully condemned it as the piece of trash that it is.

I've got 25 hours just by playing the single player (Multi-player sucks)

It's not as great as I'd have hoped but it isn't as bad as everybody says. (PC version)

Aye in agreement with the two posters who said this about dao2..Duke nuke em wasnt that horrible..Wasnt the most memorible game ive played but not half bad as people made it out ot be..

Far as the poster way above asked why did they buy the rights to duke nuke em..Not for this game but for future games..Expect gearbox to bring the duke back but with better graphics and game-play..Its not really a bad idea to bye the rights to the name duke may of us do like him..If its in the right hands gearbox can have a winner on there hands in the near future..
