There were so many mind blowing games shown at the conferences that it's kinda sad most of the discussion has been about anything but games. So let's talk about them. What did everyone like? What blew your mind? Which ones were a disappointment? Let's try not to do polls or pick a Game of The Show. Let's talk about some of the stuff that's been lost in the craziness of E3 and the infamous forum outage of the past few days.

For me, Final Fantasy XV was the most impressive thing on the show. The graphics were insane. The entire towns getting swept away by massive floods while you fly from building to building fighting giant monsters. Everything looked so smooth it felt like CGi. Maybe it was CGi. Phenomenal graphics and gameplay.

The Witcher 3 looked absolutely gorgeous. I have never seen scale quite like this. Huge massive world with millions of trees and a draw distance to die over. Incredible artstyIe too. And the combat finally looks to be responsive and dynamic.

The-Witcher-3-5.jpg

Then there was Metal Gear Solid V. We figured Kojima was making shit up about it being open world, but this truly looks like open world. Once again, the graphics are off the charts, but it's the story and the trailer music that blew me away. We finally see Big Boss becoming evil, torturing people and killing or recruiting child soldiers. Greatest Game of All Time? Greatest game of all time.

It's nuts that no one is talking about Quantum Break. Remedy are talented and this premise here is very interesting. The graphics are sublime as well. Ryse is getting a lot of shit but the graphics looked more next gen than KZ4, Infamous or Drive Club. I saw literally hundreds of NPCs. Very impressive.

Watchdogs and Ass Creed were predictable and boring. Battlefield 4 demos looked great graphically but I've played BF3 SP and it sucks. Watched some MP footage and yup, same old run for ten minutes and die. Near impossible to get into a chopper or a tank or anything cool like that. No thanks. I will stick to Killzone MP. Cross gen games need to go away.

Speaking of KZ, good to see it go more open and less linear, but my god it was a boring demo. It didnt look all that great either. Same with INfamous and Drive Club. Aside from Order 1866, Sony first/2nd party had a terrible showing.

The Division was another open world game that looked phenomenal. It remains to be seen if the games will look that good on the PS4 and XBox One since nearly everything was running on souped up PCs, but the detail on the streets.... wow, just wow. Cant believe this is a MMO.

The division to me looked like it had potential but I'm still confused exactly what it is.. Is it a huge MMO open world game or what? One thing that I really liked about the game was that it was the first game in my opinion to have a actual reason for the tablet support rather then something that is just slapped in there, controlling drones is awesome! BF4 could possibly have cool tablet support as well. My personal favorites were of course metal gear, although they really need to tread carefully with the topics they are dealing with (actual and I mean actual child soldiers rather then just talking about them, and the whole thing like cutting pazs stomach open).. But hopefully they will do well with it reducing the humor they usually have in their games in favor of telling a gritty and sad tale about the fall of snake. But what really shocked me that no one is really talking about is that new game by the makers of CODMW Titanfall. that was the only game that seriously impressed the pants off of me with just how well the gameplay flowed and the mechs and everything.. It was like they combined mech assault ,halo, and the shooting from COD.. I feel like if they play their cards right this game could possibly be the next COD or halo in terms of success Oh yeah totally forgot to bring up FFXV that game looked absolutely amazing after I looked at the gameplay trailer after E3!

OMG. Cant believe I forgot about TitanFall. Looks phenomenal. Im skipping CoD this year and picking this up Day 1 on PC.

Completely agreed on the need to keep MGSV comedy free. They've done it before with MGS3, not sure why he felt compelled to include a monkey for comedy relief in MGS4. All four trailers so far have been serious in tone. No monkey in sight.

I have no idea how they are implementing this Tablet stuff. Is it streaming over the internet? Are they releasing apps that will connect to your gameplay session? If not, are they tablets powerful enough to run next gen games?

Heh, it's not a surprise that you would cite that latest Metal Gear title, S0lidSnake. :P

I am surprised that you didn't cite inFamous: Second Son though. ;)

That said, I personally am waiting for more on Witcher 3 - if only because I know that it's one of very few - if not the only - high-profile game at E3 2013 that will have a DRM-free package for the computer platform.

There were a lot of stand out titles to me, more so than any other E3 in fact. I don't really think I could narrow it down and have a singular, best game of E3.

Metal Gear Solid V was wildly impressive. It took this very familiar franchise and turned it on its head by adding in a more complex stealth system and an open world. The graphics looked insane and yet Kojima said it'll look better upon release. This was the first game I really saw from E3 and the first that convinced me to go next generation Day 1, and I really wasn't expecting there to be so many other titles that would get the same reaction from me.

The Witcher 3 has an open world so rich with detail that it looks better and more interesting than a wildly modded Skyrim, and we haven't seen very much of it! Now, I didn't get to play The Witcher 2 much outside of a few hours at a friend's house but if The Witcher 3 maintains that level of combat with such an impressive world it'll be a day one buy.

I really liked what we saw of The Division too, featuring subtle but impressive animations that remind me of my initial interest in Uncharted 2. I really like the idea of playing a survival type game with such a strong focus on combat. It looks like a lot of care went into that game.

The new Thief looked great for the same reasons I loved Deus Ex: Human Revolution: it looks faithful to the series while making it appealing for newcomers. The gameplay demo up on Gamespot looks like a lot of fun.

I'm a huge fan of the Battlefield series and I was sold once they brought that tank into the subway. It looks to bring back destructibility in a big way, and I'm more than happy to see 64 players will be available on consoles. It does look like a reskin of BF3 (on PC) but it remains my favorite MP title. I'll just be skipping single player.

Speaking of which, Killzone Shadow Fall impressed me with it's single player stage demo. Very cool that the game is much more open, and I can't help but love that you have a zipline with you wherever you go :P I was already surprised at the new art style and it seems like Guerilla is really making an effort to expand on what makes Killzone so great. I want to see some multiplayer, but I have no doubt it'll be great.

I was also a big fan of Bayonetta 2, which looked like more Bayonetta, which is perfect for me. I know I'll be getting a Wii-U down the line for the Marios and Zeldas, so it's nice to know there will be another game that interests me along the way.

Oh, and even though we only got a teaser, I can't help but be excited for Mirror's Edge 2.

Of course there's Final Fantasy XV, which I've been wanting since before the name change, which looked gorgeous and a lot of fun. There's really not a lot to say, other than I feel it could bring Final Fantasy back in a big way.

As for disappointments, I didn't really care for Ryse. I thought it looked technically impressive but really boring. I think more gameplay and actually playing it (assuming I ever grab an Xbone) will change this opinion but I have zero interest in it right now. I also wasn't blown away by Destiny, and I think I'll be one of the few people with that opinion on these forums :P It looked like fun and I'll try it since it has Bungie in the title, but it left a lot to be desired. I wasn't blown away by the art style, and I kind of want to see how the loot system will work in comparison to Borderlands, which I thought nailed it with the second game. Knack looks good, but I want to see more of it and I want to be convinced to purchase it at $60.

There are tons others, like Transistor, Evil Within, Dead Rising 3, Titanfall looked pretty cool, The Crew has the potential to be something special, and there were plenty of teasers like showing a new Halo. I'm also very interested to learn more about The Order.

Yeah I think it was a really bad move on microsofts part to make titanfall a none xbox one exclusive even going so far to put it on xbox 360... Also I have no problem with comedy in metal gear games it's just.. man the stuff they showed in that E3 trailer looks very very serious. Like to the point that I feel like this metal gear game could either go down in fame for tackling such issues tastefully or infamous for how people felt like they exploited issues to make their game and used shock value to show the fall of snake.. I mean the closest we got to a child soldier before this is raiden.. also to the post above I thought ryse looked absolutely amazing up to the point when it turned in QTE the video game...

Infamous second sons looks alright.. I'm still pissed they basically retconned coles story and mad the ending of infamous 2 that much more meaningless and impactful.. Also my friend said the new hero's powers are steam based.. By the gameplay it really dosent seem that way.. although the destruction in the gameplay trailers looked quite fabulous

You know I'll be honest. I think all the ones you listed are great from what I saw of them and I can't really find one that I saw in trailers that stands so much from the rest. I'll have to learn more about how they play before I could answer this question.

PS: Some of us have been discussiong Quantum Break. Looks awesome and has me most intrigued. I just don't really know how it's supposed to play yet. I'll say that one of the most exciting things for me was to see games actually using voice/chat and controller integration like Spark as well as Kinect/controller integration. Been waiting for this for a long time.

http://kaboomshark.com/infamous-second-sons-ret-con-is-sloppy/ it is explained here (spoilers for those who did not beat infamous 2 and got the good ending..) seriously this right here makes me not care at all about the game at all.. it does not help they got lazy and had a entirely new charecter with powers completely different from cole but basically from gameplay video's plays the exact same way.. reeks off milking the series till dry for me.

This may be unrelated, but I am very strongly reminded of a certain other game franchise concerning meta-humans - that very bloody one that involved the eating of people by walking or falling -into- them.

Seems like there's not much difference in the design direction between the two of them. :P

Nope. I am with you on Destiny. It looks good, but we've already done this with Borderlands. I have Witcher 2 but the combat and the upgrade system bored me to death. CD PRoject is adding some of the combat enhancements in Witcher 3 to the Witcher 2 so I may give it another shot.

Just watched Transistor, Bayonetta and Thief. Not feeling them. ;p

i haven't been able to check out all the games i want to (dark souls ii and transistor, among others) because gamespot's coverage has been really disorganized. of what i saw, some games i liked most:

hohokum: i've been waiting to see this game in motion and i came away intrigued. it's on the bizarre side as it smatters basic shapes disguised in bright colors and composed into simple forms that should be immediately recognizable but the clips came off as a little dizzying. the developers gave a few backstories that seemed perfectly logical. how will the player figure this stuff out? i'm interested in finding out while being the weirdest protagonist since noby noby boy.

TES online: it's obviously going to be a sprawling game so a lot of questions remained unanswered. in the single player games, each region feels like a completely different world. how will they tie them all together? how will they each feel as rich individually? there are plenty more. still, the design decisions they showed off were exciting. it was nice to see a fantasy mmo that was less focused on dps. the quest design seemed very appealing, leaving treasure maps to decipher.

destiny: it reminded me a lot of borderlands only with more exciting connectivity features. actually, the lore has me curious too. for that matter, i hear there are settlements to poke around in that hopefully offer a change of pace and hubs to meet up with people. on top of all the cooperative stuff, there are pvp elements that we've yet to see. how will it all tie together? it's ambitious and i plan on keeping my eye on it.

Well, Knack might just sate you; seems like there is potential for Knack to run around smashing things to absorb them just to smash more things with. ;)

I am hoping that game doesn't resort to canned game designs though - but the "stage demo" for it did not inspire any confidence. In fact, the guest for that "stage demo" mentioned about "conveniently placed" materials that happen to be around just before sequences that require Knack to use said materials.

Meh, MGS V's story is going to suck.  I only play those games for the visuals, techinacl accuracy, and game mechanics.  And it's almost not worth it because the story comes this close to tearing it all down with a sledgehammer.

I thought Ryse looked great, and it's the one game that I want a One for.  Thief is looking very promising and I haven't seen much attention paid to it anywhere on the boards which is strange considering the franchise, or maybe I just missed the thread.  Nothing from Nintendo even begins to pique my interest that was revealed at the show, Pikmin 3 is still the only thing I'm remotely curious about.  Sony showed a lot of cool indie games, that plus Driveclub looks cool. Aside from that, I can't of anything really exciting.

how and why? If anything this game might end up having the best story aside from mgs snake eater due to it being about the fall of snake...

If I could pick just one game from E3 to play tomorrow it'd be Witcher 3. I still play skyrim. In fact, when I get done making this post, I'm gonna head on over to the nexus and see if a mod I've been tracking has been updated tonight. So I look at Witcher 3, knowing there's going to be a creation kit for it, and I think about what it would be like to play a version of Skyrim with a great story, with great characters, a politically and culturally fascinating world with monsters that are actually threatening (dragons are a joke) and the sort of mod community that has kept me playing Skyrim this long. And that's what I envision Witcher 3 as being...and I can't wait.

Other strong showings for me were Destiny and the Division. I love MMO shooters and I love this public/dynamic event trend. As soon as that public event popped in the Destiny gameplay reveal I was sold. Shame all these games are so far out. It's what I hate about E3.

As baat wrote, it's not actually the story that I take issue with, it's the way it's told.  It's convoluted, poor storytelling.  I love the wacky Japnese characters that are a trademark of the MGS series (even though I'd love to see a more Western, down to Earth, serious and realistic approach), but the story has to be well written.  MGS is not, at least not in 4.  Kojima still has room to redeem himself but the MGS universe is so f*cked up at this point I'd rather him just start fresh.

yeah but that's the great thing about it being a prequel we havent gotten to this point of being crappy yet.. My favorite MGS and possibly in my top 5 games of all time and one of 2 games to make me have watery eyes (the other being journey) would be MGS snake eater.. so far for the most part everything done with naked snake has been done exceptionally well... I will say that mgs snake eater was so well done because it was a powerful story with great twist told for the most part plain and straight with very few complications along the way.. also snake eater is more of a western esq story in my opinion with realistic characters (though there is a character which controls bee's....) If you have not tried MGS3 I recommend it over and over again and you Don't even have to understand anything really about mgs to enjoy the story since it is technically the first game in the entire series continuity.

Hey - hey - hey, it's not like this upcoming Metal Gear title won't have stupendous things. ;)

Wonder who will play the role of Queequeg? Kojima-sensei won't say a thing.

I don't know - ask the person who drew that after having watched that flaming whale scene.

Heh, maybe it's because the trailers and stuff shown at E3 2013 about this game omitted the bits about asylums, nightmare/unicorn/pegasus and Moby Dick inspirations. ;)

Well I mean a little bit of fantasy is fine I mean every Mgs ends up having these aspects... atleast they make good boss battles? I mean I would rather have a game have memorable bosses that are fun to fight then a straight up realistic game with bosses which are nothing more then regular dudes with more health.

Well, I would not hope much - it looks like one of the battles with the fantastical things, specifically the nightmarish unicorn/pegasus, is an on-rails shooting segment.

Of course, this suspicion is based on just a few seconds in a long trailer.

Aside from that, I can't of anything really exciting.

only someone who's only played mgs4, or a complete idiot would think such things.

Mgs1, mgs2(I'd probably place this as the best story in the series), and mgs3(easily the best game in the series imo) all had fantastic stories, mgs4(not so much) damn nanomachines.

The Witcher 3 was probably the most impressive game of the show. I loved The Witcher whereas I was disappointed with The Witcher 2, but it seems like The Witcher 3 is steering the series back on track.

After I got more information about Ryse, I started to get excited about it. It looks phenomenal and the prospect of historical accuracy and battle tactics is promising. It's the first Crytek game I'm excited about since the original Crysis.

Forza Motorsport 5 looks f***ing awesome. There's nothing more to say about this game, it's going to be another fantastic installment in an awesome series.

It was only a teaser trailer, but I'm excited about Mad Max. Avalanche is at the helm and while I'm not a Just Cause fan, I know that they're a competent studio and I'm hoping that Warner Bros. will steer them right in the story/setting department. Just Cause was always technically sound, but everything in the game was completely meaningless as it painfully lacked any context and purpose.

I've played all of them since the PS original, thanks. :)  No, MGS 2's story was awful, not as bad as 4, but awful nonetheless.  I believe 3 to be the best in the series, though nostalgia's got my heart to 1.  MGS is an on and off series. 1 and 3 are the best, 2 and 4 sucked.

Not feeling them. ;p

S0lidSnake

The problem with Destiny is I don't know if it'll be as fun as Borderlands. Destiny looks to take itself more seriously, which is fine, but that over the top nature and self-parody in Borderlands is great. Destiny looks cool but typical, if that makes any sense. I love Bungie so I'll keep my eye on it, but I'm not impressed.

Does the combat in The Witcher 2 get repetitive? I played it at a friend's house where he was mid-level (I'm guessing) and it was a lot of fun, though I never changed what I was doing.

And hooray for opinions :P (Except for Thief, love it damn it)

In no particular order.

1. Witcher 3 - I've never played a Witcher game, but my brother's a big fan of 2 and the trailer for 3 looked awesome and supposed the scope of this exceeds that of Skyrim.

2. Watchdogs - Extremely slick and the open world game I am most excited about. I want to see exactly how clever you can get with hacking.

3. Infamous Second Son - Loved the prior three games and the new protagonist's powers look insane (looks like he has teleportation and limited flight early on, which makes you wonder what powers his enemies will boast).

4. Project Spark - The next evolution of Play/Create/Share. I've watched two stage demos and read all of the impressions I have found. This free to play Xbone/X360/PC game should be a bigger hit than LBP.

5.The Division - I love squad based shooters and the gameplay footage is just insane. I hope the SP AI is decent because I'm not always going to be in the mood to deal with the BS of random people on the internet.

The Witcher 3 looked stunning and was the game of the show as far as I'm concerned. My anticipation level for that game is very high now. I'm also looking forward to Fable Anniversary and Watch Dogs. Battlefield 4 was impressive and reminded me of when they first showed Crysis to demonstrate DX10 as it was also set on an aircraft carrier but it's not my type of game. From a technical point of view it was great and there was no doubt it was in game graphics being demonstrated.

What? in my opinion mgs2 had the best story of the bunch, sure it was more complicated than the others but damn was it good. The only metal gear games I haven't played are the acid games and portable ops.

You need to know your opinion is not a fact is all.

Dead Rising 3 was my game of the show. It pains me in my ale swiiling canadian heart that the game is exclusive to a platform I will never own. There were other great games, Witcher 3, MGS5, Battlefield 4 but that one was my favorite shown. It just looked like so much fun.

Game of the show: Final Fantasy 15, it looks like the genre is taking a major step forward, the only thing that sucks is that it didnt give us a release date so im guessing a 2015 release date =(

Runner up: Infamous: Second Son, Everything about the game looks awesome, graphics, powers, destruction. etc etc.

Honorable mention: Metal Gear Solid 5, everything about the game looks amazing, but i'm worried that Kojima might be trying to hard to appeal to western gamers.

My top games 1. Star Wars Battlefront- I don't care that we didn't see any gameplay, I am still stoked. The game went through development hell and ended up in the very capable hands of DICE 2. Infamous Second Son- Loved the first two games and this one looks even better. 3. The Division- Any distraught I felt from not seeing Rainbow Six was replaced by amazement of this game, it looked incredible and had great gameplay.
