All this talk of the next "next" gen consoles is making me nervous. I know itll happen eventually of course but to me it seems any kind of announcement like the new xbox being revealed in january is a little premature.

Ive been a game fan since i had a spectrum computer with a black and white tv and there never been a bigger leap in tech than the xbox to 360 or ps2 to ps3. I think weve got so much more to come on the present consoles now theyve got the hang of programming for the ps3 finally i cant see the next gen ones offering anything new. I have both a ps3 and 360 by the way,i was just using that as an example. Games like RAGE look gorgeous compared with the earlier games so it that proof we dont need new consoles yet?

Maybe in 2 or 3 years ill be ready to hear about the new consoles but what do you guys think?

I know theres probably been 1000s of topics like this already but hey ho!

No one is forcing to buy the console at launch. Consoles normally are pretty bad their first year of release, or even more >.>.. No rush into getting it so early.

This is already going to be on record as the longest console generation ever (first gen being the exception of course). It's really showing too considering how ugly console games look these days with their low res textures, low resolutions, and heavy aliasing. I have a PC, X360, and PS3 and I can't wait for the next gen, if only because I'm tired of having my PC's power go to waste thanks to consoles that were obsolete the day they launched. I really don't get why you think next gen's games aren't going to be a big improvement either. I mean, ook at this thread with comparison shots of the PC and console versions of Metro 2033 http://www.gamespot.com/forums/topic/27227188?&topic_id=27227188&tag=stitialclk%3Bforums. That's how antiquated the current consoles' graphics are.

Also, I seriously doubt you've been playing games longer than last gen if you think the jump from last gen to this gen was the biggest leap in tech ever. No one who was playing games during the transition from 2D to 3D would ever say that. I mean, going from a Super Nintendo to a Nintendo 64 was a pretty big ****ing leap. Hell, so was going from a Sega Saturn to a Sega Dreamcast (compare OoT's graphics to Sonic Adventure's. Keep in mind they came out the same year).

I've been on this site since 2004, and last gen it was the same exact thing. A lot of late adopters new to gaming who were absolutely shocked (and livid) that the 5 year old piece of tech they bought for a fraction of its original launch price was about to be replaced by something new and better. People need to understand when they get into this hobby that console cycles usually only last 5-6 years, and that's actually really long when you consider that PC video card cycles last for a whopping 6-12 months.

I'm not ready for the further nickel-and-diming tactics publishers will employ to make up for diminishing returns on games that the next generation will inevitably bring about.

I'm ready for the shenanigans that a new console generation brings, not actually for the systems themselves since I'm not an early adopter, and I probably won't be considering hardware issues and revisions. I could draw nourishment from my backlog and the current generation games I've still to pick up for a long-ass time.

I'm not ready, but if it releases sometime in the near future I don't plan on getting it right off. Honestly, I could be content with the older systems just fine. I'm looking forward to the PSV as well (as well as maybe picking up a 3DS), and I'm expecting that to get plenty of support in the coming years, so I'm not to worried about future consoles right now.

I bet the companies are deciding how long they can hold until the envitable. The painful process of releasing a new consoles usually mean a hardware thats less profitable and needs a boatload of upfront marketing along with the fact that the initial userbase is going to be small thus weaker sales on software.

Though Im sure investors will jump on it and stocks will rise but depending on how well is received than that can help or hurt the company, Nintendo has the biggest risk of all since they are a gaming only company and not conglomerate kind of.

I myself is more than ready for a new console and not for the fact that I care for consoles (anymore) but is that we all know that graphical advances will be determine by console hardware therefore leading to better pc graphics! At least thats how I speculate it to be. The wii u doesnt look half bad with the controller scheme, but Im just afraid if its going to cost $100 a pop for one or whether is comfortable. Better yet I wonder why I am even typing this as when I just woke up.. @.2

After going through 4 360s, even though I wasn't an early adopter, I'll definitely let pass a sizeable amount of time to check out for hardware stability and possible revisions before taking the plunge with the coming generation of consoles, provided I do get any of those instead of going full PC.

The price drops for a reason. That's the cost you pay as a late adopter: the financial price you pay for the hardware is lower, but you also get less time with it before it's replaced by something better. It's kind of silly to be buying an X360 right now and acting surprised that its successor is only a couple years away considering it's 6 years old at this point.

I can't imagine they can hold off for much longer. We've already reached the five-year mark, so they'll probably be making an announcement in the next year or two (assuming they haven't abandoned the five-year life cycle, that is).

It's been 6 years since the 360 came out so I'm sure getting ready for the next gen. It probably won't be quite as a dramatic jump as last gen so they likely won't be as expensive but some boosts in a few key areas can probably lead to a lot of improvements.

The devs are pushing for newer hardware more then the community which should tell you its time.
Its time...

I just hope they don't do the same **** next gen as they did this gen with all the different versions, HDD or no HDD or any of thatBS. (looking at you M$) Whats ever it is I'm just hoping its simple powerful and theythe keep itwithin$399. And don't try any of this $4-599 BS. Make it good but make it affordable. Thats kindawhy the Wii is the number one system...

I'll wait at least a year after the next gen consoles come out before buying one. Until the price comes down a bit and there are more than a tiny handful of launch titles to play on it. It depends on what they're like too. A bunch of new features that don't interest me personally, at a much higher price - I'd be happy to wait a couple of years before getting one of those. On the other hand, some new stuff that I actually do like, at a somewhat reasonable price...that might get my interest.

I'm perfectly happy with the current gen, but I'm open minded. If Sony shows me something awesome and the hardware is a reasonable price, I'll be there at launch.

I rule out the X720 at launch not because I don't think highly of MS's library, but the early X360s suffered from horrible build quality and I won't get burned twice.

Not sure if I'm ready but even if they release today, it's good to wait at least a year for price drop and work the bugs out of it.

If they release in 2012 I might buy in 2013 or so.

Right now I can't even think about buying another. No time for it.

I'm not at all ready, I'm a broke college student. :(

I think I can live with the current consoles for a couple of years though, heck, I'll have to. Although this isn't necessarily a bad thing I guess, I've never bought a console at launch and although I will be sorely tempted to when the PS4 or next Xbox comes out, I'll hold off for at least a year. If there's anything this generation has taught me, it's that launch consoles usually have a lot of problems and you're better off waiting for better models to come out and when the library of games for the console is much larger.

My wallet is not.

Besides being strapped for cash, I'm actually fine with this generation for at least another year or so.

Cheers for all the response and input! I do know what one of the first posters meant about it not being the biggest leap. I was playing streets of rage 2 one week and the next resident evil 2 and i waa blown away. But this last gen still feels to me like a massive leap, especially with things like psn and dlc. Plus the graphics no longer look like blocks. Its wierd how most ps2 games look awful now and back then it was "wow!"

No. I will be skipping the next batch of consoles. There are far too many titles out now that I want to play but can't afford it. I want next gen to get here so that the game prices for this gen will drop. There are almost 100 games that I want to play, that means I will have several years worth of gaming left with this gen.

Totally ready. I'm tired of sub HD resolutions and bad textures. Right now I am a little short of money, but I am sure I will have enough when holiday 2012 arrives. I will probably get the Playstation 4 first and maybe a Wii U later. I'm not so sure about the Xbox 720 yet, depends on specs/power and game line up. I will be one of the first standing in front of the stores on launch day, and it will be §$%&/ great. ;)

I don't really care when the next generation of consoles comes because I never buy a new system until it's been released for about 2 or 3 years. So if a new console was released tomorrow, I wouldn't be getting it for another three years.

Yeah, it kind of worries me. I could go another 3 years without another Playstation being released, but it will probably be earlier than that... I really don't know as I havn't been paying much attention. I do think the current consoles are starting to show their age, but I also don't think they have been used to their full potential, namely the PS3. Oh well, if they do come out in another 2 years or whatever I won't be getting anything right away. I got my PS3 2 years after it launched and I really didn't miss out on much. I caught up on some titles that were released that year, but that's about it.

I've been gaming since the days of Zaxxon and Contra and I just recently caught up on this generation. If next gen of consoles start to surface next year, I'll wait for the price drops or slim versions before buying. PS2's are still relevant to this day. Plus with all the scams developers are doing with this DLC crap, I can only imagine what's in store for the next generation. Why people are so eager to blow $400 - $600 on new consoles and still complain about the same issues is beyond me.

I'm in the same boat. You could do what I did with this gen and wait five years after release so the hardware actually works, is cheaper, and an established library of games.

With every new consoles that is released from here onward would be a marginal upgrade. There isn't going to be any huge jumps in graphics. Those days are gone. I saw some wrote about consoles catching up to PC games, the sad thing is PC games are not that much better looking that the console counter parts. Yes it looks good but not game chaningly good. In addition better graphics mean higher production cost and an overal increase in game prices. Its easy to want a new console but are folks willing to pay the new prices and for a new console?

I don't mind new consoles releasing as soon as they possibly can. I probably won't be buying them any time soon though. I'm wanting to work more on my PS3, PSP, and Wii collections. I also have a huge backlog of DS games to chop down and 3DS games to look forward to. Vita, PS4, Wii U and next Xbox aren't in my near future. I have no problem with successors releasing though. Why not? I'm not forced to buy them or upgrade. I'll upgrade, if and when I'm ready. Go ahead and release new ones. I like to see tech advance.

I am not ready for the next console generation. I have an Xbox 360 and I love having it. Especially with how much money I've invested into it with games, controllers, hard drives, etc, I do not want another console for quite a while. I wish Microsoft and Sony would just stop and realize that they've made great consoles that still sell huge amounts and have tons of great games every year. But they are corporations so they'll keep pumping out consoles because enough people will buy them.

I'm ready for a new Nintendo console, just because I want the better tech and more quality third party games *crosses fingers*.

However, I still have to rebuy a Wii and get a glut of games for it. Need to rebuy Twilight Princess, Mario Galaxy, Metroid Prime 3 (actually, I want to get the trilogy, instead), and Brawl. Then I have to get Mario Galaxy 2, New SMB Wii, the two Kirby games, and probably more. The only notable game I retained was RE4, and only because the buyer didn't want it and I thought I might get a Wii again someday.

I'll have Skyward Sword by December 1st, but nothing to play it on. Haha.

Good call. I see no reason to buy a new one if graphics is the only upgrade. Will we see 3d maybe?

I am for it, if the shooter genre calms down a little bit and a more diverse library of games occurs... I mean at the start of this gen there was more library variety... It seems each year more shooters pop up. While many genres go underrepresented.

I'm in the same boat. You could do what I did with this gen and wait five years after release so the hardware actually works, is cheaper, and an established library of games.

I actually waited quite a while to delve into this gen. I knew it would be my last one for a while.
