well, oculus rift was an unproven technology with support from a niche group before being bought by facebook. after the purchase, they're an unproven technology with less support.

i suppose these things are proven to be good or bad deals in the long run though (i've always said it would be the VERY long run for VR :P ).

@S0lidSnake: i rarely use Facebook so that stuff never bothered me but yes I remember it now. Fine they have done some crappy stuff in the past yet everyone still uses it.

As for what they get from this, the fact that they don't make software is good, they have no clue how to use VR, this will let oculus work on their own. This is better than say MS buying them which would know what to do with it and make it Xbox exclusive and forced to work with kinect. Once the public gets their hands on this thing everyone will want a piece of this tech and Facebook will own it. They will figure out the best way to make use of VR for social use and they could do whatever they want with that. That has nothing to do with the gaming side of VR. Or at least we hope.

Of course it does, don't be naive. A social media driven and focused company has just acquired tech that (so far) has solely gaming as its focus for 2 billion dollars. If you don't think that this acquisition will have any impact on the gaming side of things, well, I don't know what to tell you. Even if it's not of FB's doing as there has already been game cancellations by developers due to this deal. It's already happening.

Notch canceled, Normal developers won't freak out. The impact this will have on the gaming side is that it will come out quicker and be cheaper. Facebook NEEDS Oculus to be a massive success in gaming. It needs this device to deliver on all the promises. It needs to wow the masses. We the gamers will bring this stuff into homes, from there we will show it to family and friends and the buzz will begin. "I want that for movies!" "I want that to virutally go on vacation", etc.

It all starts with video games, if the games fails there is nothing to show off what VR can really do. Facebook knows this.

The Oculus VR will be released next year, it will have all the features it was promised. It will be open to all PC games who want to use it. It will be an open platform.

What happens after that who knows.

My guess is that after it will hurt gaming.
