FF7, 8 and 9 were life changing games, brilliant, loved them.

Now that that's out of the way...

Looking at a few walkthroughs on youtube, FF13 seems so utterly juvenile, maybe to the point of total idiocy. Okay it's in Japanese, but the way they look, the excessive emo emotions in the cutscenes.... this 30 yrld guy can't take it.

What is this horrible trend in j-rpgs.....is there something wrong with a mature story aimed at adults and characters that look the part (ie not adrogenous little boys or pixie-like girls)? It's much, much worse than in FF12. Earlier FF's felt like they were made for adults story wise, gameplay wise... but this.

nostalgia vs. obsolete.

This reminds me of one episode of Jon Stewart, in which John Oliver is talking about some news organization wants American to return to the "good old days". But they never seem to find that good old days feeling again. People wonder why. The reason is, that good old days left a long time ago along with your childhood. That whimsical feeling is a period piece, something can be relished but never recaptured. But that really has nothing to do whether what we have at hand is good or bad, so comparing that distance feeling to what is now is pretty... unremarkable.

They are playing to a different crowd. The original fan base of JRPGs may not love it but people who like teen angst. Its also in an effort to attract more girls to the series.

You mean the same horrible trend that has been going on for 20 years now? As for gameplay wise the gameplay from earlier FF's were way to simplistic and suffered from lack of depth (even when Square introduced the ATB system). Why don't you play the game first before judging.

Maybe you're just growing up, nostalgia ain't what it used to be. Still, the cut scenes I have seen made me cringe as well, cheesy as hell!!

what are you going on about?? ff12 didn't have a childish story or anything and u havent played ff13 ur basing it off of japanese youtube videos...

FFX was a great game too how could u think that was childish. all jrpgs are aimed at people who just love anime and stories like that imo..

and btw Squall was way more emo than other FF character I have seen soooo ya. second to that would be Tidus, but it's what tries to get you into the story. if FF8 had modern cutscenes it would be like FF13 cuz they would want you to feel how the character is feeling, back then was just text but not with facial emotions and talking they changed it up.

final fantasy 13 will be a great game dude, if ur getting second thoughts about it. then maybe your time for jrpgs is done :(

All that stuff is in 7, it just wasn't presented as well. Go play Final Fantasy 7 now and tell me with a straight face that it was all fantastic and you really loved the anime-style storytelling.

Keep in mind that JRPGs are first and foremost made for the Japanese market. That should answer every question on why JRPGs are the way they are. It's a anime-infested culture, which is why almost every JRPG is basically a playable anime. I say almost because of games like Demons Souls, which we don't see often. If only more Japanese developers were willing to make something different like From Software did with Demons Souls.

Childish? I don't think so. All Final Fantasy stories have their own way and very exciting. I believe you must try the game before judging it.

Like others have said, it's probably the audience that the FF games cater to. If you want more mature stories, you have to look elsewhere. Don't expect FF to change its tune.

Take off your pink nostalgia goggles, will you? FFXIII doesn't look any more childish than your beloved FFVII, VIII and IX.

The games are aimed to teens, so maybe it may turn off some 30 year olds like the TC, but I don't play games for the storyline. It's for the gameplay.

perhaps you have just outgrown them TC. FF games are targeted towards teenage girls in japan first and foremost (according to Games mag). i havent played 13 so i cant comment on how good/bad it is on the emo/childish/annoying story and characters front. though squall from FF8 certainly takes some beating on that front.....what a..well the forum permits me from describing him. needless to say....not my fav FF character when i played it all those years ago (didnt like the game either to be honest). ff7 also had a fair bit of emo in it.....it was just brilliant despite those problems. sometimes i just wanted to give cloud such a smack.

I'd very much agree that the story and many aspects of the game are quite juvenile. It's something that some Japanese players have complained about and to be honest after finishing the game I am off the same feeling. Having said that it is just a videogame that helped me kill a few hours so I don't really care anymore. FFXIII is already ancient history to me at this point.

I'd say the presentation of FFXIII was a little more juvenile than say, VIII. But it wasn't any more Juvenile than VI, VII, or IX. The sillyness is easy to ignore when you have 2D graphics like VII or super deformed like VII or IX. But when you have juvenile elements in full HD all the time then they're more obvious.

This.

Time goes on, things change. Final Fantasy is a HUGE franchise with an equally huge fan base. But as time went on, trends and views of what is 'good' in Japan (and everywhere else) has changed.

But to dismiss the entire game as juvenile is rather ignorant, if you ask me.

have you ever played a final fantasy game that was rated M? Just because it doesn't have a ton of gore, and sex doesn't mean it isn't good. Final Fantasy games traditionally have some of the best stories and cinematics of all time

No offense, but you have a fictional character riding a cartoon bird called a chocobo, pretty sure that eliminates you from calling anything childish.

In reference to the conversation I am going to leave my judgement for until after I play the game. I have no issues with a story geared more towards younger audiences as long as the basic gameplay is fun and involving and the story is well written. Other than that it could be Final Fantasy 13: Barbie's Chocobo Adventures or Final Fantasy 13: Power Rangers Beat Up Stuff

I never really mind that angstyness in FF or JRPG's at all. Maybe because it helps me reflect on my own, lack of self confidence or low self esteem. I personally can't stand it, if the hero of any RPG just BA from start to finish, seems well unrealistic. These heros have unrealistic setting placed upon them, I would expect some sort of self doubt or grievence over past mistakes. But I suppose thats just me.

I don't watch youtube vids of games prior to playing them, especially not a game I would hope has a good story. I think you worded your topic poorly though, Im 30 this year but that doesn't stop me from playing Mario games because I would be an idiot to not enjoy something solely on the grounds that somebody else might judge me for doing so.

Yes, people that die if they don't follow a tyrant government's orders is childish (sarcastic, btw).

This game, to me, seems far more mature than many other FF games I've seen. Wait till you play the game before coming with such an impression.

I agree, its different and will bring in a new crowd of people to it, the problem with gamers is that complain about companies doing the samething over and over again, but when they do something new, we whin because they don't do more of same thing, we need to make our minds up about what we want.

Earlier FF's felt like they were made for adults story wise, gameplay wise... but this.

BoredGames

I see it the other way around. The games that are made to look "adult" are often far more childish. Part of the reason they use the, as you call, "childish" look is to slip in themes that would normally hit the rating. A game with "adult" like characters is going to go through more scrutinizing by the folks rating the games. Personally I prefer the more artistic look, as there tends to be more meat to the story, which sometimes gets missed by people--sadly.

I think you should close the youtube vids, go play the game, then affirm your position and come back with a better opinion..
