Another jaded complaint about the evolution of the Final Fantasy series and its characters.

Hmm... I think you'd probably faint if you tried to play FFX-2...

I honestly don't see how they're doing anything more childish in 13. 7 had it's share of cutesy stuff, in 8 yeah squall was emo, 9's main character was a cute little rodent thing with a tail. If the characters and story seem more "emotional" it's probably because the earlier FF games didn't have voice acting, facial expressions, high character detail.

Like others have said, it's probably the audience that the FF games cater to. If you want more mature stories, you have to look elsewhere. Don't expect FF to change its tune.

King9999

Not in my opinion, the previous games I played from FF6-9 all had mature stories, quite obscure stories/plotsin some ways, and the character presentations, while anime, was nothing like glossy japanesebarbie and ken look we see here.

FF7, 8 and 9 were life changing games, brilliant, loved them.

Now that that's out of the way...

Looking at a few walkthroughs on youtube, FF13 seems so utterly juvenile, maybe to the point of total idiocy. Okay it's in Japanese, but the way they look, the excessive emo emotions in the cutscenes.... this 30 yrld guy can't take it.

What is this horrible trend in j-rpgs.....is there something wrong with a mature story aimed at adults and characters that look the part (ie not adrogenous little boys or pixie-like girls)? It's much, much worse than in FF12. Earlier FF's felt like they were made for adults story wise, gameplay wise... but this.

I've never seen a person embarrassed to play a game, if it's that bad don't play it.

The characters in FFXIII overcome their hardships through the power of friendship and belief...it is extremely juvenile. Granted that almost every RPG has this happen-but when they say that they mean they used the power of friendship and belief as a means to help them become stronger or find the courage to overcome their trials...in FFXIII they actually USE friendship and belief to overcome their problems as if "Friendship" was an item in the inventory right alongside the phoenix downs..., they actually just "will" their problems away through postive thought (wft...)...it's downright absurd and fails to even make sense within the games own context.

I was not aware of this...well, when ya put it that way, it definietely puts FFXIII up there on the child-ish scale. I'm gonna take it for a spin anyway because I loves me some RPGs =D

Dude, it's a JRPG...what were you expecting? I mean, do you think anime is an exception in Japan when it comes to ridiculous story lines and characters? Hell no, that's typical Japanese pop-culture story writing.

Also, I balk at the idea that FF7 was more mature. It was quite possibly the most anime-like FF of them all. If you think it was mature or somehow less cliche/ridiculous than any other FF story, you're viewing it through nostalgia goggles.

Dude, seriously, spoiler tags. It's not hard just use (spoiler)Spoiler here(/spoiler) and replace the () with []. If you have to avoid the spoiler tags (GS glitching up) then give people plenty of time to scroll away by making a massive gap in your post between a giant spoiler warning, the spoiler, and then another giant spoiler warning. Something like

Generally works well.

They are playing to a different crowd. The original fan base of JRPGs may not love it but people who like teen angst. Its also in an effort to attract more girls to the series.Diablo-B
I agree with this a hundred percent. I'm not saying 13 is bad because I haven't played it yet. But judging from the trend of FF games now, the core selling point of it is far from FF7, 8 or 9. If I remember correctly, themes of Friendship and Courage always used to be an essential part of the story...and the whole feel of the game was more like playing through a fairytale. Nowadays maybe that just doesn't work for the market anymore. That or maybe I'm just distracted by how the characters were modeled like J-rock stars. XD

Having played through the game, I simply do not agree. It is no more childish than most Role Playing Games in it's intended humor. The overall story and direction of the game may fall to some cliche manga lines, but the overall product isn't tarnished because of it. The story (and heavy back story found in the auto clip) have a fairly deep meaning and mature tone, I honestly wouldn't worry much if you enjoyed the listed titles in your OP.

nostalgia vs. obsolete.

This reminds me of one episode of Jon Stewart, in which John Oliver is talking about some news organization wants American to return to the "good old days". But they never seem to find that good old days feeling again. People wonder why. The reason is, that good old days left a long time ago along with your childhood. That whimsical feeling is a period piece, something can be relished but never recaptured. But that really has nothing to do whether what we have at hand is good or bad, so comparing that distance feeling to what is now is pretty... unremarkable.

Cutscenes cheesy and childish?? I don't know if we're talking about the same game here but FF is always the best in the business when it comes to cut scenes. If you have so many problems with this game don't play it. I on the other hand will be enjoying this game March 9th while you guys cry that the lead character is a female or any other lame excuse you can come up with. Seriously who cares if a guy has a baby chocobo in his hair. I didn't hear anything when FFVII had a giant Cat like thing with another Cat on top of it (Cait Sith), or when FFVIII had guns and blades in one, or when FFIX had a weird chef who ate frogs. The worst I've heard before was "I'm not playing this game because the main characters name is Lightning" I mean are you serious??? That's not even her real name and who plays a game based on what the characters names are. Some people make me so angry trying to dig deep for tiny little faults (if you can call them that). Ok i've said enough....

You're not getting it, the older games weren't childish, they had charm. This one actually feels like it's aimed at a young audience.

I don't like how Japanese are so focused on the small fraction of life which is your teens. I have never been into that, but I do like some of the art direction to their games.

I want the look and style of a Japanese game combined with the play-style of a good Western Bethesda or Bioware RPG. Or perhaps even a GTA with anime influences.

Final Fantasy lost It's way after FFX, I played FF XII and that was god aweful, so I have no hope in this game.

andalore

As a serie, this game has tried so many things with this genre. It constantly made sure to revamp this series and the genre as a whole by not being afraid to do things differently. I think it is admirable. FFX was my first FF game and FF8 is the second. Since FFX, we got FFX-2, FFXII on the console. Only two games out of its main franchise that is consisted of 12 in total, did not fit your style of playing, all of sudden it is hopeless, lost its way, blah blah blah. This is just passive aggressive fanboy, i mean really, the worst kind.

On a similar note, I am playing Dante's Inferno and it is really a superb game. I like how the reviewer bashed it just because it didn't copy God of War 100%. I don't know why people just bash against things that are simply out of their expectations.

No. There's actually not very much CG at all in this game ... It has less CG movies than the 1st disc of FFVIII.

RPGs in general aren't even aimed at young audiences...

@ASK Story: They actually cut the battle scene with the big robot scorpion-thing out for that particular video. I've been watching clips of FFXIII, trying to generate some enthusiasm for this game, and they ARE beautifully rendered and animated scenes, but the shallow 2-D characters(stern, humuorless warrior; goofy sidekick), awful voice-acting, and that voice-over dude,

" ... FINAL ... FANTASY ... X ... I ... I ... I ... "!!

I just want to punch him!!
