Over the past two decades the fighter genre was evolved. It all started in the early 90s with the release of Street Fighter II. It surely was not the first fighter, but it easily became the first popular fighter. Other companies saw the success of Capcom's game, and quickly tried to emulate the experience. Street Fighter II may have been the reason arcades held on just a few more years before slowly dying out. Regardless, the fighter genre was truely born and quickly became one of the fastest growing genre over the next few years.

Personally, I have always been a huge fan of Fighters, and I have had the change to play through a ton of great fighters over the years.

What is your favorite all time fighter? It does not have to be limited to just a single game, it can be a series too.

Also what are some of the best fighters out there? Are there any Dark Horse games you feel were really good but just never became popular?

Hopefully this thread can prodcue some really good talk about Fighter games.

My favorite series easily is the Soul Caliber games. It all started the summer before frshamn year of high school when I bought this game for the dreamcast. It easily became my favorite game. I was amazed by the graphics at the time, I felt like I was playing an arcade game in my own living room. The gamplay was fluid and the controls were a perfect following in between simple and complex. The game was easy to pick up and play but hard to master. Throughout high school my friends and I would often play local multiplayer and always had a blast. This game becamse a pretty big favorite early on in my college dorm. One thing that I loved is that each character has a weapon, it just added to the fighting experience. I have bought every game in the series since, and I have never been disappointed (well maybe once, I wish Darth Vader was just a little faster in Soul Caliber 4).

The 90's is still my favorite era of fighting games. It was obviously the golden age for fighting games but slowely I'm changing my tune. I'm liking this era of fighting games. I don't really care what tourney players or pros have to say about the matter though. I play for fun not for moneyand/or internet fame. This is the age for competitive gaming but it has gotten quite ridiculous and it's embarrasing to be a part of that scene with the way people act today. Anyway going off topic a little. Sorry. I'm a Mortal Kombat fan. Always was but the funny thing isI only liked 1 and 2. I loved 2.

3 turned me off of the franchise a little. I loved a lot of the new characters but that was about it. After UMK3 I stopped playing but this new one coming out looks like it's right up my alley and I can't wait to get back into my favorite fighting franchise again after being on such a long hiatus with it. It's about time Ed Boon made an MK game that MK2 fans like myself have been waiting for and deserve. I love the new SFIV and SSFIV games also.

They are a lot of fun but SF always became the last thing I would play if I was getting bored of playing MK2. It was my least favorite fighting game.Killer Instinct was always my other fighting game to fall back on first if I needed a break from MK2. I recently picked up MVC3 and that is a lot of fun. I dabbled in the previous MVC games but never actually owned one or got into them that much because like I said pretty much after MK2 I fell out of love for fighting games for a long time. A lot of people are upset with the MVC3game I guess (Tourney players) but I like it. They are just pissed because it isn't the same game as MVC2.

I do think the character roster should have been a little better though but I don't use many characters anyway and like I said I just bought the game and I have been trying to mostly learn how to play it because I'm a newby and from the looks of it I have a lot to learn. www.shoryuken.com helps you out a lot. I use Dante/Ryu/Captain America right now but I think I'm gonna change it up to either Wesker/Dante/Captain America or Wolverine/Dante/Captain America I haven't decided yet.

I'm still trying to figure out who compliments who and who stengthens who's weaknesses best. All I know is I want Captain America in my combination. Idk its funny because I'm starting to feel like I'm in the 90's all over again with all these reboots. I'm loving it. Hopefully this is the new golden age of fighting games. It feels like it. Although many will probably disagree.

The MK franchise has been amazing through the years, I loved UMK3.I really have only gotten into MK2, UMK3, MK Gold, MK Armageddon and MK v.s DC.I recently got into DC vs Mortal Kombat, and I enjoyed it.Sure they toned down the gore, but the fighting mechanics were still great and there is nothing like a Batman v.s. Subzero fight! I actually really enjoyed MK Gold for the Dreamcast, it wasn't that well-recieved though when it came out. Def a lot of fun in the 90's with that series! I remember when I got MK II for Xmas, my parents wanted to take it back because of the blood and gore, but eventually let me keep it.

MvC2 was amazing, I absolutely loved that game back on the dreamcast. While it was a lot of fun, it was tough to get some of my friends into it as it required much more skill compared to other fighters to be competitive. I bought MvC3 recently, and I have played it on and off the last two weeks. The character roster is smaller than MvC3, but I am ok with it because almost all the characters have a unique fighting s t y l e and move set (minus Ryu and Akuma). They did simplify the game though compared to MvC2, its so much easier to pull of hyper and air combos. I think they were trying to appeal more to a mainstream audience, which is not completely a bad thing, but its takes a little finese and skill requirement out of the game. I have been using Spiderman/Wolverine/Dante mostly, sometimes Ironman/Wolverine/Dante. Its tough not to use Dante because he has a ton of special moves, he is fast and its good counters air and ground attacks.

On the point about online competitiveness, yes this have been quite the age for that. It has added a completely new component to Fighters. I still prefer local multiplayer, but it seems its much tougher to get the guys together for that these days. Some of my friends have PSN accounts, so we can battle each other online. My experience playing random people online has always been hit or miss. Sometimes I get absolutely destroyed and I wonder if these guys do anything else in life then play Fighters. But there are times were I catch people my skill level and he have close matches that come down to the last second of tick on the health bar.

The 90s still seem like the golden age for Fighters, but last decade has continues to deliver with Fighters. I think the popularity of Fighters has gone down since the 90s with the rise of the FPS genre. Of course I was just a kid throughout the 90s, but it just seemed liked all my friends were into Fighters. Now most are into FPS and sports games.

I like the Virtua Fighter , Dead Or Alive and Street Fighter (along with the vs series) series in particular.

ones I don't like is mainly Tekken , I dislike 1 and 2 particularly because I hated the controls , which I found to be laggy, and made the game feel a bit like a button masher in comparison to other 3D fighters. Tekken 3 and Tekken Tag were better attempts and I actually enjoyed them.

I like Mortal Kombat and King of Fighters too , but not as much as Street Fighter.

as for a "dark horse" or an unknown fighitng game, I would have to go with Last Bronx on the Saturn , very good game.

I agree with your comments on the tekken series, it seems too much of a button masher. I guess the same can be said about soul caliber, but I think Soul Caliber really takes skills to become good, and once you practice a little, its very easy to beat button mashers most of the time. I have played Tekken Tag, Tekken 4 and Tekken 6. Good fighters, but as good as others out there.

I have never played Last Bronx, I was still pretty younf when I had the Saturn, so the only time I got new saturn games was Xmas/birthdays or if I got to rent them. Honestly I remember being in shock when my parents bought me a Saturn for Xmas. My Saturn library isn't that big because of that. I will have to check that title out, maybe I can find it on ebay. one thing is for sure, the Saturn had some of the best fighters in the 90s

JoJo's Bizzare Adventure is a dark horse fighter to me. It never was popular, but anyone that played it agrees, it was pretty damn good. Not too sure if you have played it, but one of the Best DC games in my book!

Yea but lately FPS's haven't been bringing anything new to the table. They are dying I think slowely but surely which will leave room for something else to take over. Frankly I 'd love to see fighters make a comback and take over for a while even if its only for a couple of years or so. FPS's have had almost 2 decades to shine and they aren't doing anything new.

I never understood the big deal with Tekken 1, it didn't play well and had pretty mediocre graphics (even for the time), Tekken 2 was better but only by a bit. as for Soul Calibur , its a good game, though the best 3D fighting game on the DC for me, is either Virtua Fighter 3 or Dead Or Alive 2. sadly Ive never played Bizzare Adventure, but youre right in saying the Saturn has one of the best fighitng game libraries of any system at the time (possibly the best unless youre a Tekken fan)

The problem with Soulcalibur is that it's too slow for me. I was never really into Soulcalibur or DOA. I owned Soulcalibur IV and the recent DOA and tried to give the 2 franchises a chance but I couldn't get into them no matter how hard I tried so I sold them real quickly. I loved Virtua Fighter 2 for the Saturn and 3 for the Dreamcast. I also loved Tekken 2 for the PSone back in the day but after 2 I stopped playing Tekken.

The new Soul Calibur (4) isn't all that great to begin with. Just stick with 1 on the Dreamcast, best one IMO, or Soul Calibur 2 on the Gamecube as you get Link as a character ( :P ).

As for me I'll probably go with Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat. I played both as a kid and stuck around with both for a while. I still play various Street Fighters to this day across different consoles. My best friend and I tend to lug our arcade sticks to each others house so we can play proper matches of Super Street Fighter IV :P .

Mortal Kombat 2 is probably my favorite in the MK series and my interest peaked with Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3. Everything after that was pretty much trash until Deadly Alliance on the Ps2. Then the series went down hill again lol, and quite frankly I'm not all that stoked for the new Mortal Kombat coming out this year, they've just butched the series so much.

Great thread I've been on a bit of a fighter binge at the moment and am satisfying the collector in me too, so far I have the following:

  • Mortal Kombat trilogy (PSX)
  • Street fighter anniversary (Xbox)
  • Hyper street fighter 2 aniversary (PS2)
  • Street fighter 4 (PS3)
  • Super street fighter 4 (Xbox360)
  • Blaz Blue: calamity trigger (xbox360)

I'm on the look out for more and am searching the usual sites for more additions I didn't realise just how many fighting games there are about. This thread has given me some good titles to add to my list. Keep the recommendations coming!

I will agree Soul Caliber and Soul Calibur 2 are def the best in the series. I still like 4, I thought it represented the series pretty well on the current generation of consoles. The character roster was great and I liked the addition of the Star Wars Character. Despite wishing Darth Vader was faster, I still enjoy using him.

As far as speed goes, a large part of soul calibur is defense and counter attacks. At least it seems that style of play works the best with the characters I use. But compared to MK, SF, and VF, yes it is a little slower paced.

Despite what alot of people have said, I think the MK series has been solid all along, even recently. I never understood why people disliked DC vs MK so much. Yes, I will admit I was disappointed that the gore was toned down, but it still played well. And since I am a huge DC fan, I really liked fighter the MK guys as Batman, the joker and Superman. I liked that the series really tried to go in the 3d direction with both PS2 titles, I enjoyed both Deadly Alliance and Armageddon. I don't think it failed at all on that front, but I understand why MK fans the series to go back to its 2D roots.

And Darkman, you def have to play JoJo's Bizzare Adventure. Sure it wasn't the best Fighter on the dreamcast (Very tough competition) but it was an interesting fighter for sure and the gameplay won't disappoint

Great thread I've been on a bit of a fighter binge at the moment and am satisfying the collector in me too, so far I have the following:

  • Mortal Kombat trilogy (PSX)
  • Street fighter anniversary (Xbox)
  • Hyper street fighter 2 aniversary (PS2)
  • Street fighter 4 (PS3)
  • Super street fighter 4 (Xbox360)
  • Blaz Blue: calamity trigger (xbox360)

I'm on the look out for more and am searching the usual sites for more additions I didn't realise just how many fighting games there are about. This thread has given me some good titles to add to my list. Keep the recommendations coming!

jwn25

Glad to see a fan of the Blaz Vlue series. Despite its steep learning curve, its a very solid 2D fighter and man does it has its own s t y l e. I own calamity trigger, but I haven't really put in the team needed to bre really good at that game.

If you are looking for some Fighters, and really don't want to spend a lot of cash, there are a few really good ones out there current gen. Both Soul Calibur 4 and Virtual Fighter 5 are sitting at $14.99.

MK v.s DC has got to be in the $20 or less, but if you are not a DC fan, you might want to skip it.

I hesisate to recommend the New King of Fighters game only because its still around $40 and it really is lacking content wise. I think one that game hits $20, its a much better buy.

I personally prefer the Saturn's fighting game library to the DC in all honesty.

actually, I prefer the Saturn's overall game library.

had Sega not thrown in the towel early, the Saturn would have probably seen games that eventually made it to the DC like Marvel Vs Capcom , Street Fighter 3 , Capcom Vs SNK.

Astra Superstars.

Astra Superstars was designed specifically for the Saturn , and really shows what the system could do in the 2D fighter genre.

Darkman is right, the saturn by far has one of the greatest fighter libraries out there.

I also think the DC is pretty strong when it comes to fighters.

You can find both systems pretty easily still and they really aren't that expensive.

The Fighter games on the otherhand can be tougher to find and the good ones can be pretty expensive

the only big hinderence on the DC is the absolutly awful controller, it sucks for most games (other then driving) but fighting games in particular due to the shoddy d-pad and cheap buttons, the 4 button design doesnt help either.

that said, Ive gotten a fighting game pad for the Dreacmast, and its great.

This is the one I have, the ascii fight pad, no analog, but its great for fighting games.

and yes its modeled after the Saturn controller, although thanks to the DC only having 6 buttons (rather then the Saturn's 8) , its more like a 6 button Mega Drive pad.

Definitely need one of those. Pulling off Dragon Punches with the Dreamcast controller hurts after a while

Wow, I didn't even know that made a controller like that for the dreamcast. Looks like I will be investing in one soon.

they aren't too cheap, but I wouldnt call them rare, probably £25-30, and they were released both in Japan and the US (not sure about Europe, as I have the JP import)

put it this way, I had major issues playing Dead Or Alive 2 and Street Fighter 3 due to the standard DC controller being a steaming pile (or at least I think so), but now the controls are almost as good as playing Dead Or Alive or Street Fighter Zero 3 on the Saturn , the fightpad is that good.

[QUOTE="AcidSoldner"]

[QUOTE="Foulcry"] The problem with Soulcalibur is that it's too slow for me.

I liked MK vs DC Universe. I owned it for a while and got what I could out of it. Then I sold it. I wasn't in love with it enough to hold on to it and keep coming back to it for years to come but it was a decent game. It was definitely a step in a better direction for MK then in previous titles. People hated it because it wasn't a traditional MK fighting game but what people don't understan is it wasn't just an MK game and DC Comics was very against all the gore and brutality that comes with MK. They only ageed to do it if they toned down the violence. Thats what I heard anyway that it was mostly DC's fault. I think now Ed Boon regrets doing it but he shouldn't because it wasn't a bad game. I think DC should join up with Marvel and Capcom if they were to do another fighting game because DC characters would be best represented in a game with Marvel and Capcom. You know or with just Capcom whatever. They could do Marvel vs DC or DC vs Capcom or Marvel/DC vs Capcom. I would love to play the Green Lantern in a game like MVC3. I'm not so sure if I like the idea of the SF vs Tekken idea or the other way around because they said they are doing two games probably one with Tekken in SF's world and one with SF in Tekken's world. I don't think that will make a good fighting game only because both worlds play completely different from each other. Its gonna be interesting to see how they make this work.

I really liked the Tekken series...now here me out I alread know some people are calling it a flat-out button smasher...

...only the noobs button smash.

It is truely a marvel to play real tekken players...not MLG or anything, but legit players that know what they are doing.

I respect Street Fighter II the most because it redefined the genre and basically is a cult classic. But my personal favourite is Mortal Kombat II. I also respect the Virtua Fighter series for bringing the genre into 3D graphics and I also like Killer Instinct and quite like Tekken 3.

I'm not a hardcore player but I do like these type of games sometimes. I also think 2D is better than 3D for these games.

Oh I know all too well believe me. I was one of those kids waiting for it to hit the Saturn. Even the Shenmue version but to be honest I'm glad they didn't release Shenmue on Saturn. I don't think the Saturn would have done it justice or pulled it off as good as DC did. Virtua Fighter on the other hand I think would have been a better version on the Saturn. Saturn did a really great job with fighting games. Not saying DC didn't do it well either but for some reason there was just something about playing a fighting game on the saturn that satisfied me more then on the DC.

its called a better controller :P the Saturn's hardware had its issues but it is true it was pretty better suited to fighting games then other consoles at the time, 2D or 3D. to put it simply, the PS1 would have slowed to a crawl if it tried to run games like Last Bronx and DOA as they were on the Saturn (DOA had to have numerous changes to get it to run on the PS1, most of them for the worse) and I don't know, I can kind of agree since its obvious the DC shenmue wipes the floor with Saturn Shenmue visually, but I do think Saturn shenmue is one of the best (if not the best) looking game of its generation , and easily the most ambitious.

Yea right lol..... I hated the DC controller and I think almost everyone did. I agree it was nicely done on the Saturn for the Saturns capabilities but I definitely prefer the DC version. Just like I prefer the Shenmue 2 DC version over the Xbox version which I thought was crap compared to the DC one. I'm sure most would agree.

While I don't think it would every happen DC/Marvel v.s. Capcom would really be amazing, but realistically I don't see why they couldn't do a straight Marvel vs DC for the current systems. The rosters would mess very well! Who would not want to see Batmen face off agianst captian America, the possiblities are endless!

I am not a huge fan of the idea of Tekken v.s. SF, I just don't think the characters mess well. Then again this may also be because I am not a huge tekken fan. I would imagine Tekken fans are pretty pumped about this game coming out in the near future.

I do own Tekken 6, maybe I will try to get into it. I bought it mainly to try to get into the series, but I just lost interest quickly. What is funny is I actually bought the tekken 6/arcade joystick edition when it dropped in price last year. I really bought it mainly for the joystick as it is pretty identical to the others out there, but was cheaper at the time.

the worst fighting game I own is Dragonball Z Shin Butouden on the Saturn.

some people apparently like this game, but I think its bloody awful , very sluggish controls, very strange frame rate (its not slow , but it feels choppy) , and the graphics/animation are pretty bad considering the Saturn's 2D.

actually, other then the colours, Im quite confident the SNES or Mega Drive could have done this game very well

I'd say the worst fighting game I ever owned was Street Fighter: The Movie. God that game was bad.

Foulcry

I unfortunately own that gem of a game as well. Ahortly after Sega stopped supporting the Saturn, a few stores in my area had put a ton of saturn games on clearence. I remember picking Mortal Kombat II, Street Fighter: The Movie , Clockwork Knight 2a nd Gold Axe The Duel for around $10 each.

I agree, Street Fighter: The Movie as pretty bad, I even felt like for $10 I wasted my money

Darkman2007

the worst fighting game I own is Dragonball Z Shin Butouden on the Saturn.

some people apparently like this game, but I think its bloody awful , very sluggish controls, very strange frame rate (its not slow , but it feels choppy) , and the graphics/animation are pretty bad considering the Saturn's 2D.

actually, other then the colours, Im quite confident the SNES or Mega Drive could have done this game very well

Just watched teh youtube video on that. SNES graphics and for some odd reason the game looks choppy and has framrate slowdown.

Most Dragonball Z fighting games are crap. Aside from the Budokai/Tenkaichi series on the Ps2 the only other Dragonball Z fighting game I enjoyed was Hyper Dimension on the SNES.

here is hyper dimension on the SNES, this game uses a chip in the cartridge that helps decompress the animation, but even so, it looks better to me then Shin Butouden, considering the Saturn's 2D capability wipes the floor with the SNES (not surprising for a number of reasons)

I think Shin Butouden actually uses the same sprites as ultimate battle 22 from the PS1, which looked awful on the PS1, but on the Saturn you expect more......

can you believe this game came out in 1996???

I like Dead or Alive the best. I dislike Virtua Fighter, however these statements are based on aesthetic value alone.

I have a ton of fighting games as they are my favorite genre. I have to say that the PS2 had the best collection of fighting games. Tekken 5 is my favorite fighting game of all time. I have Tekken 1,2,3,4,5,6... Virtua Fighter 4: Evolution, Virtua Fighter 5, Mortal Kombat Deception, Dead or Alive 2: Hardcore, Soul Calibur 2,3,4... Street Fighter Anniversary Collection, Super Street Fighter IV, Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo HD Remix, Def Jam Vendetta and Def Jam: Fight for NY (VERY UNDERRATED).

I have to admit I never have played any of the Def Jam Vandetta games. Is the fighter grappling heavy or are the fights more conventional?

Get the Def Jam: Fight for NY game... It is mixture of grappling, attacks, wrestling, weapon attacks and environment attacks. There are lot of different type of fighters in submission, wrestling, kickboxing, martial arts and street fighting and they do multiple styles. You don't have to be a hip hop fan to enjoy this great game. Good storyline as well. This game is better than the Def Jam:Icon game and is highly rated (9.0 with user score on here). Check out the reviews and trailer.

Gotta admit, I like the UFC series. I train in martial arts, and it was nice to see a game with an element of realism enter the mix.

That being said, my favortie fighting games are Eternal Champions, Street Fighter II Turbo, and MKIII.

Toshinden is alright, nothing special , but its decent. but if youre looking for a good 3D fighting game on the PS1, I would go for Dead Or Alive, Tekken 3 and Tobal 2 are also good. whatever you do , avoid Tekken 1, I could rip into the game ,but as far as Im concerned, its not a good game.

Thanks, I will def look into it. I am sure I can pick up Def Jam: Fight for NY at a pretty cheap price. If its a good mixture, and not solely focused on grappling, I think I will enjoy it. I have always watned to give that series a try, I was just afriad it would play like the THQ SMackdown v.s. Raw games. WHile those games are fun, you really only need to have one of them since the experience is the same from year to year.

I have a backlog of games at the moment though, so I won't likely get a chance for a weeks. At the moment I have Blaz Blue and MvC3 I want to put some more time into before I move on.

I also haveFightersMegamix and Fighting Vipers for the Saturn I just bought last month that I want to play through. I also have Prototype for the PS3 I have yet to play.

The one nice thing about having a gaming backlog is I am always behind on new releases, so by the time I pick them up they are much cheaper or very easy to find at a rental store.

I wasn't a huge an of battle area toshinden, but I think mainly because I felt it was a virtual fighter knock off. Everything it was trying to do, the virtual fighter series did better. Keep in mind its only my opinion, I am sure there are gamers out there that prefer that game over virtual fighter

Virtua Fighter and Toshinden are so far apart its silly to even compare them thats like comparing Soul Calibur and Dead Or Alive , completly different type of fighitng game. if anything I would have compared Toshinden to Soul Blade on the PS1. if anything , I would say Tekken was a VF rip off, just one that did very well.

You are likely right, I actually haven't played Toshinden in years, and I played it so little I can't remember it clearly. Maybe I felt that way because I had gotten into virtual fighter at that time, and since I felt it was superior to toshinden, I labeled toshinden as a rip off with weapons and moved on. My only experience with Toshinden was a rental as well.

If I remember correctly, when your health got low, you could pull of a desperation attack. And It seemed like these attacks were very tough to defend and the computer usually got me these. I never was a fan of that in the game

Toshinden borrowed the 3D part from Virtua Fighter, but the addition of weapons changed the game mechanics a bit, enough for it to be different. I think at the time far more comparisons were made between Tekken and VF if anything I think what got alot of people interested in Toshinden was really just the graphics, it indeed looked very good, though not long after, Virtua Fighter 2 was released on the Saturn and looked considerably better. Toshinden was also released on the Saturn , but frankly, its not the version I would recommend , and Last Bronx on the Saturn , another weapons based fighter, is a much better game.

It was def the saturn verison of Toshinden I had played. I had just gotten Virtua Fighter 2 for the saturn at that time. Agreed Virtua Fighter 2 for the saturn was much better and that why toshinden only got a quick rental.

I never played Tekken, most of my tekken gaming experience is from tekken 4 and tekken 6. I def prefered Virtua Fighter 4 evolution over tekken 4, I also like Virtua Fighter 5 over Tekken 6. Mainly, I just think both of those virtua fighter games require much more skill and strategy. Tekken just came off as a button masher, where learning combos and special moves didn't seem much more effective than button mashing. Maybe if I spent more time developing my Tekken 6 skills, I might like it more.
