Yeah I'm going back a ways, but I recently started playing ffxii again and it reinforced my opinion that this is the best in the series. The reason I think it stands out is all the extra stuff that can be done. This game really gets good if you take the time to fight the harder marks all the way up to Yiazmat and also do some rare monster hunting. This is the first ff I ever played so that might be why I enjoy it so much, but I have beaten vii, x, and xiii now and I still think 12 is the best one. Does anyone else think this game deserves more credit? p.s. Is ix worth playing?

I played from 7 all the way to 10. Great games,7&10 we're the best but 8&9 we're also very good. After that its not ff anymore. So you say xii is good? Convince me because the series lost me on the ps3. There where times that i counted the days for a new ff and totally lost myself in it...is xii that kind a game?

The license board was objectively terrible.

It was the first Final Fantasy game I ever played so maybe I'm a bit biased but yeah, I loved it too. I thought the characters were fantastic, especially Balthier - I used to have him as my avatar on another board. His dialogue was really mature. I liked Vaan and Penelo a whole lot too with their little romance thing going on. And of course Fran was quite...something :)

The battle system was superb IMO. Loved the license board, I felt like I was learning the system for about 80 of the 100 hours I spent playing it. And the graphics in that game were pretty fantastic for somethign on the PS2.

I've really been meaning to play through that game again, maybe this winter.

This is definitely a game you can get lost in. At least for me it was. The world is huge and the graphics are some of the best the ps2 ever had, there is a ton of extra stuff such as hidden bosses and areas and a ton of rare monsters that can be really tricky to find. The battle system is what really attracted me to the game. Going away from the timed system and actually being able to initiate the battles was a major plus for me. I sometimes felt like fighting was a chore in previous games and that went away for me in this one. You are able to control your whole party and can still be in total control of what is going on, there is a gambit system that can automate the fighting in a way but there is no one saying it has to be used. Plus as the game gets harder using gambits doesn't work that well and you really have to know what you are doing. I'd say this game is worth a try if you enjoyed 7 and 10. And as for the series losing you with the ps3 version I agree, xiii was horrible in my opinion and was extremely automated. I mean you can only control one of your party members while the other two just do their own thing. Worst ff I have played.

That's it exactly nothing more really needs to be said. If it was turn based and exactly like all the others it would have been much better received.

That's the problem when a series become too popular they can't move too far in any direction that would betray the fans expectations of what it should be. So developers usually wont stray too far from an established formula. That's exactly what Square did for a long time until people started to complain that the turn based combat and other aspects of the series was becoming formulaic and stale so they had no choice but to try and evolve the series. I thought FFXII was brilliant and one of the best in the series it's a shame that not everyone was able to see it.

I agree. XII is not only one of the best final fantasies but also one of the best JRPGs ever.

XII had a lot of content and exploration. Hunts and getting ultimate weapons were challenging and fun

I found the game enjoyable. Not the best FF game or RPG, but the best FF game since 9.

Final Fantasy XII was absolutely my favorite Final Fantasy adventure. I don't think I have ever had more fun playing another video game. Ohhh there are games that come close but when I look back at all of my gaming experiences, FF12 takes the cake! I'll be honest, it wasn't until my 3rd playthrough that I really got into the game. During my first two playthroughs I was ignorant of the incredible hunts and rare monsters. I also didn't understand the license board well enough to be an effective player. I believe this is why FF12 has such a bad rep. It takes quite a bit of research and a lot of dedication to get the full experience of FF12. However, Once you reach the point where you truly understand the game, possibilities are seemingly endless. Some people dislike the battle system compared to 7 or 10 but I feel like it was perfect. When happening upon an enemy, there was no delay or switching scenes like in 7 and 10, but it didn't matter. Once you were in the battle, it had a very similar feeling to 7 with or without Gambits. Yes, the game would pause while in the battle menu, but once I got quick enough at choosing my attacks it was a magically flowing system. The game was so large that if the battle system would have been just like 7 or 10, the game would have taken way too long to beat. Another problem people have with the game is the License Board. I wasn't a big fan of it at first, but once I figured it out, I wouldn't have wanted it any other way. It allowed maximum optimization of characters and quick character advancement if used correctly. Without the guidebook or an image of what each license contains, it can be quite frustrating I'll admit. My favorite part about the game was the Wyrms, especially Hell Wyrm and Yiazmat. Insanely long, intense battles that I will never forget.

it's my favorite of the single player FF's. there were no more disjointed transitions between explorations and battle; everything happened on the same screen. the weather system, rare monsters, creatures that would decide on their own to fight each other, and some imaginative environmental designs also gave the world a lot of life.

I enjoyed the battle system, the world, and even the leveling system (though it could have used some improvement). It was a fun game to play, nailing the right feel of a singleplayer MMO. But I have less than fond memories of the game because I didn't like a lot of the characters and the story was horribad Final Fantasy Tactics level of politicky psychobabble.

The story is alright.

The problem is I do not like the combat system. It is just like most WRPGs combat which to say it is horrible. While most WRPGs have other things to do other than combat, FFXIIs game play was all about combat.

I never played it because the main character looked flamboyantly gay.

But, I disagree. Lost Odyssey is the best FF game:)

It's not only my favorite Final Fantasy, but my favorite game of the PS2. I have somewhere around 200 hours on it across 4 playthroughs. I recognize its not a perfect creation and it definitely doesn't feel like Final Fantasy in any real sense but that's fine with me. I loved the political nature of the plot, though I wish Basch and Vaan could have swapped as main characters. The settings were fantastic, seamless world, enjoyed the combat, enjoyed the license system and the gambit system. Yes, it had the potential to be ruined even worse than FF8 but I always found it fun and challenging in boss fights to turn off all gambits, set battle system to active and battle speed to the fastest setting. The game had a ton of stuff to do, which when growing up, was the biggest deal to me as I would only get 3-4 games a year so I had to make them last.

Was hoping FFXII would come alongside FFX in that nice little HD collection Square announced last year but it doesn't seem like either at this point is happening.

I really liked FFXII. I played it over the Summer and thought it was a really great game. However, towards the end of the game you are so powerful that the game kind of plays itself. People who says FFXIII plays itself have never played FFXII. Once you set up the right gambits you can just sit back and watch the battle take place. The character development had a weird pacing too for some characters (Balthier, Fran, and Basch had the best backstory and development. The others not so much.), but that's all I can really complain about the game. I loved the atmosphere it had.

im glad theres a lot of ppl that enjoyed ff12 as much as i did. i was thinking that ff12 would definately be the best choice for an hd remake for psn. that game in hd would be amazing, its already got like the best graphics that ps2 has to offer.man ff12 was vast, i got lost for hours in that game literally.

i think it wouldve been perfect if it had a lot of cutscenes like ff10. allows for more character development cuz the journey was a really epic huge journey. but gameplay wise it was my favourite rpg.

the battle system was great, i really hoped they wouldve expanded on ff12's battle system when they were doing ff13 but they went backwards. ff12 was so fresh and a step in the right direction in many ways.
