Since the SNES is my favorite system ever, I obviously have to go with that.  It simply had better 3rd Party support and therefore more quality titles to set it above the GC.

The Gamecube had a lot of fantastic titles to boot though, like Resident Evil 4, Mario Kart Double Dash, 2 Metroid Primes, F-Zero GX, Mario Sunshine, Tales of Symphonia, Rogue Squadron 2/3, Super Smash Brothers Melee, Super Monkey Ball 2, Soul Calibur 2, 2 Star Fox games, and the Mega Man Collections.

I agree with this. The gamecube being a fantastic nintendo console with many great exclusives and first party games just wasn't enough to beat the third party support hthe snes had back in the day. More developers chose the snes as their platform, which is why i think the snes wins.

Don't favor a platform. Favor the developers. The snes just had more developers, that is a fact. I'd say the snes gets a score of 90/100 while the gamecube gets a score of 80/100. But thats just my opinion....

Adding to my Mario Kart post

In MK64 DK Jungle there's a ramp boost which lands you facing at a 45 degree angle to the road, if you hit left at the top of the ramp it lands you further down the track and at an angle which allows you to turn and keep going without needing to brake (pushing too far left puts you in the water) this little trick can often get you up a place.

In DD DK Mountain the ramp boost completely locks your controls, this section is just a little bit of flash, after you've seen it multiple times it even becomes a tedious element of the track you have to wait through every lap.

Banshee's Boardwalk & Toad's Turnpike both require waay more skill than any track in the entirety of Double Dash, Toad's Turnpike on Mirror is nasty and will crush people who aren't seasoned players whilst the pro's will weave in and out of the oncoming traffic.

----------------------------------------

On topic though, Super Mario Kart also has shortcuts which require pre-planning (the feather item).

Domino_slayer

I found that double dash takes much longer/ more skill to beat than kart 64. Don't get me wrong kart 64 is my favorite kart so far, but Kart 64 was rather easy against ai that could come in first one race and then 8th or 7th the next race. They fixed that in double dash where the ai that gets in first will continue to be near the top throughout the entire cup.

So was it really dumbed down? or did they make it more of a challenge while taking out cool secrets. Idk I dont think one is particularly better than the other but it is a fact that DD had more content and more play time than 64.

By the way gamespot gives kart 64 a 6 or something when it was the second highest selling n64 game above golden eye. that seems a bit fvcked to me.

Yeah, I like the philosophy of supporting games and developers, not systems.

I'd also rate the SNES and GC even higher than that, SNES a 95 and GC 85-90.  I feel like the GC is definitely underappreciated as it has some of my favorite games of all time.  I'd go as far to say that I liked the GC's 1st party exclusives as much as those of the SNES, it's just that the SNES had more 3rd parties to support it that makes the difference.

yeah the GC is definately underappreciated for me it would go GC>any other system that gen.

It had the first party titles that had no equal on other systems.

For that gen:  1st party?  Yeah I'd agree with you, it definitely had the best games.  3rd Party?  PS2 hands down, it got way more support than the GC.  I haven't played as many PS2 games than GC games and never played any Xbox games so I'd naturally go with the GC.

I had no trouble beating either.

Single player Mario Kart is redundant, if it wasn't for the multiplayer both games would be 5/10-6/10, the singleplayer is as lazy and barebones as it can be, and the computer AI is abysmal in both games. I actually can't stand to play single player in either game anymore, they're just so boring, Diddy Kong Racing is 10X the single player experience that MK64 and DD are.

So was it really dumbed down?luckykoopsie

Yes, and the only reasons DD would be harder than MK64 (if it is, I mean both games barely registered in difficulty to me) is that-

1. DD has such simplified gameplay mechanics and overdone handicapping that the pathetic computer AI keeps up a lot better, whilst in MK64 the AI gets completely obliterated by using advanced tactics that it can't understand or combat, and shortcuts it can't manage to take. In MK64 a smart human will get into first and then concentrate on defense by holding shells, banana's, blocks behind them, on DD you'll get into first and then get shot with red shells repeatedly, back and forth between the top 3 positions, you have to learn to fire the shells back at the right time to defend, and even when you've mastered that you'll still get shot with red shells fairly regularly.

2. A lot of the Karts control poorly in DD, the correct combinations have to be found.

Idk I dont think one is particularly better than the other but it is a fact that DD had more content and more play time than 64.luckykoopsie

I stopped playing DD after about a year and a half, I still play MK64 with my friends now, 15 years after I bought it.

We all got carried away by the DD graphics initially, but eventually we came to realise that no matter how pretty they were, the courses were generally poorly designed, and the game had virtually no room for depth, or flair, or any kind of tactics.

The best trick we got out of DD was learning to swap drivers at the right time to pick up double power-ups in quick succession, that was it.

Double Dash is all flash and no substance.

Also the battle courses in Double Dash sucked

By the way gamespot gives kart 64 a 6 or something when it was the second highest selling n64 game above golden eye. that seems a bit off to me.luckykoopsie

Never read GameSpot reviews, GameSpot have consistently the worst reviews of any online gaming site I've come across.

Also I miss being able to use a lightning bolt and then running over 1st place on the finish line so that they end up coming last.

Also Double Dash doesn't have the same feeling of speed either, compare Bowser's Castle on the two.

[QUOTE="GreySeal9"]

[QUOTE="Stefan9x"]Uhm walls of text...

Sorry, but you are absolutely wrong. The SNES has by far the lowest quality games out of any Nintendo console avaible. The only games worth playing are Act Raiser, Street Fighter 2, Killer Instinct, Secret of Mana, Secret of Mana 2, Sim City, Contra Alien Wars, Super Mario World, Super Mario World 2, Super Mario Allstars, DK Country Trilogy, Super Mario Kart, Super Metroid. And some of these games aren't nearly as good than the best ones on N64 and NGC.

ImJESUS-PROam

First of all, you're not really any kind of authority on what was worth playing.

Secondly, you forgot Final Fantasy VI and Chrono Trigger, which are widely regarded as being among the best JRPGs of all time.

Thirdly, you probably shouldn't complain about walls of text and then go on to write a rather long post. That's called being a hyprorite.

To be fair, those Rpgs didn't sell that well during their actual time.

Yeah they did. And they got hyped to no end in gaming magazines back then.

SNES, the Gamecube was solid but SNES was the full package, had the first and third party going for it which lead to a limitless amount of quality games. The Gamecube pretty much got the short end of stick through it's entire life cycle which is sad because I thought it was a great system. With that said, I'm looking to buy another Gamecube though, the video store in my area is having a sale for used ones going around $20. Haven't had one in my possession since 2006 :)

You don't seriously think that I named every great games on the SNES, do you? I could also give you just as long of a list of great games. I was just pointing out the cream of the crop on SNES.

BTW, not a single game on that list tops the likes of Super Metroid, LoZ: Link to the Past, Super Mario World, or Chrono Trigger, anyways.

Emerald_Warrior

I contend that Metroid Prime and Resident Evil 4 do.

But overall SNES is better due to the sheer number of great games.

Fantastic games. I liked the Resident Evil Remake even better than RE4. I never said the Gamecube was bad. I love my Gamecube. But the SNES is still leagues better than the Gamecube, IMO.
