Personally i go for story
Having a clutch battle in EVE is always gonna stick with you more than some wack story written for 14 year olds
Good Gameplay is better than a good histoty but i can like games with bad gameplay and good history the first time that i play. The games with good gameplay and bad story can be played again.
@Lulu_Lulu: think whatever you want. You're just a sad person behind a keyboard with no accountability
I have never met a keyboard with accountability
For me it's easy to enjoy a game where there's a clear lack of either one of them (I like TWD Telltale games just like I like Mario 3D world). Obviously games where both work well are the best for me... The problem is when one of them is present but doesn't work, then I start to get annoyed.
I'd say both, but neither is more important than the other, nor do both have to be present, so long as there's a big supply of each.
@Gamerno6666: I dunno... I love games with great gameplay, but what about those games that, when finished, make you wish you could keep playing, and they lull you into a sort of depression because they're over, like an amazing book? I don't know which I prefer tbh
Both are important qualities to have. You can make a successful game with a light amount of gameplay if the game possesses other qualities, we're entertained by movies aren't we? Entertainment is entertainment. You can't succeed on looks alone, and I strongly think gameplay trumps all. I love The Walking Dead and Amnesia, but I love Deus Ex, STALKER, Half Life, DSII and C&C more, as there's more engagement and immersion.
Well, one will love to play games if both are good, means where the story and game play both goes hand in hand, because the heart of the game is their graphics, story, sound as well as it's characters, if any of them is not good then the folks will just use to simply play it for passing their time but the combination of all will make the folks interactive with the games as well as take them towards the world of their game.
I think it's best to have both good story and gameplay, but some games can get by without a good story. No game can be really good without good gameplay though. Some genres/games need to have a good story, like JRPGs.
Gameplay VS Story? First and foremost I should say that there are loooots of great games with no story at all. On the contrary, a game with a lot of story and no gameplay is just a movie.
Said so, I usually prefer story driven games even if they have poor gameplay (see Asura's Wrath or NIER). I cannot stand a game that has no narrative goals, they just bore me to death. Even in an old school shoot 'em up (Sine Mora or Ikaruga) I require some sort of story to keep focused on the game.
