The Rock Band series comes to mind, the series has received numerous 9/10 scores and GOTY nominations, may people refer to the Saints Row series as a derivative GTA clone, so how come is Rock Band is not a derivative Guitar Hero clone?
oh great another overrated thread with a different name, if its famous its because a lot of people like it, oyur opinion alone doesn't matter move on.

Rock Band innovated in 2007 with the concept with playing as a band whereas Guitar Hero you only play the guitar. The Rock Band series comes to mind, the series has received numerous 9/10 scores and GOTY nominations, may people refer to the Saints Row series as a derivative GTA clone, so how come is Rock Band is not a derivative Guitar Hero clone?

I wanna say Infamous and Killzone 2 hell throw Uncharted 1 and resistance on there as well. Sony fans are gonna hate me but those were all overrated imo.
Infamous 1 scored a 9.0 here for realz! that game was average at best. Very Boring repetitive gameplay, Bland story, Bland graphics, Generic world, bad characters, mediocre powers that made it feel like you were playing a TPS more than a superhero type game. I mean his powers actually felt like guns. There was the equivalent of a pistol, shotgun, machine gun, grenades and even rocket launcher in there. It just felt very boring for this type of game The list goes on and on but they gave it a 9.0 come on. Infamous scored 7.5 here and assuming the sequel is a better game( i haven't played it yet) Infamous 1 probably should have scored lower.
Killzone 2 scored a 9.0 get outta town! KZ2 was no better than the first which scored a 6.9 by the way. Very boring generic uninspired SP with bland characters and weapons. Sluggish controls and forced 6 axis BS. Awful story, i cant even remember 1% of it and it was not so long ago that i played it. The MP was pretty much average as well and often turned into huge Cluster f's most of the time. The best thing about the game was its graphics too bad the rest suked that and i guess you can say it works yay! give it a 9.0. Total proof that a game can score high off looks alone.
Uncharted scored an 8.0. I must say it was the least offending of the bunch but still overrated imo. The looks great graphically but had a by the books story and bland gameplay imo. It took a bunch of ideas from other games but half assed all of it. The game also assumes you have the IQ of an ant. The puzzles/ so called tricky parts are brain dead. The climbing / platforming is brain dead, the shooting is well brain dead. Like i mentioned it did none of these things well by the way especially the shooting which was just very bland and boring and overly cheap at higher difficulties. The amount of ammo you could carry was patheic when compared to the amount of bullets enemies could take. This game invented the term bullet sponge. Still a good game though i would have given it a 7.5. So yeah this ones not so bad and the sequels did get better on some fronts not all though.
Resistance was well just trash period. I have no idea why it was so popular well actually it was out there around the ps3's launch so i guess that's why but it just wasn't very good at all and the series would have never gain traction at all if it weren't a launch title.
whew! had to get that off my chest. Its just i always see these games so highly talked about and rated when they werent that good at all.
-I've never experienced a game more overrated than Uncharted 2. It has a 96 average yet does nothing better than most other games... It focuses too much on superficial cinematics, fun gameplay is often sacrificed to serve the bad plot (Tenzen ice cave), the platforming is pretty much on rails (they also prolong these pointless and tedious portions by having almost everything break under Nathan's weight), and the shoot outs are slow and repetitive due to lack of enemy/gun variety as well as the enemy's ability to absorb bullets. I also experienced 4 rather major glitches on my first play through of the game.
-Assassin's Creed II is the only Assassin's Creed I've played and it seems to embody all the problems people have with the first game. The worst part was that the controls were quite clunky and it was often that Ezio doesn't do what you want him to while traversing. It also felt extremely repetitive. It felt like there wasn't much variety... Then there's that absolutely terrible combat to boot. I see a lot of potential for this series it just needs to up its game considerably.

Amen brother you speak the truth.
Dark Souls and Demons Souls but, at the end of the day who cares what I think especially if you are the ones that enjoy these games. I would go as far as saying to keep making these games. Even though I don't like them it doesn't change the fact that there are many who do. :)

At least he made a thread. Better than nothing. The more threads, the more topics, the better. Somebodies gotta keep PGD alive.
Hit the nail on the head here. Not saying both are bad games because they appeal to somebody, but they just didn't appeal to me. And in spite of what others try to convey, i just don't see what the big deal of either games areCall Of Duty and Halo. I can never understand why it got the acclaim.
Also, Skyrim. A game that's too buggy, too glitched, and yet got GOTY awards. WTF...

This...particularly Call of Duty from Modern Warfare 2 on....and the Halo series in general.

I think we can do better than just creating an "Overrated" topic for the one-thousandth time.Halo changed the shooter genre and with Halo 2 they released a multiplayer masterpiece. Two weapon mechanic, Regeneration of health, matchmaking, dual wielding, etc all were element in the shooter genre that Halo introduced. If you don't see the influence that Halo has had on the genre, then you're a narrow minded idiot.

Yusuke420
I'm fairly sure Halo invented none of these things.
Edit - I see you said introduced into the shooter genre, so I think you might be right about the health regen there.
Anyway, I vote any sports games (primarily FIFA).
Postmortem123
This I guess. I can understand why people like sports games, but I don't understand why some people buy them every year.
Same with Call of Duty. Agian, I can see why some people might enjoy them, but why they buy a new one every year is beyond me.
But oh well, if they enjoy it, more power to them.

Agreed on Skyrim, the worst review that it got was a 7/10 from PlayStation magazine, even they mentioned the unplayable PS3 lag, I would think that would be enough to lower the score well below a 7.
Bulletstorm- an "M" rated game made for 12-year-olds who adore dick jokes.
Shadows of the Damned- an "M" rated game made for 12-year-olds who adore dick jokes.
so how come is Rock Band is not a derivative Guitar Hero clone?RageQuitter69
You do know Harmonix, the makers of Rock band also created Guitar Hero?
Also, Guitar Hero was not the first rhythm/music game involving a guitar.
I'd have to go with pretty much any entry in the Halo series. Also I have to toss in the first Gears Of War.
The reason I pick Halo is because the games design is beyond bland. Environment detail is severely lacking, the multiplayer maps are of the most basic, dead design I have seen since the PS1 and N64. The sound design is basically terrible by any standard. The characters lack depth, complexity, and even a sense of humour. Not to say it isn't fun, because they are. But the games do not deserve the unusual praise they seem to receive.
Now on to Gears Of War 1, this game had an incredible cover mechanic. Keep in mind it did not create the cover mechanic. The game had fantastic visuals at the time, and some neat gameplay. But the game had a lack of detail in the environments, lack of pacing, lack of story, the characters just grunted and yelled stuff all the time. Every other word was "AMBUSH". In every room, go into cover, pop out and shoot, move to next room, Marcus screams "AMBUSH" again, rinse and repeat over and over and over till the credits roll. Yet this won many GOTY awards. It only had about a 6-7 hour campaign and 2 multiplayer modes upon release.
If you can't understand, read some reviews.
-Unreal-
That's not a good answer. A review is all about personal opinion and the facts about a game, not why it received critical acclaim. And as far as I can tell, they don't explain that.
Call Of Duty, Halo, and I should also mention Grand Theft Auto, all of a sudden, became these huge franchises for no good reason other than "Oh my god, It's Halo, Call Of Duty, or Grand Theft Auto! YAY!!!!! *orgams*"
Don't kid yourself. These are some of the most overrated, overhyped series in gaming history.

I think we can do better than just creating an "Overrated" topic for the one-thousandth time. Its probably a good sign for the industry that the PGD in its modern form is lightly populated since many posters prefer to whine about games they hate rather than talk about games they enjoy.

Most of us could, yes. But the majority of the regulars here now can't.
For me it's Skyrim. It was aweful and still can't wrap my head around why everyone raves about it.Peanut04_basicIt's epic in scale, tons of quests to complete and they are consistantly fed to you with Skyrim dynamic quest system. The story is decent if uneventful and the guild quests are excellent (hail sithis!). Pretty good character progression system tops off the cake of a very good game. I can't wait until they introduce new content and I can take my character to 50 finally (I have done just about everything and have about 150 hours logged onto the game).
Yup.Also, Skyrim. A game that's too buggy, too glitched, and yet got GOTY awards. WTF...

I don't think it's a bad game at all, but if I were to score it I'd probably give it a 8 tops. But I can't for the life of me understand how it garnered so much acclaim either. It did everything so incredibly average.
