any games which are so difficult (on default normal) that the only sane way of beating them is to put it on easy difficulty ?

Ninja Gaiden, DMC 3, Demon's Souls, Dragon Age can be pretty challenging at times especially on the higher difficulties.

I thought that Uncharted : Drake's Forune was kind of a bear on Crushing difficulty. There were a few times that I considered quitting trying. I had played all the way through on easy, medium, and hard. Crushing requires a dead aim, a lot of patience, great weapon and movement strategy, very good melee skills, and a bit of luck.

Not counting the essentials like Demon's Souls and Ninja Gaiden; I would actually have to say Dead Space on the toughest difficulty. If and when you get surrounded by those ugly things, it takes chaotic patience and a little luck to get out alive. Devil May Cry 3 gets pretty tough! Left 4 Dead 2 on Expert realism mode in Hard Rain is only for those with endurance :)

Call of Duty: World at War on Veteran. Not because the enemy AI is difficult, but because the game decides to spawn grenades strapped to your chest.

I Wanna Be The Guy The Movie The Game.

The game gets all its entertainment value from being so absurdly hard as to be almost hilariously unplayable, and yet with enough tedious memorization, you can beat it, and feel really proud that the goal of your entire life for the past two days has been fulfilled.

I couldn't have said it better.

If the developers of Ninja Gaiden and Demon's Souls ever came together and created a game...well, the world isn't ready for pain of that level.

Not really on the topic, but I despise games that lets you change difficulty after you have started the game. What is that all about?

Prinny: Can I Really Be the Hero? is really, really hard on normal difficulty. To make it more hardcore than it already is, there's only two difficulties: Normal, and Hell's Finest (where one hit takes a life).

Really? I just finished it on hard and thought it was relatively easy. That was my first play-through, too.

Castlevania III frusterated me so much. I was glad when I FINALLY managed to finish it...

And yeah, many NES games were absurdly hard. Many times with NES games it felt like BS more than difficulty (though that's what I say everytime I get mad at a game, so...:P)

F-Zero GX? Depends on what you consider beaten. I've beaten all the cups on Master mode, and the story mode on normal (I beat about half of the chapters on hard, and two on very hard). I'd agree that beating the game on Very Hard would be nearly impossible.

As for hard games: basically every NES game ever. They are so unforgiving it's not even funny. Metroid Prime 2: Echoes was pretty tough as well.

They weren't all that hard, they just required more dexterity and better timing than games of today. I'm going to assume that you are probably in the mid to high teens, or very early 20s crowd. Games have gotten progressively easier since the Saturn/PS1/N64 era.

I've beaten Captain Skyhawk and Ninja Gaiden(among others) without dying, and I was under 10 years old. I would say the hardest nes games that I can remember were the mega man ones. They weren't unbeateable, but were the kind of games you'd pause and take a break, go play tag with your friends outside, and then come back to.

Just look at the stuff The Angry Video Game Nerd plays through.

I can say that World of Warcraft used to be a hard game, because having to order and organise 39 other players and hopeing everyone does their job right was hard work. You spend more time learning a new boss in WoW then you did beating a boss in any ninja game.

I don't know what it's like these days however, I stopped playing it many years ago, before Wrath of the Litch King was even heard of.

21. I've actually grown up with a NES, but seeing as I had a Game Genie I didn't test my actual skills very often... The problem with most NES games isn't necessarily the difficulty, but the fact that they often rely on having to attempt certain things 50 times, because there was too limited space to create epic adventures. I've started SMB3 on the Virtual Console, and got to the end of world 7 before I grew bored with being stuck in the second castle. Another example is LoZ, which is so tedious I just don't get any enjoyment from playing.

So I guess back then, it was mostly the absence of other types of games that made them beatable.

Trauma Center series, still can't beat all of the X-whatever missions in Under the Knife 2 (the second DS one). If I were a real doctor in that situation I'd give the patient some Vicoden and tell them to f*** off.

Yes, particularly Emperor Ing who I've still not beaten.

On a funny (or sad) note, it took me over 10 times to beat Boost Guardian, and then I watched my 8-year old nephew beat Boost Guardian on his very first try without my help (or uh maybe hindrance), I was awed! I told him that was easily the most impressive gaming moment I have ever seen. He had never seen me battle Boost Guardian prior to that! I gave him $5 for that accomplishment.

Haha maybe the pupil has become the master.

Beatmania IIDX. "Normal" difficulty at some points is harder than any hardest mode in any Western music game.

F-Zero GX is ridiculously hard, as most of the challenges require you to pull a perfect run to pass them (let alone do better). Ikaruga is also hard, but I wouldn't call it insanely difficult until the third or fourth level.
